I think a Chief at a LODD Funeral for one of his own men could - at the very least - take the @#%&* bluetooth out of his ear! Perhaps spend a minute fixing the snake on your hat too...
    Unreal.

Personally I don't think they should have to worry about the hits they took from the past few storms. Problem is people are just too damned spoiled and really don't understand the dynamics of power grids particularly when the damage is vast and to primary infrastructure. People think they are more important then the next and that power should be on in 45 minutes. Its getting ridiculous.
As far as more workers...if that's a significant issues...I say absolutely. I would imagine the union would be taking up that issue as well...and I'll be flat out honest...I would say I would support them..but I don't see their union stepping up for their members who like to come in and do my job.
If anything...they are using money on the backs of their customers. Times aren't getting any easier...they should do their best to find a way to lower costs for customers.

Interesting read, both links thanks guys for posting them.
Whether it be Scranton, Pennsylvania (if you know the Harry Chapin song about something that happened in Scranton, you get the "Honorable Hippie" Award ) or some city in California, seems like the message is always the same. I'll give politicians credit for one thing; they sure can go about vilifying people in public service, and do so effectively.
I don't know how they managed to create this "pension envy" in this country, but they did one heck of a job. This fight in Scranton, and greater Pennsylvania, all boils down to "unfunded liabilities." Whoever thought up that terminology gets the "Koch Brothers Scumbag of the Decade Award" (giving out lots of awards today).
It's been stated many times, but I'm going to do it again; the reason cops and firefighters have pensions and sometimes use them is because of the toll the job takes on you physically. Whether it be eight hours in a patrol car; jumping in and out chasing gangsters around a small city in Pennsylvania, tackling bad guys, making arrests...or you want to take your chances on a career fire department, good luck. The stress alone can be enough to kill you.
This is the reason why cops and firefighters get pensions. Okay? It was part of the deal that was created over decades, as Brother and Sister police officers and firefighters DIED, became disabled, wrecked bodies and paid a pretty heavy price for the benefits the guys and gals may get today. We are NOT "unfunded liabilities." We are part of the social contract that once made America a worldwide leader in economics and humanity. Now, what have we become as a country?
Mayors like this obnoxious Doherty guy, I've seem more than my fair share of them. A lot of them go down in a ball of flame, corrupted by power and greed. Many of them have worse baggage than ANY career public servant does. I've also known a few GOOD politicians in my time. They are a rare breed of folk, who take responsibility for good relations with public employees seriously, and don't hurl insults and accusations at the guys and gals doing the job, protecting you from certain anarchy that would come from us NOT being there.
I'm sure, just as in every other city, in Scranton there's a monnied power elite, who have been collectively giving their city and this country the middle finger and the shaft for a very long time. They are the same people who moved out all the good manufacturing jobs over to India, and decimated the working class of the private sector before they set about on their agenda to bring havoc and doom to public employees.
Scranton firefighters are refusing overtime because it's BLOOD MONEY. You want to lay off guys, and then pay another guy to come in and fill his boots, while your BROTHER sits home now unemployed...that's blood money. I'm happy for Scranton firefighters taking a stance based on principle. Tell the mayor to go jump in the river.

It's an interesting situation and I applaud them for taking a stand. Many many many jobs use OT to avoid hiring and this reinforces the fact that they're understaffed. They've laid off members and filled their shifts with OT. Now the refusal of OT points out two things - they need more people and OT can't be relied upon to guarantee coverage.
It's not about their pay or the desire/need for OT. It's about standing together and trying to improve working conditions, an act seldom seen in the EMS community where we happily step over the still warm body of our brethren to take their shift or fill a position. There is little if any solidarity in EMS.

I agree. Drove by and witnessed it first hand. Millwood and somers ladders used to drape flag across rt 6. Turnouts and helmet positioned on chair in front of fhouse along with casket on back of engine. Police details driving around on gators. Been to several lodd unfortunately. Only thing missing was missing man formation and the amount of ffs in class A's. Not trying to disrespect but you have to draw the line. When u make the ultimate sacrifice you deserve the ultimate ceremony. Thoughts and prayers to all of the families and friends!

I didn't know Mike Purdy, everything everyone says about him was that he was all aces. But, why did he get a fire department funeral? I asked this same question when the "acting" Chief of Cold Spring PD died from a motor vehicle accident was given a full PD Honor funeral.
Acts like this dilute it when guys really get killed in a gun fight (Trooper Dave Brinkerhoff) or in a basement (lt Neuner).

Dan, I'm pretty sure we got this knife from this company:

I gotta say....I'm a little disappointed to read some of the comments that are written here. Why are we so excited to see this movement broken up? You don't have to agree with everything they're saying or rallying for down there. You also don't have to like the people who are doing it, BUT it's nice to see a little activism. It's nice to see people pushing back against the establishment because it's our constitutional right. The basis of this action is very similar to the founding of this country. Lets not be so quick to get excited that they're being "shut down".
I don't like a bunch of leaches and do nothings, but I also don't like some CEO's salary increasing 23% while his company sheds 10,000 jobs or the bank he runs won't lend money to the honest working man. The balance of power and wealth in this country is more lopsided than it's ever been.
Remember, if you're a civil servant (as I am)or any other Union worker, these protesters are your friend! They like you. They want you to make more money and be taxed less. The people that they're rallying against want to reduce your pension because it's too lucrative. They want to close firehouses because they'll never need you. They want to ship jobs to India because it'll leave them more money to pay themselves.
Look, it's probably about time they shut down this camp-site and cleaned up the park which must be a disaster. However, lets not be so quick to jump for joy at the end of a protest that has the working man's ideals in mind.

If I was the officer being pulled over, I would never have stopped. I wouldve made that female cop chase me all the way to my precinct, and let the supervisors duke it out (yes, I know, he was on the way to an off duty gig).
Yes, he was speeding and being reckless, I understand that before some of you jump on my back....but being pulled out AT GUNPOINT?!?! I dont even stop people who are in the middle of drug deals at gunpoint! To see an officer stop me at gunpoint in full uniform, duty gear and a marked car, I'd probably pull my gun out back at her thinking she was EDP. The thin blue line is dead cause of reasons like this....now there's a war down in Florida, and I GUARANTEE it will not over ANYTIME soon! I totally couldve seen her stoppping the guy to give him a warning and a hell of a scolding at the most! But personally, and this is just me, take down the tag of the car and report it to your supervisor as well as the other officer's supervisor. It'll get dealt with eventually. This sort of stuff causes nothing but trouble...as you can see...
Just to add....I'd say it's a safe assumption that PBA cards wont be working down there anymore, HA! Be safe out there, everyone...

Before any public safety position is ever eliminated, all non-vital positions such as Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Commissioners, mayoral aides, secretaries, etc, should be eliminated.
