Part of this is true, the candidate gets a second try a couple of weeks later. This new standard is for both career and volunteer ff's. What was explained to the chiefs was "this is not to get rid of potential firefighters, it is to have them in-house trained to expect this when they get to class. We (the fire service) do a disservice to volunteer recruits when we hand them all their gear and tell them to show at class night one, and they haven't even worn it yet. Several depts. in Westchester are way ahead of the curve by doing months of in-house training before sending anyone to class. AND IT SHOWS.
I read one comment that stated each dept should be responsible for their own training. I agree. Who gets to over see this? With this new OFPC standard the instructor who trained the recruits is not the same evaluator for final skills.

You wear the pack on your back but if you're on air for this again you're a yard breather and are less of a ff then the exterior driver who has got tools out ready and ladders thrown to windows. But I forget there's no such thing as a need for support personnel everyone should be able to go interior so when guys get injured or they can't go interior they should be thrown out with the rest of the rejected that cannot be interior. Even though when properly cleared many of these categories can play a vital role in the outcome of a fire. We don't need anyone who can't be interior so we'll also have to start limiting age due to the number of 40 plus year old interior guy's dying from heart attacks. So with the age cut off those guy's on the job well oh well you can't be a driver because you don't belong interior so thanks for being here 20yrs have a nice day don't have to go home but can't stay here.
Yes the requirements for some one becoming and staying interior needed updating. Just remember there are probably more exterior/support personnel are and were regular firefighters before they had to hang up there scba the way some make it sound they are not firefighters. It was added about hospitals you're right not everyone is called a Dr but they are all health care workers. Just like not everyone in the fire service is an interior or wildland or whatever but we are all firefighters! So get off you're high horse find real solutions for all of the fire service and the community's better requirements for every position in the fire service don't just write off the exterior like I said before a lot of them can't be interior anymore.

But I thought M/A was the answer? Especially when guys come back on OT of an undermanned and ill equipped Dept. to help their neighboring struggling "Brothers" out next door who have been fighting the same issue for yrs. That's all Ive ever heard from my fellow Union Brothers, "Hey we're there for you guys just give us a call." LMAO! The chickens are coming home to roost!!! Gotta love the "Union Solidarity!" It's all bullshit fellows!

you say the volunteers have been taken out of the response for a few years now what is there job then in eastchester fire dept they used to be one of the biggest volunteer organizations in lower westchester along with mt vernon which also eliminated volunteers back in the 80s i think. now look they cant afford to pay people to do the job or even fix thier stations so the politicains say , do the volunteers in eastchester even have any say what goes on i do believe that the people need to get to the district meetings and see what is being done with your tax money and why they donot have better protection and equipment.

Simple version:
Town Board creates a Fire Protection District and then contracts with some firefighting entity to provide the protection. Mt. Hope contracted with the Village and its FD and the residents of the Fire Protection District paid taxes to the Town (on a separate line in the tax bill) for the amount of the contract.
Now they want to create a Fire District, which is a municipality and will have power to tax. The former Otisville FFs have created a fire company and that company will still exist, but the Fire District will create a Fire Department and it will likely consist of all the people in the new Mt. Hope company. The District's Fire Department will be the operating entity - the Company will involve itself in related matters (including recommending a Chief to the District, which recommendation the District will accept or reject) and raise funds and do other stuff. The majority of the cost of firehouses, fire trucks, equipment and lots of other things will be borne by the District (and not the Town government) and they will be able to float bond issues to borrow money to pay for it all. The taxpayers will still be levied for the funds and it will still show up on the Town tax bill on a separate line. There are a number of actions the District takes that will require voter approval.
The District will be governed by Commissioners - usually five - who will probably first be appointed by the Town Board and then will stand for election within a year. The one with the most votes will serve 5 years; the one with the second highest vote will serve 4 years; and so on to the one who came in fifth, who will serve for one year. After that, one Commissioner will stand for election each year, so you can't throw them all out at once, except in that first election.
The Town Board will have no more say in the operations of the District or its department or its taxes.
It is possible that the District might be a Joint District between the Village and the Town, but that doesn't appear to be in the works as it appears in the Record.
This story reminds me of what I have been told about the formation of the Philipstown North Highlands Fire District, which covers an area that used to be covered by Cold Spring FD - though I think the problem was more with the Town Board than the Village Board - and the residents used the petition process instead of having the Town create it. (If anyone has better info on that old story, let me know.)
