But it does not go out the window when you pull up and your told everyone's out.  Being told everyone is out does not mean a primary search is not needed and without more staff your options for an interior attack is delayed, allowing the fire to grow and making it more hazardous when the rest of the troops arrive

I do not know GFD's details, but your assumption of 24 on duty (based on 96 assigned to suppression) is not likely unless they are backfilling about 20% of the time with ot. This is needed to cover contractual time off (vacation, personal days, sick etc.) it often does not cover long term service connected injury or sick leave. If they are not covering it, that would leave them closer to 19 per shift or 4 staffed rigs plus command with an aide.

How many engines do you think they need?

Greenwich is 67 sq miles. If properly located an engine company (based on ISO & NFPA standards) can cover 1.5 road miles in any direction, that's approximately 5 square miles. When a station is located along a distric (or in this case a state line) the area for that company is cut in half. Even at the maximum road distance of 5 miles, that's about 15 square miles, but your rating will be very poor.

now add truck companies, a rescue and tankers.......

I agree with your point but the scenario you've presented is vastly different then the scenario I answered.

In this case the First Selectman and Fire Chief have informed the citizens of what low staffing could mean for them for a few years now.  The Firefighters are asking for the citizens to let the BET know where they stand.

All this command training is great, but until we establish a legitimate minimum standard for training for firefighters, company officers and command officers we are spinning our wheels.

just this week one Westchester FD past its new minimum standards for becoming chief:
    Firefighter 1
    iCS
and must live in the district.

thats all to be chief of department.

and you want advanced command training? Probationary career firefighters have more training in the first 3 weeks of the 17 week academy than this department requires the chief.

The first step is admitting one has a problem, and since agencies can't or won't do that even after the 3rd or 4th tone out.

Sounds like they were well staffed, but just because they had rigs "in-service" what was the staffing per rig? I'm sure the foam unit was not staffed. And I remember going on EMS calls where the 1st due engine had only 1 or 2 and the rescue was the manpower for every rig.

I was one of the guys that thought you could judge a guy by the way his helmet looked. Up until only the last couple of years, I would laugh at somebody for washing their gear. I laughed when I saw guys fighting a car fire wearing their air packs. Then one day I saw this video put out by the Boston Fire Department. A very busy department that caught a lot of work back in "The Day". The kind of place where as a buff (up there called a spark) I saw a lot of fires and the guys on the job saw a lot of fires too.

At the time, being a firefighter in a much smaller city, I was kind of envious of the way "their" helmets looked. Then I saw this video and I started to think a little bit different. I also saw some articles written that said fighting fires today is a little bit different than it was 30-40 years ago. A lot of wooden furniture had been replaced with plastic furniture. I knew that was correct by some of the things in my own house.

What happen to these Boston firefighters of my generation could probably happen a lot easier today. If one article said I should wash my gear and one didn't, I think today I would go with the "washing it". I don't think I would want to go through what these guys or their families went through.

Maybe some of you have already seen this. But it is probably worth repeating. Knowing what I know now, I would rather NOT take the chance. Who cares if I look like the new Probie on the rig.

Your reputation is what is salty  not your gear.  that being said,  ( I know ur lid is ur badge of honor) how many guys wash their earflaps? IF they are down during a job,  they will get dirty agree?  How do you wear your flaps most of the time,  tucked up inside your lid.  So now that dirt is directly transferred to your head.   Wash your earflaps !!!

The only ones who thought that were the ones with blinders on. We were very aware of what Lynn Tilton was up to. And we knew it was coming.

My Monday morning QB instinct says I'd do it but prefer the truck back in, in case it got stuck you could use the aerial without going over the cab. Pretty common to see pics from PG county with truck off the pavement, not seen any that had poor results? It's always tough to argue against a positive outcome, easier to cast stones when it's a negative.

Funny how everyone thinks it's a fire department decision. It's up to the politicians to determine if they want the FD to do it. And currently under NY States tax cap if it costs more, it means something else must get cut. Even if it were to be a better service, it's all about $$$$
