Toxic leaders who have political connection are the worst especially when they use that power to go backwards and not forward
And Incompetent!
-
Maybe guys should stop offering to play in each others sandbox and we can put an end to this bullshit! M/A was to cover empty Stations in a neighboring Community not to supplement an adjacent Town FD for a Bread and Butter Fire! Then again if an FD's Membership doesn't come back to backfill Spare Apparatus to release M/A Depts. covering their Stations you have an whole new ball of wax! Now what do you do?
-
Next applicants will want rides and wake up calls for the test like FDNY is doing! Oh wait CT Depts. don't lower the Bar for applicants. Good for them!

For example, corrupt Mayors dictating to FD who they should hire, court systems dictating who should get promoted, Chiefs promoting their "in crowd" or to fit their agenga, etc etc. While those who are truly deserving try and try again yet attempts are futile due to the same toxic leadership who know they can get away with it. As opposed to leaders who stand up for a fair hiring practice and make it clearly know and transparent to their subordinates...
Misread your post Seth sorry. I thought it said those practices cant originate from toxic leadership. My bad!

But those practices can originate from toxic leadership.....
And why is that?

I found this article to be quite applicable to the fire service as well, and a insightful read.
Here's a quote:

And let's not forget "Toxic" Hiring/ Promoting Practices within some Fire Departments! They both are a recipe for Disaster within the Fire Service as well as any Profession!

AGREED.
It must be nice to have a control man. Sure beats stretching the line, then running back to open the valve, then running to open the nozzle and flushing it, then hoping the pressure is correct, because you can't really adjust it. Or hoping the next due engine can get it for you.
This is how most depts. are forced to operate
And then praying the MPO hooks up to the red siamese and not the green one! LOL!

Does FDNY always use 2 1/2"" for all Standpipe Jobs weather Commercial or Residential?
-
Believe I saw somewhere Spring Valley only had roughly 6 decent Jobs all together.
-
And this in a nut shell is all too common unfortunately!

No different then Greenville/Fairview/White Plains going to MT.Vernon on m/a when Yonkers and New Rochelle are right next door. Yes, personalities do come into play and whose family member or friends are working that tour. Call the closest and not the furthest. No rational in the other way of thinking. Let's put the safety of our Brother FFs and the Civilians first and not one's ego/feelings. Time to stop wanting to play in each others sandbox! Want to work in a busy Dept. then transfer for Christ sake! M/A should also be at the hosting Dept's IC request, and not at 60 Control's discretion. Who the hell are they anyway to determine who goes, you just send us who we request if it's possible.

In some Municipalities all you need is a pulse!

Because the Federal courts said so
Figures as much!

Nice to see some Municipalities still hold the Bar high for hiring and won't hire pos! I still say Departments should require a candidate to know how to swim especially New Ro! Never understood why they got rid if that part of the Agility?

My department built a brand new fitness room, with a complete set of top of the line equipment. It is probably the least used room and equipment in the firehouse. It's a good question. How do you get guys motivated and how do you tell them they are out of shape when that becomes an issue?
Put a Bar in there and it'll be standing room only! LOL

What I never understood though is why do individuals who perform the Job of a FF have to be begged, persuaded, encouraged, etc.etc. to stay in some kind of good shape. We all know how important it is and how physically challenging it is so can we please just show a little initiative and start our own work out regiment on our off time. After all we as PFF have a pretty good work schedule and there should be no excuse for members not to work out on their own. Let's stop blaming Management for guys being out of shape and not providing a "Workout Program" and take some personal responsibility. I see plenty of Gyms in Stations with only a handful of guys utilizing them. It's like trying to persuade guys to learn their Job and become proficient at it when they have absolutely no interest at all. Here's a novice idea, put down your ipad and iphone, get up off the couch or push yourself away from the bowl of ice cream on the kitchen table and do some cardiovascular. Don't wait for the Powers to Be to tell you to do it! Many of us all have families at home we should be concerned about! JMO.

More importantly how many Depts will cover a guy if they get injured during a fitness program within or outside the Station, while they're on duty?

Uh guys, it was a Garage and detached at that, not a PD or OMD, relax!

Don't give them a dime!!! I wouldn't even entertain it!

Isn't it a shame people just can't go to work and have to abuse the s*** out of the System! Sick leave is there to be used not abused! Unbelievable!

Still don't understand how a City like Yonkers with many bodies of water around don't have a Dive Team. Mind boggling!

People have also been killed in so called interior fire stairwells. Like Snotty said what happens when occupants open their apt. door and the stairwell is 25 ft away in lights out conditions and heavy heat?
