Oh this should end well for everyone. Where will they be getting all this new energy? Canada? Really? Wind Farms? That should be able to create the same amount of energy of a nuclear power plant. I know Indian Point is old and could use a updating but you cant just cut a quarter of the power and think everything is gonna be ok.

Isn't Downtown Yonkers publicized by City, County, State and Federal Politicians/Officials as being part of a "Prime Renewal Location"? At least New Rochelle FD currently has a much more modern Station 1/Fire Headquarters within their "Downtown Area" to run a Tower Ladder Company, Engine Company, Rescue Company and Ambulance in and out of (in addition to being able to house and store reserve apparatus), where as Yonkers FD doesn't even have a Station 1/Fire Headquarters in their downtown area to run anything PERIOD.

PS - A number of Yonkers FD Fire Stations are as old, if not older that allot of the New Rochelle FD Stations

Some New Rochelle Fire Houses are over 100 years old and I am certain had this house not been in a prime renewal location it too would have become 100 years old in 2066

If they are trying to make it equal for everyone  , then they shouldn't issue 5 point bonus points  for residents...  how is that equal???

Oh, there's absolutely an agenda in play with the FDNY testing.  It's blatantly apparent to anyone who's been following the litigation referenced in the article and other recent actions, like the female that was allowed to graduate despite not passing a required physical test.

While I agree that entry level tests do not require knowledge that will be taught in training. I would be cautious because tests like this are generally only changed when someone has an agenda.

Let me preface this by saying I'm a happy Verizon FiOS customer.

However, I watched News 12 for many years. In fact, I know many people who don't switch to Verizon or Dish because of News 12. Altice wants to do away with News 12 completely, eventually. They are based in the Netherlands, and are a communication giant that will control this from overseas, from the boardrooms over there at least. They apparently not interested in a community service that a local news service provides and keeps customers loyal- it's a selling point.

Here in CT they laid off the anchors, one of which had been there since 1982 when the station opened.

I agree that the 30 minute news cast was less than they could have done. I also know of at least one time when they would not cover a story that they deemed too controversial despite other local news covering it. All was not bad however, I got interviewed as a "Hurricane Expert" once, mostly I think because our fire station was first alphabetically, good thing I had time to Google storm preparedness.

Thanks, just wanted to confirm we were talking about the same thing.

Right and that's what I was talking about.  While checking my equipment the day after a fire, it's not uncommon to find some cylinders that have settled and need topped off.

That may be what you are used to, but in my area it's pretty common for cylinders to be filled on scene and not just for them to be reused at that incident.  Most departments don't have air trucks either, but there are enough that one typically responds to most working fires.  Many departments around here also don't have fill stations in the firehouse, which is part of the reason an air truck is usually requested at some point, even if you won't need to reuse them right away.

I would agree a 700psi drop is not good, but there generally isn't a build up of heat on the fill station end.  At least nothing I've ever experienced.  The heat is primarily generated by the air under pressure being pushed into the cylinder.  The friction of the air passing thru the cylinder valve raises the temp of the air going in.  The faster the flow, the hotter the air gets and that heat is transferred to the cylinder body.

The Fill station on full. I was taught to crack the "Fill" knock and slowly fill the bottle. The valve on the bottle is either full open or full close.

Well this is where checking your gear comes into play. when you get to work and go over your rig, you check air pressure. If you are filling bottles on scene you are most likely using them. Most departments don't have refill rigs so they refill back at firehouse. Either way the 700psi drop in a hour is not good. Also the bottle could have been the last one to fill so heat has been building from filling station.

Which valve, the cylinder valve or the valve on the fill station?

But that's only if it's an incident of an extended duration in which you are using a lot of cylinders.  It's pretty common for us to only need to fill most cylinders once while on scene.  When that's the case, depending on who's doing the filling, it's not uncommon to see a drop in the pressure the next day necessitating topping them off.

They are probably filling it with the valve full open. 700psi drop is a lot. I have filled bottles and lost a minute amount over a week. to lose that much in hours, something is wrong in the process. Slow is the way to go. if your on scene and doing refills then that's different. You most likely will use the air before it even starts to cool off.

"the heat build up raises the pressure"Are they talking about the bottles be "warm" post fire or do they realize the filling process generates heat? I have to wonder how fast their filling their bottles. "Hot filling" speeds the process but always results in shrinkage (never good). 700 psi seems like a significant amount that likely is the direct result of speed filling the cylinders.

  20. BIGRED1 liked a post in a topic by 61MACKBR1 in Yonkers firefighters ask court to block Lowe's until new firehouse is built
Forrest City Ratner, the developer of the Ridge Hill Property, agreed to and a provision written into the Final Agreement, when they purchased the Ridge Hill Property from the City of Yonkers, that $3 Million Dollars would be set aside for the construction of a New Fire House, to be located at or around the New Ridge Hill Complex. Where this $3 Million Dollars currently resides, is anyone's question. One of the first concepts was to build this New Fire Station, and 'possibly' relocate Engine 310 to be housed in this new station (New Station 10), along with a newly commissioned Ladder Company (Ladder 76) at this new facility (there was also talk that the city would then transform the current/existing Station 10 on Saw Mill River Road, into the YFD Fire Museum). Then, back in 2011, the City (Former Mayor Amicone's Office) indicated that the city was currently looking for a suitable property to locate this new fire station (the King Fence property at the base of Ridge Hill, was, at the time, the front runner, to be the site of this New Fire Station. Since that time, nothing has happened on this front, despite continued new development being built at or around the Ridge Hill Complex. Then the city was complaining that while a new fire house could be built, the city didn't have the funding to provide the increase in manpower needed to have a New Ladder Company [76] commissioned at housed at this new station, thus the so-called reason for the stalling.  (Yes - all of the new construction, was and is being built to the highest of Fire Prevention Codes and with State of the Art Sprinkler Systems and Building Materials.. HOWEVER, you have to factor in First Responder Medical Assist Calls at or around the Ridge Hill Complex, that taxes the manpower and response of the YFD. Also, if an automatic alarm just happens to go off at one of the buildings on or around Ridge Hill, YFD normally sends out a Full Response to such alarms. What happens if a call (Could be fire related, could be a First Responder/Medical Assist Call) comes in somewhere nearby? What will the response times be for those types of calls. The Mayor and Commissioner Sweeney can cite response times since Ridge Hill has been in place, until the cows come home. They cannot say that it hasn't impacted response times, because we all know it has. Now we are at a point in November of 2016, where Local 628 IAFF is now suing the City of Yonkers, to block the issue of a building permit for the New Lowes Department Store, demanding the city provide a permanent answer to the status of this New Fire Station at Ridge Hill.

In addition to all of this, we have the issue of the City of Yonkers apparently dragging its feet, as it relates to the construction of a New Yonkers Fire Station 1/YFD Headquarters around the Chicken Island Area. Commissioner Sweeney's comment that the city does need to build a New Fire Station, but not necessarily at Ridge Hill, but rather to replace Station 1. Well Commissioner Sweeney, the Ridge Hill Developer, Forrest City Ratner is NOT going to give you the so called $3 Million Dollars allegedly set aside for the construction of a New Fire House at Ridge Hill, to help the city build a New Station 1 on the West Side of the City. Mayor Spano in a press conference in the Summer of 2015, indicated that bid requests would go out an da bid awarded in the Fall of 2015, to begin construction of the New Station 1. Well, again, we are now in November of 2016, and still no New Station 1 in sight. The city was toying with the idea that the New Station 1, would be placed in the "Hollows" at the site of the old Longfellow Junior High School. Well, that one never panned out. Now we are allegedly back to building it at the corner of Elm Street, Palisades Avenue and New School Street, but no bids to date, have been awarded. No architectural designs and renderings have been made public. Meanwhile, you have Rescue 1, housed across the street from Yonkers Raceway at Station 7 (which is better than having it housed at Station 8). But this piece of apparatus is best served to be housed on the West Side of Yonkers (since you have Squad 11, to be able to cover 'similar' needs on the East Side of Yonkers).

Bottom line, is that if Mayor Spano and Commissioner Sweeney were smart, they would take advantage of resources being contracted by the city, and develop and design TWO NEW FIRE HOUSES, to be built at the same time. Use the $3 Million Dollars (plus hopefully interest accrued over time) to build a New Station 10, and use the funding that the city said it had to build a New Station 1 and let everyone move on.

This is repeated so many times over in America. Most taxpayers consider firefighters as just a burden on their tax dollars. That is UNTIL......... it's too late.

For many, they pay for education, police, public works, but by far paying for firefighters seems to be the biggest problem. Sometimes, these firefighters don't even get the support from other firefighters, right within their own communities. Such is the case where in my own community, so often other firefighters will try to push for the cutting of manning.

People will say, "but firefighters aren't fighting enough fires to make that manning necessary". I say to that, we all are paying for our military and I'm glad when we're NOT fighting a war. Most of us also pay insurance premiums on our homes, cars or apartments. Yet, we don't use that insurance policy unless needed.

To the average taxpayer, a group of career firefighters is merely a burden on their pocketbook. But tonight if they are one of the unfortunate one's, they could very quickly change that attitude. They now call them THEIR HEROs. It happens quickly and without warning. It's happened before and it will happen again. Meantime firefighters are forced to take much more risk than is already required. But most took an oath to perform "the saving of lives and property". We are talking human lives and most firefighters will throw themselves into danger to do whatever is possible to get those human lives out of danger.

To some, Firefighters are a Burden.
To some, Firefighters are a Hero

What always bugged me about News 12 was that they're supposed to be the "local" news source, but they wouldn't cover as many stories as they could.  They simply record a 30 minute spot and rerun it for hours, then do an update spot and rerun it for hours, repeat!  There's so many more stories that people could have payed attention to, say if News 12 did a 2 hour spot and reran it 2 or 3 times before doing an update.  BUT, now that there will no longer be a specific local news channel, even more stories will go to the wayside.
