If Pass alarms are going off on the fireground by accident it is a training issue plain and simple.

The county requires you have a basic education for this job.

When I was younger I considered it, but after the training films (they were commonly shown on Saturday mornings in the 1960/70's) I did not know if I had the desire to deal with the trouble makers in the parks.

The clincher that it was not the job for me was when the public schools taught us about the 2nd ammendment and the right to arm bears.

I'd still suggest that they be trained to the EMT-Basic level if for no other reason then the likelihood of injuries to their associates. Whether it be fireground, during training, or whatever the environment, having the extra knowledge could prove beneficial.

I appreciate that you like fire trucks. I like fire trucks too. I like getting paid to ride on them and I like looking at pictures of them on Emtbravo. I also appreciate that you're new. I was once new as well, in fact it wasn't that long ago. Someday, you might be sitting in a fire truck and look around the cab of the big fancy engine they bought you and see a 65 year old man driving and a 80 year old fire police in the back. Or you might be fortunate enough to get on a paid job and have one other guy with you or you might even be by yourself. And you will not care how many red trucks are coming but rather what the hell are you going to do with what you've got.

What's there to elaborate on? Couple of the folks looked pretty bummed out...when i asked what was up they voiced confusion/concern as to what was going on w/ the company. I felt bad because i remember what it was like working commercial and companies being sold/taken over/changing hands and the stress that brings to many. Am i not allowed to be a nice guy?

Maybe some but not all words have empty meaning. To be honest I could care less about a name either. But I can say this. You still didn't back up that what he said wasn't true. And while we at a provider level all do the same..not every company is created equal. I have my gripes of things that have occurred where my district is and its unsavory and not even remotely appropriate. I don't work for a company trying to make money..I'm municipal fire based dual role department. Major difference in practices.

After a long 4 1/2 year battle the 2nd circuit ruled yesterday against me, the findings of the court basically say that because of lack of proof they would not rule in my favor. I know the truth, promotions were stopped by the request of the Vulcan Society and senior Black officers of the FDMV. The decision of my attorney to go for a summary judgement was because of the NH20 decision from our highest court. They stated that you can't hold back a list of white firefighters in fear of litagation alone. In my case the City Attorney at the time on federal EEOC forms stated that she didn't want to promote in fear of a lawsuit from the Vulcans. 3 days after the promotion was stopped the Vulcans very own attorney withdrew the complaint claiming that the review of the decree showed that there was no violation if the promotions of 2 white firefighters went ahead. The City Attorney did nothing but ignore the Vulcans Attorney and ordered the civil service commission to terminate the list even though it had 2 weeks to go before termination date. Facts are facts and we will go on knowing the truth and who was involved in this case. That same very attorney is now a city court judge and I pray that she doesn't rule on the bench because of race.
I have to say that I am proud that I stood up and fought this case, even though the results were not in my favor I realize that throughout the country racism is strong in the fire service, against white and black, females, asians, hispanics etc. The brotherhood that I am very proud to be a member of certainly has some issues. I will continue to serve the citizens of Mount Vernon to the best of my ability something that I swore that I would do. There is no other career that I would want to do. I also want to take this time to thank everyone for the donations, words of encouragement and just the support that I have recieved. Its been a long haul but well worth itThe world is round and someday those who were responsible for this mess will realize that.Again, thank you and be safe! FF Joseph J Carroll FDMV

This is an interesting thread. IMO it really does a lot to demonstrate the mindset held by many members of the Fire Service in this region which is such a disservice to those we are sworn to protect and to our own fellow Firefighters....with the exception of helicoppers question regarding manpower (and he is a cop, not a Firefighter), and one other question and answer in regard to White Plains manpower, the whole thread so far is all about how many apparatus respond, with no mention of personnel.
Guys, Firefighters put out fires...Firefighters who are adequately trained and certified for interior firefighting and physically capable. A certain amount and type of apparatus, of course, is necessary, however, listing how many apparatus respond to structure fires is not only worthless in terms of assessing a department's capabilities, it is misleading.

I agree that people " allow " funding for the emergency services to be cut partially due to the " It won't ever happen to me " school of thought.
We all know that thinking that way is a recipe for disaster.
So on the side of the chopper underneath where it says Sheriff will there be a large logo of the sponsoring business ?
I can hear it now - " This is air 1 sponsored by rice a roni the san francisco treat and we are responding to you perp search"
Incidentaly I happen to love rice a roni
