Thats the thing i am sure they didn't have direct contact on the bridge with crew trying to off load the patient. and who knows what the language barrier is on that ship. typical cruise ships have an Italian captain, some of the other officers may be american, but the ABs (Able Body seaman) and the OS (Ordinary Seaman) maybe filipino or another country that doesn't speak English as a first language. majority of the cruise ships have this problem.
The Pilot seemed fine just want to get out of dodge and out of danger and go out and come back in. I bet he didn't know about the transfer till he got to the bridge. Its something that could have taken place out by the sea buoy

You are absolutely correct. The person communicating with FD/PD is most likely the pilot. I don't understand the confusion but it seems to be with which place on the ship the transfer will occur. It may be a problem with the ship's crew as opposed to PD/FD.
HE WAS RUDE??? He had a huge ship that was drifting towards land, shallows and other ships, and as they say in the maritime industry "A collision can ruin your entire day." His job was to regain maneuverability and get control of his ship. I thought he was being very calm in consideration of his situation. Also note that a collision could cost him his pilots license.

HOLY SH@T The tanker is close and they are going strait towards land. He's In big trouble there. They should have lowered the fast rescue boat from the cruise ship with the patient on board and go to a pier or meet up with the fire fighter and do a transfer that way. Also there is no reason why the ship should stop. the pilot gets on the ship when she is doing about 5kts. In Fast rescue boat training all maritime officers are trained on how to do a high speed transfer from one boat to another..
That sounds like the Sandy Hook pilot there is some audio of the main pilot boat making agreements with another ship and pilot captain. The ship can't stop. The current he needs to keep water on the rudder so he can maneuver.
From the Mariners point of view this is really scary that the NYPD and FDNY Marine units can't do a simple personnel transfer while still underway. Its something all mariners do all the time. The PILOT did a great job in avoiding hitting the narrows and the other outbound tanker. Right move in going back out to graves end to. Just get out of dodge, too much traffic to play with. especially smaller traffic that is requesting the impossible from larger traffic.

The most infamous multi-shooter school incident in the US (Columbine HS) wasn't really meant to be a shooting anyway, the primary means of inflicting casualties was supposed to be explosives. Fortunately the two scumbags responsible were TERRIBLE bomb-makers.
These people animals know they aren't going to win a shootout against armed responders. They're high school/college kids, not high-speed, low-drag operators... As soon as they hear sirens its lights out...

Not just for promotions. Most civil service positions now require college credits at the ENTRY LEVEL. Getting a good job with nothing more than a HS diploma is fast becoming a thing of the past.

One of the more ridiculous posts I've seen on here in a long time. Many others have beaten the horse to death- if you are relying on a bunch of high school kids for your first alarm assignment, you have big problems. I started back in the day as an 18 year old with 6 months of high school left to go. My department had no "junior" members and therefore no special rules. Small town, everyone knew me for many years, it was left to my discretion, my parents didn't put any limitations on me, and I graduated with high honors from high school. Fast forward 35+ years, I have my own son who is a 17 year old junior member where we live now. Just finishing FF1 this week. Given the chance, he'd be running on every call he could grab. I as his father have placed limitations on what he is allowed to respond to, and that generally means he goes to NOTHING on school nights once he goes toes up in bed (I still go, but without him). No one in previous posts has mentioned the parental element in this discussion. As a parent of a minor, I make the decisions for my son, not the fire district and not the school when it comes to this topic. He can make all the weekend calls he wants, but if I find out he left school for an alarm, or took his pager to school, that's the end of it.

Well the information that I believe jybehofd was referencing was the development of the "Warm Zone" EMS concept applied to active shooters; where EMTs/Medics will be going in (under armed escort) to collect and evac casualties.
VelcroMedic I know YOU know this, but for the rest of you who don't, please say it with me: That is NOT the same as a Tactical EMS program... (so those of you out there who think we're going to turn all EMS providers into elite SWAT Operators can all cancel your orders for Olive Drab BDU pants and subdued EMT patches... Sorry to disappoint).
ICS is certainly going to be referenced and stressed in the report because if you look at the majority of these incidents, Command and Control is almost always identified as an area of improvement, because the majority of our agencies STILL can't understand the concept of Unified Command and the other central tenants of the system.
Pretty sure we did a thread about that idea a few months back. If someone wants to dig it out we can probably avoid a lot of repetition and postmortem equestrian pugilism...

ITS THE RIGHT THING TO DO my parents made the rule with me when i was still in high school and a full active member at the firehouse. no late calls on a school night. the pager was off. i wish i did this when i was in college and a member of the ambulance corps there. my grades would have been better. Education is why you are there you are a better responder with knowing more. just like you can't respond when your in fire fighter 1 class.

Been there done that (USS Forrestal 79-81). As any carrier sailor knows, you do you share of firefighting on board as well, especially on the flight deck. Always on your toes being vigilant of everything and I mean everything that's going on around you. Complacency kills, as it does in firefighting as well.

well once you get off the coast about 200 miles all bets of a "fast rescue" are gone. Going to sea makes things that are normally ok or simple to deal with at times spin into something very catastrophic. take a broken finger. not properly set, no x-ray and about a week until you can put in or get someone out there to get the person off. in that time they can through a clot and have a stroke depending on there age. I have sailed with many people over the age of 50, some very good sailors.
I have been on the receiving end where they couldn't send a medivac out to pick up a patient who was scalped because she lost her footing on deck. we were in 25 foot seas with a 40kts sustained wind (about 50mph) gust were higher. we treated the best we could, and waited 32hrs for the weather to break so we could put into port.
Im not knocking the fire service, yes its dangerous, and there are more dangerous jobs then fishing or working deep sea. The oil industry has a high injury rate too. Anywhere you mix humans and heavy equipment and then add some bad weather you will have injuries and fatalities. I wonder if OSHA publishes which industry or profession has the highest injury rates.

Have you ever been on a flight deck during flight quarters (US NAVY)...Now that's both fun and dangerous! NOTHING COMPARES!

Kind of amazed at the level of misinformation presented here. The basic facts are:
The Somers Fire District did originally end the WEMS dispatching contract as of 12/31/13. At their request, they extended the contract twice, currently slated to end 9/30/14. WEMS agreed to this for the benefit of the district and the town. This gives them the needed time to fully switch to 60-Control, which is the current plan. The plan for WEMS is to re-locate our dispatch center to our HQ where it can better be managed at the end of the current contract.
Prior to WEMS being contracted in 2002, SFD employed their own dispatchers. They felt rather than continue to manage staff, it would be beneficial to outsource for personnel. The staff is shared between the two services which saved SFD a considerable amount of money rather than having dedicated dispatchers. In addition to dispatching, the dispatchers provide a considerable number of services including monitoring security cameras for four stations with over a dozen pieces of equipment. They also help manage the LOSAP system, state reporting, and possibly most importantly they provide a 24 hour emergency presence in town, since there is no full time police department. This was well appreciated with the recent storms of the last few years.
The SFD continues to evaluate the costs and benefits of using their own dispatchers, with WEMS, or switching to 60-Control. There's really no "drama" or "controversy".
