The real problem is not if they should consolidate, its how can MV participate equally? YFD provides excellent fire protection to its citizens, while the political climate in MV is to rely on the neighbors.
The real issue is every career and combo will call back off duty firefighters to man spare apparatus or provide additional personnel to the scene during a major emergency, EXCEPT Mt Vernon. The MV Mayor expects everyone around them to pick up that cost.

I think the concern about Mutual Aide is less about the frequency of use, or the lopsided nature of M/A (requesting more than responding) than it is about being properly prepared for most incidents.
If Mount Vernon requests M/A twice as often, so-be-it. Maybe they've had a rash of large multi-alarm fires. (This is all hypothetical) That to me doesn't seem like the issue. The real issue rests in whether or not a Fire Department can handle the routine fires without constantly calling outside agencies. If an urban, city fire department can't handle an "All-Hands" or even 2nd alarm fire, without outside help....they're understaffed.
Mutual Aide should be reserved for extenuating circumstances. Multiple serious fires in remote locations, simultaneously or an unusual and extensive multi-alarm fire. Everyday operations or (i hate this term) "routine" fires should be able to be handled by that municipality. The members of FDMV (and any dept.) deserve to be properly staffed.
I'll also note that the # of apparatus responding isn't even remotely as important as the # of personnel. How many engines to you typically need to supply handlines at a private dwelling fire? Probably 1, but we'll say 2, just in case. Ladders? 2 trucks is probably sufficient to provide roof access and a second means of egress. It's the personnel carried by later arriving apparatus that is important, not the vehicles themselves. We'd all like to see more companies and more men, but I'll take more men and fewer companies if forced to choose.....

No, it is not a DQ or an automatic failure and no they do not take points off. As long as they answered the required 60 questions for the towns and villages, the only things anyone who did all 105 was waste time and energy on unnecessary questions...and yes...prove that they can not follow simple instructions...

I am 60 years old and retired from the fire department and did not take the test. I agree with what you said but you still did not answer my question. All I am doing is looking for a answer, not what you think is the answer.

So I was headed to see my friend graduate from HFD Academy and start her career at HFD, when down the road from the academy I spotted this. I would've nabbed more pictures but I was running behind. Turns out that whole garage has a load of Classic trucks inside.

Retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joseph Langdell, who died on Feb. 4 at age 100, said he felt helpless as he watched the attack.
Cmdr Langdell was the last surviving officer from the Arizona. There are only 8 men left from the Arizona.
You did well, Sir. Rest in peace.

From the news reports, the weather channel, and the politicians, you'd think that snow in the winter was some unusual event that we hadn't seen before. It's winter people ! It's GOING TO SNOW! And be COLD. That's what happens in the winter.

I actually see that as a valid question and not a statement that 60 is in someway incapable of doing the job. A YFD dispatch would probably be better familiar with streets, locations, unit assignment and problems that crop up in certain areas with calls. Based on this valuable added resource a YFD would be a great asset.

I agree 100%. My father exercised regularly and took care of himself. He took a stress test in September and PASSED NO PROBLEM. This is the second time I've heard of a stress test inaccurately diagnosing any severe atherosclerosis or blockages. The only way they saw the blockages was through arterial catheterization. My father wants to tell everyone consult your doctor and see if this is an option. It may save your life or another's one day.

40 years ago today I along with the rest of the Port Chester Fire Dept and the Greenwich FD responded to Gullivers restaurant and bar in Port Chester on the state line with Greenwich Conn. We lost 24 that night some my friends but saved over 100 also that night. I saw acts of bravery that to this day are unmatched by anyone. We gave it our best and for the guys on the front line that night we live with it and still do everyday.

10 replies......6 about lights......ugh. Guess what lights do? NOTHING! Blue. Green, pink.....2 of them14 of them, makes no difference.
Now, to respond to the very good question that matters:
Laautze gave a good answer. I'll just expand a bit. All standard FDNY engines have a 2 stage pump with a transfer valve. We operate in volume as standard practice. This means that the impellers operate in parallel and produce 50psi at idle. When the valve is switched to pressure, the impellers operate in series, one after the other. At idle, the pump generates 100psi(about). All engines are capable of pumping at high pressure (excess of 250psi) however with each additional stage the upper limit is raised and the engine doesn't have to work as hard. Additionally, engines assigned as high pressure units are outfitted with the discharges painted in white. They are a heavier build. They are meant to be mated to high pressure hose, red in color with white fittings. This hose also allows for a tether to be attached. The tethered line must be tied off to the engine and the standpipe Siamese. A 50' safety zone must be established. This is why there are no HP discharges on the pump panel side. Only a chief officer can order high pressure operations.
