    joetnymedic,
The New Haven Police could arrest Osama bin Laden and the comments section in the Register would still be complaining and making him look out to be a victim. These people are nuts.

I am still reeling over the events that have unfolded over the last 24 hours here in Poughkeepsie. I cannot even begin to express my sympathy, and sorrow, for the families of the slain officer, both his blood, and professional families. You are all in my thoughts.
To all the brothers and sisters in the City, my sincerest condolences. I am 100% certain that anything you need, you just ask, and we all will do, at the drop of a hat.
While I cannot officially represent everyone, from myself, at the least, your neighbor over at County.
Officer Falcone, I salute you. The true content of your character shines through the tragic outcome. Rest In Peace, you served faithfully, and have been taken to a higher calling, and can now take your post.

    Try this:
Simply say, "Like a good neighbor, WCDES is there!" on 46.26. Poof, the units show up.

I came across this article recently written by a D/C in Canada. Although it is directed towards our neighbors to the North, I think it is just as applicable here.

Now I know this is a rather emotional topic for some but maybe we can keep any discussion that ensues civil, after all we are all in this together and sometimes discussions on this topic can lead to an understanding that will allow us all to better serve our communities.

Last night the owner officially apologized on behalf of his bar tenders and the manager who discussed the incident with one of the guys the next day. We were slated to go there and try and set a meeting up with him about this, but this thread made its way back to him before we had the opportunity, so he contacted us about it. Either way, the issue is resolved from a personal stand point.

Although this entire event is surely tragic, I feel that the most horrific aspect of this tragedy is that this "mental case" shot an innocent 9 year old girl to death in cold blood and the news focuses largely on the Congresswoman as the majority of the story. Not to say "any" life is more important than any other, it just shows how slanted the media can be with stories of tragedies like this. Just my .02cents.

We received a post- arrest the other night in the local ER. She (a dialysis pt who missed her rx due to the winter storm) called 911 saying she couldn't breathe and "was probably having a heart attack." 2 minutes later PD broke down her door and found her asystolic-- started CPR. 2 more minutes later ALS arrived and loaded a few rounds of Epi and Atropine into her. Got a pulse. Gave 1 more of Epi and 1 more of Atropine. Scrambled her to me in the local ER with a pulse of 40 (mostly ectopic, med-based beats). We immediatley began the hypothermia protocol (AKA Code Cool).
    Fast forward: 2 days.
She was warmed back up in our ICU from 93 degrees to 98 degrees and was extubated the day after. 2 days later she was extubated and asked ME, the one who received her and wrote her off as non-viable, ""What the Hell was I thinking bothering you people with my medical problems??? I'm so sorry I bothered you all!"
WE broke her ribs, tore her lip tubing her, and jammed lines and tubes all over the place in her tiny body, and she's apologizing to ME. This is why I do this. Beyond words. Seriously. There's so rarely a save post-arrest, and if the person survives, he/she rarely comes out of it as much more than a plant on a window sill. And she thanked ME.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, all. NEVER forget why you do what you do and NEVER assume your efforts are fruitless. This woman was proof to me to always the assume the outcome is going to be a GOOD ONE.

According to the court case of Tennessee v. Garner, the use of deadly force is justified when an officer has probable cause to believe that an otherwise unarmed suspect, through his escape or means of escape, poses a significant threat of death or serious physical injury to the officer or others. (The court case also states that the instrument used to dispense the deadly force is of no consequence.) The totality of the circumstances in this case, as viewed through Garner, renders the entire issue moot. Danroy Henry was drunk and used his vehicle in a manner similar to that of any other perp with a weapon, and quite frankly, he and his buddy got what they deserved.

I remember seeing this in a previous thread. The article mention at the time was about it being bought and the owners ideas for rebuilding it. It is nice to see the finished product. However no in my taste either. The pole is nice though. If only it were in the basement and with a lazy boy recliner near it... (No disrespect intended)

This requires a rather lengthy complicated answer, but I'll try to sum it up.
Sergeant: Just your traditional Sergeant as you know them commonly. Now the NYSP doesn't have "Patrol Sergeants" or "Desk Sergeants." They are really administrative positions only, and if you seem them in the field, it is most likely because they are responding to a large scale incident, or overseeing a detail. They do not patrol. Sergeants have permanent rank based on a competitive test.
Technical Sergeants: These are appointments to positions which require some unique skill or expertise. Technical Sergeants either have the permanent rank of Sergeant, or in many cases have the Permanent rank of Trooper. However, a Trooper who is appointed a Technical Sergeant receives all the benefits of a permanent rank of Sergeant.
Sergeant/Station Commander: Highest ranking Sergeant in each Barracks. Not always the most senior Sergeant.
Zone Sergeant: Sergeants who oversee a Zone. The state is divided into Troops, then subdivided into Zones. Usually 3-4 Zone Sergeants per Zone.
First Sergeant: Highest ranking Sergeant in a Troop. Only one per Troop.
Chief Technical Sergeant: Usually assigned to a technical position. For instance, the highest ranking NCO of the TTMC is a Chief Technical Sergeant.
Staff Sergeant: High ranking administrative Sergeant. Could be assigned to any office at Division HQ in Albany.
Lieutenant: Member who has passed the competitive testing process and has the permanent rank of Lieutenant.
Technical Lieutenant: This is someone who may either have the permanent rank of Lieutenant or the permanent rank of Sergeant, and has been appointed to a technical/expertise position where they had unique skills.
Also, in the NYSP, once you receive the permanent rank of Sergeant, if you are an Investigator in the BCI, you can opt to remain in the BCI with the title “Investigator”, while having the permanent rank of Sergeant. This differs from most agencies where when a Detective is promoted to Sergeant, they go back into uniform.
Again, as I mentioned, this is a very, very brief explanation. It’s a little more in depth, but you get the point.

I am increasingly disgusted with the way the media is portraying this guy as the victim in this case. The victims are the cops who were involved, end of story.
As for these so called " minority law enforcement groups" who are so concerned with this case, the majority of them are corrections officers who have no clue what it's like to be a street cop. They should be embarassed to have held that press conference and said the anti cop things that they said. It's funny how they come out of the wood work when a cop shoots someone but when gang members are killing each other and people are getting robbed, beaten, raped, burglarized and shot each and every day, they say nothing. These jerks are opportunists and nothing more. Everyone ran to back up this guys family and his friends version of what happened and now that his BAC is back at a .13 everyone is quieting down a bit. It kind of reminds me of the tawana brawley case all those years ago... everyone ran to her defense and just like the witnesses in this case, she was a LIAR.
I pray that our brothers are doing well as they try to come to terms with the actions that they were forced to take. These cops made the right decisions and did an outstanding job given the circumstances. Just think, you have a large crowd and an out of control drunk driver, if the officer didn't take the action he did, imagine what the outcome could have been if the car sped into the crowd. This cop not only did the right thing, he is a hero in my book.

Of course there have been shootings that in retrospect were unwarranted or mistakes. But, I could probably guarantee that in those cases, with literally only a split second to decide, the Officer's involved made the best choice they could.
Think about the many video of traffic stops gone bad that permeate those reality shows. Imagine conducting your 5,000 "routine" traffic stop, and something goes awry. We are not exaggerating when we say you have a second or two to react. There are some that would advocate the officers wait and take more time to make a "better" decision. Unfortunately, that will inevitably lead to more officer fatalities. It's indisputable.
The best part about the LoHud article is the injured passenger conceding that they drove into the officer, yet he goes on to fail to see the what "prompted the shooting."

Westchester aside, I'll tell you, once you fly out of Stewart, you'll never want to travel into LGA/JFK/Newark again! It is, in my opinion, the best hidden secret. From parking your car, to sitting at your gate in 10 minutes, every time!

Let me ask this, and no, I'm NOT asking because I have a problem with any of my officers:
What about the reverse situation, how long is TOO LONG for an Officer to serve?
We've all seen departments with Chiefs who have just been Chiefs for too long. They refuse to accept new technology, tactics or ways of doing things.
Does your department have term limits? How long? Does it work?
Which to you is worse? A very young 2nd Lieutenant or a Chief that's been in office for too long?

Sorry its so big, but there is a lot of "info" (feel free to read "info" in other words).
Special thanks to ChiefHAC for bringing this to our attention. As he pointed out, if you have issues with this, make a stink. They have one shot to get this correct or we will be stuck with it for 20 years.
  19. SageVigiles liked a post in a topic by CHIEFPHIL in What does YOUR department do for returning troops?
We do not typically get involved with returning veterns to our town. Our department has 7 young men currently serving . 4 are currently in combat roles in the Afgan war. The 3 other men are shortly shipping out for there 2nd and 3rd deployments . A 8th young man served two tours in Iraq and has since come home. When our brothers are on leave, we usually get together at a local resturant. When they shipped out the first time we usually have a gathering at the firehouse.
We send care packages to they guys at least once a year or when they need something. We actually had department license plates painted in camo and were attached to thier abrams and humvees.

Wireless would be 1000x better. That way you are not tethered to the rig, the cords only allow you to get so far from the rig. In a large piece of apparatus like the ladder shown, being farther back where the LCC can see you is a much better idea than being 5 feet tops from the back of the rig where they may or may not be able to see you. Just my $0.02.

A Great showing of support for the Bridgeports Bravest. I noticed members from as far away as Seattle,Wash., and Calgary, Canada. In addition I noticed depts in to cover all of Bridgeport's Firehouses from Milford, Fairfield, Westport, Stamford, Danbury, New Haven, West Haven, Waterbury, and Hartford, so that all of the Bridgeport Members could attend the services. And there might have been more.
A very Sad day in Bridgeport for its firefighters and family members. It was a very Sad day for the citizens of Bridgeport and all those firefighters who attended the services. I hope that the families and Bridgeport Firefighters will find the strength to accept what they can NOT change.
These Brave firefighters died in a type of building that most cities have today. Fighting fires will always be a dangerous business as long as burning buildings have to be searched for occupants. That's what Steve and Mike were doing when something went wrong.
I guess you could say that "I'm on the outside looking in now". And I have the highest respect for what firefighters do. You really are "Americas Heroes"
