Maybe i'm wrong...but if you ask me the article in question is more about the City Council and Mayor desiring a bit more authority and transparency over the Fire Department. Seems like the way it stands now the fire warden board is a bit antiquated and generally operates independently of the City Council....maybe that was fine 70 years ago, but its 2012...i don't see anything wrong with what the City Council is looking for. Especially when there are career staff involved.
If you're really this aggravated about this whole thing, why don't you write in to the City Council or comment at one of their meetings instead of degrading Mr. Nechis? It really seems like some seriously misguided anger.

Its a high profile event so the manpower will crawl out of the wood work, for sure. Now, competent manpower becomes a different story.

I think you may need to reevaluate the way you're looking at this. I'm not sure anyone is advocating that a shooter or shooters not be apprehended, i think the key is that both the apprehension of the suspect or suspects, the orderly evacuation of those able to evacuate, and the initial treatment and and extrication of victims needs to occur simultaneously. Thus, there may be a greater need to have EMS interface w/ PD in these types of tactical situations.
I will be honest, and tell you that i would personally find it hard to simply leave a child who's the victim of penetrating trauma in a situation like this.
Those in Ohio lucked out - this nut bag seems to have been particular who he wanted to inflict harm upon, it looks like one or two others unfortunately were in the cross fire. After doing what he came there to do he booked...neutralizing any additional threat to the students in that facility.

Don't waste you're time. If you're looking to become an ALS provider you're going to learn more and have more options/opportunities w/ a paramedic card than a CC card.

So then apply to MLSS? No one, except you, can figure out where you should apply and what jobs you should accept. I really feel like you're asking us to pick for you - you went on the interviews, you have to go with you're gut tells you is right and where you think you will be most happy.

Absolutely. That's why I said it would be up to the REMAC to be responsible for all working in their area through (hopefully higher standards then we presently have) whatever means. I would hope it would involve senarios and skills stations. And IMO I disagree that having it be a license as opposed to a certification does have a bearing on our profession. You think the pilot recert program is doing anything for the quality of EMS personnel working in this state? It is a joke. You sit for CME's and send it to the state and you get a new card. With the REMAC being responsible, you could ensure competent people working in the field.

Like "Goose" said, you would pay a yearly fee for your license renewal and would not have to report any CME's to the STATE. However it would be the responsibility of the local REMAC's to set CME/skill requirements. They could do it on an annual, semi-annual or every 3 years as they currently do. But here are some benefits that I see. What if you wanted to take a couple years off to say persue another carrer path, say nursing or PA school? What happens now? You don't recertifiy and you loose your medic card. But if you could send a check every year, you wouldn't have to worry about loosing something you worked so hard to get. It would be up to each REMAC to certify each medic working in their perspective regions. Not to mention it would be income for the state. I pay $150/yr on my birthday to Connecticut for my license. $150yr x how many medics in NY? = $$$ for good old NY. If EMS was truly a career with the same pay/benefits/retirement as PD&FD, and you only had to work one job, then maybe it wouldn't be so bad to recert every 3 years. And isn't making it a license saying it is more proffessional? Don't nurse's get licensed? And no offense to RN's at all(Married to one, mother-n-law is another, most of my aunts are RN's), but I think what a medic does in the field in some terrible conditions is more then what an RN can do at an ER with all the proper lighting, security, an IV team, respiratory and an ER doctor all sitting there. But what is the average number of hours someone in EMS works in a week and at how many different jobs? Maybe that is what the state should be concentrating on doing. Make EMS a CAREER not a JOB.

At least EMD gives the responding EMS units a semblance of an idea of what they are responding to. While it, like everything else in life, is not 100% i like knowing I'm going to a seizure/cardiac/chest pain/etc as oppose to a PD dispatched "transport" or "aided case." Additionally, it can help keep often scarce resources - i.e. the medics - off some of the nonsense....if the system allows for that.
Thats why i always liked the FDNY EMS MDT system...seemed to give the units a nice chunk of info regarding call nature, act as a reference so no one needs to 10-5 the address or apartment #, and keeps radio traffic to a minimum. Oh well!

What's there to elaborate on? Couple of the folks looked pretty bummed out...when i asked what was up they voiced confusion/concern as to what was going on w/ the company. I felt bad because i remember what it was like working commercial and companies being sold/taken over/changing hands and the stress that brings to many. Am i not allowed to be a nice guy?

I hope the firefighter is doing well. What is remarkable to me is how calm and professional the fire alarm dispatcher is, these guys seem really good at their job.

If thats the case, 80-90% of the ambulance services in this county should have their operating liscenses suspended. I really wish someone would actually enforce this sort of stuff.....improve patient care, improve responsiveness, prepreation and capeability and maybe even propell the EMS career foward in finding a viable soultion (because this is in fact a county problem...).

It's becoming more common, and eventually it will be the norm. As EMS runs go up and volunteerism / volunteer manpower pools decrease something is going to have to give, especially with this new future mandate...the agencies are going to be obligated to figure out a solution. Sometimes the volunteers get out...other times you're stuck waiting over an hour. It's nothing personal, there are a lot of really nice people that come out and volunteer their time on the bus and i enjoy working alongside them. The problem is that there needs to be consistency and fairness - the buses need to be able to get out the door quickly and without constantly relying on the same (often older retired) members.
A county system is never going to happen - Astorino would never let that fly. That said, i think the next few years are going to be perfect for the formation of regional (encompassing a number of municipalities across medium/large land areas) solutions - which volunteers can be a part of. There needs to be guarantees that ALS units and BLS units will arrive at medical emergencies in a timely fashion. It's the only viable solution as i see it. My only concern is that the private agencies would come in and zero/under bid service....then you degrade into the ambulance turf wars and contract turnover of duchess county that occurred a number of years ago (may still be going on, i haven't been up there in a while) when i worked in the area.

You're going to see a whole lot more when the REMAC & REMSCO mandate that a bus roll within 3 minute of dispatch takes effect ( see policy statement 11-02 on the remsco website).
