  1. Does that mean the "Rescue Medics" will be continuing patient care onboard the Transcare rig on the way to Westchester Medical Center? The reason I thought the local EMS should be integrated into the drill would be to work out the transfer of care to the transporting medic.
  2. One would think they would want to integrate the local EMS agency in their drill.
  3. The issue is that no amount of signage is going to prevent a person with three time the legal limit of alcohol in their system from making a wrong turn. Maybe we need the "severe tire damage" strips like some malls have. It would also prevent people from backing up the ramps when they see the traffic stopped on the highway.
  4. Congrats Chris! Once the Alamo / Transcare merger is complete, I hope to work my way back onto Medic 2 and spend some quality time in the Valley.
  5. I seems to me the only concern I have on a scene is the safety of my crew and patient. If a blue light increases our safety, I'll glady pay the ticket.
  6. The closing hasn't taken place yet. The recent log jam in Albany is most likely the cause. No one doubts it's going to happen. The former Fishkill crews are turning out of the station on Middlebush now. Currently Medic 18 and Medic 21 are there. I haven't seen anyone in a Transcare uniform driving an Alamo rig yet.
  7. Two things make this worse than the usual flu: 1. It is spread human to human, unlike the bird flu. 2. The people that have died from it are young adults. It's not the actual flu that is killing them but the intense reaction of their immune systems. These are the attributes of the 1918 pandemic that killed 20 to 100 million people.
  8. The map of the state in the corner?
  9. The vast majority of patients in Yonkers are transported to Yonkers hospitals. This is because: 1. NYS protocol. 2. Most patients express a preference for one of the local hospitals. 3. Transporting to a local hospital allows a shorter turnaround time for the ambulance. 4. The more patients a service brings into a hospital, the more likely it will be called for the outgoing transfers. The patients that are transported to Jacoby or WMC need the specialty services that the local hospitals can't provide: Trauma, Burns, High risk pregnancy. The "cure" for trauma is surgery. For surgery to be effective, it should take place during the first "Golden Hour" after the injury. Despite what you see on "ER", surgery is not done in the Emergency Department. Trauma centers are prepared to fire up an operating room within minutes of a trauma patient arriving at the hospital. A local non trauma hospital might need hours to assemble an OR staff. They may not be able to do neurosurgery at all. Therefore, bringing a trauma patient to a non trauma hospital delays definitive care and leads to poorer outcomes.
  10. Isn't this also done to flush any rust / crud onto the ground rather than into the hose? NOTE: I'm not a FF. It just seems like common sense.
  11. Warren sold me my first EMS uniform in the early 90s. I've been back there several times since then and it has always been a pleasure. My condolences to Barry and his family.
  12. If you see a column of smoke, do you really need to ask for a better location?
  13. Pretty amazing that even before FFs were dressed for Lunar landings, they still managed to get the job done.
  14. I had hair like that once....Boy I miss those days!!
  15. I know they were mixing both GLS and ALS rigs for transports back then. GLS = Geriatric Livery Service j/k Joe!
  16. Ambassador Ambulance and Empire State Ambulance operated out of a garage on North Lawn St. in Elmsford around 1997. Empire State's rigs were white with blue and gold.
  17. Rest in peace Quigs. Our Thursday night meetings for the paperwork shuttle were a blast.
  18. With very few exceptions, having a scanner or other two way radio in your car is against the law. That being said, I have never heard of anyone being charged with this offense if they weren't doing something illegal or stupid at the time. Use common sense. Don't flaunt it in front of the police. Don't use what you hear for personal gain or to compromise someone's privacy. Don't buff calls that you have no business being at. I've had a scanner and a couple of portable radios in my personal vehicles for many years and no one has ever said a word to me about it.
  19. I'll reply to this when I get the english translation.
  20. What is the down side of keeping the low band dispatch frequency alive? I can't believe it is very expensive. Given the topography of the county, no matter how advanced the UHF system is, there will be dead spots. Why not have one more way to get the dispatches to the FFs and EMTs?
  21. Tires Fuel Intense Blaze By Martin F. Downs Valley News Staff Writer White River Junction -- An inferno fueled by thousands of combusting tires destroyed a historic building that contained businesses and a family's home. THE VALLEY NEWS
  22. How did an Alamo rig wind up in the impound yard? Even if it was wrecked, they would have dragged it back to the shop to be scavenged for usable parts.
  23. 28. History is my hobby.
  24. I think a BLS bus would have to make 4 or 5 transports a day to cover its operating cost. I don't think Garrison and Phillipstown average that many calls. Even if the volunteers couldn't cover any of the calls, the county would have to contribute to a BLS 1. Yes, the VACs are paying for daytime coverage. But they are also billing for the transports. If all the runs were turned over to BLS 1, they would lose that revenue.
