Sounds like to me that this incident was appropriately handle and no more criticism should be made.  This seems like a isolated incident that required a special resource and that was requested and responded and handle it as needed,  end of story.

Those with criticisms, if they are so involved and have such expect opinions and knowledge ought to think about joining their local fire department if they want to help out so much.

Don't criticize those who decide and make your lives safe everyday by these proper decisions, but embrace that they are doing a job and doing it correct.

Regardless of who, why or when this or isn't happening.

The law does not allow for a paid chief without that district going to New York State and getting state legislation passed allowing this to happen in a volunteer fire dept., unless there is already not an allowance for this in that department.

This has been squashed, US Rep. Patrick Maloney has been able to secure FEMA funding to keep the guys on the job.

Way of the future, lack of good candidates coming up through ranks, lack of long term members sticking around, people don't just give this worthwhile job a good shake, they all have the hand out but don't do to make better for the dept. Just appears to be the way of the volunteer services today lots of depts are in this shape, but most won't think forward like this one is.

It sad to say I see it in many, including my own, but the people in power afraid to do right thing and the young afraid to step up for the right reasons, they do it for wrong reasons.

This is not a issue in most cases, but as usual one bad apple could spoil the bunch. I think that in the case Santa riding on the fire truck is not the same as why the policies are in effect, they are there to warn against riding these outside positions while doing higher speeds to calls. Which one might ask, why we make a policy to prevent accidents with people riding outside positions instead of teaching how to drive safely instead.

The case with the Santa who almost had his taken off, they was stupidity on the part of the rider not watching or his spotter watching his travel path.

Leave this issue along, it is nothing to do with violations of fire department policies on riding to calls on the outside of the apparatus.

1842 hrs. - Pawling command reports working structure fire.

1844 hrs. - 2nd call for Pawling equipment

1846 hrs. - 2nd Alarm of fire dispatched for remaining Pawling equipment, Dover 36-13, Beekman 34-11 & 34-31 and Tanker each from Patterson (Putnam County) and Sherman Ct.

1849 hrs. - 3rd call for equipment to respond

1851 hrs. - Request from NYSP Car on scene for NYSEG to expedite to scene for wires down for serious safety issues.

All I can say is, watch for what anyone wishes or knows will be the best. The only thing that would be the best in Dutchess County is the Consolidation of ALL FIRE AND EMS into 1 (One) Countywide Fire & EMS Department...

To those who think they know so much about this specific report and it's findings, that are not even released or known by the department it involves yet, you know nothing about it and basically should

"KEEP YOUR BIG PIE HOLES SHUT", give the respect of waiting for the report and it's finding to come out at the March 22, 2012, 7pm press release being made at the Town of Poughkeepsie Town Hall on Overrocker Road.

Thanks for understanding this delicate situation, as it will not only affect the department involved, but it's neighbors and could and should very well lead to what I stated before "COUNTYWIDE FIRE & EMS", since every single department in the county could and would benefit from it then..

Description Of Incident: Roll Over Auto Accident with Entrapment and Car Fire

2130 hrs. - Update to Car 10, reports multiple calls reporting fire with entrapment

2130 hrs. - MLSS 290 responding

2130 hrs. - City Police on scene, reporting bystanders with extinguishers knocking down fire.

2131 hrs. - Police on scene requesting at least need for 4 Ambulances, Car 10 advises will advise of need, arriving on scene

2131 hrs. - City 911, dispatches second MLSS unit to sceen, MLSS 281 responding

2134 hrs. - Car 10 advises, at least 4 victims

2137 hrs. - MLSS 281 on scene

2146 hrs. - Car 10 requesting duration of time on scene, dispatch advises 19 minutes. Car 10 advises still extricating 1 and MLSS has other patients in care of their units.

2201 hrs. - MLSS 281 enroute to St. Francis Hospital with 2 patients BLS

2212 hrs. - Car 10 reports extrication complete and possible of 5 patients transported to hospital

2212 hrs. - MLSS 290 enroute to St. Francis with 1 patient ALS

2228 hrs. - Car 10 reports that Engine 3 is 10-8 returning, Engine 1 remaining on scene to assist with lighting for Police investigation.

There is a Dept in Northern Westchester that has given out over 50 portable radios so they can call on scene. Yes somebody is on scene. No they cannot do anything but call on scene. I do believe that this is slanting the RESPONSE TIMES.

Although I agree with this can be slanted response times and make it look like this dept. mentioned is on scene within X amount of time quickly, it doesn't mean a piece of apparatus with capabilities to do anything is there. On the other hand, what does allow is for a quicker request for additonal resources to be summoned quicker to compensate for lack of quicker apparatus times, this again slants the reality of prompt optimum care of fire attack.

What it also does is allows for the first "Yahoo" with a radio on scene to slow down the others incoming to prevent unneeded LODD and isn't that one of the "16 Firefighter Safety Initiatives" from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation" and our 1st and most important objective to keep this dying breed of firefighters alive?

So in closing, on one hand it saves firefighters lives, cause it prevents unecessary firefighter deaths and injury through quicker radio repoprts to slow down the "Screaming Blue Light" Parade heading to the call, but it doesn't get the important item there that will put the fire out, "A Fire Engine with a Qualified Crew"

0804 hrs. - Amenia 31-16 responding

0804 hrs. - Millerton 51-3 on scene reporting possible multiple brush piles on fire, out investigating. Code 1 equipment and no further dispatches at this time.

0806 hrs. - Millerton 51-3 reports confirming multiple brush piles on fire and within local open burning policies, terminate the alarm.

0807 hrs. - DC CC14 back in service.

0808 hrs. - Millerton 51-3 reports to DC911 that this will be an ongoing incident of burning possibly all day in case they recieve any further reports.

Yeah, maybe a stronger lobby to get no annual fee, but the lobby must not be that strong or they would have had a new design too.. Same old design for the volunteer firefighters...
