  1. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in High Volume Foam / F500 Drill
Today a special drill was held at the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services Fire Training Center.
The goal was to determine different ways to deliver high volumes of foam and/or F500 while maintaining a large standoff distance.
    The following depts were involved:
ConEd, Millwood FD, New Rochelle FD, Pleasantville FD, White Plains FD and Westchester DES.
    Procedures/equipment tested and/or reviewed:
Around the pump foam delivery via master stream Foam Delivery Methods Transfering F500 from the county trailer directly into an engine or portable pond. High volume attack using a remote foam source (3% foam @ 500 gpm applied from 225 feet away, with the foam source 150 feet from the deck gun - Note: The system we were testing can place the foam source up to 3,000 feet away from the deck gun.)
The 2 1/2" line is providing a foam solution of 30gpm foam & 30gpm water

Using 5 gal pails in a high volume system (at 500 gpm you need 1 pail every 20 seconds) NRFD's foam bin allows unopened pails to be just dropped in and they are split open and foam pick up tubes are then used in the bin,
Using an Tower Ladder to deliver foam (3% Foam @ 500gpm from 30 - 40' elevation) Note: above that hight the back pressure prevents the eductor from picking up the foam.

I would like to thank all participants and a special thanks to Commissioner Cullen for making this drill possible.

RIP Chucky.....we share the same name but not the same blood....but yet I still will always consider you a "Distant cousin" and more importantly and EMS Brother.
May you look upon us as we do our sworn duty and guide us in the right decisions, and please watch over us so we can make it back to our families when our day is through. We know you are up there, and someday we shall meet again and tell the stories of our days in EMS and the Fire Dept.
    Rest in Piece Chucky.

Due to the fact that some of us in westchester get medics on automatic dispatch is the lack of BLS knowledge out there. EMD should always be done reguardless of the call volume. I cannot begin to discribe who pissed I become when I see "No EMD due to call volume" if its that busy hire more people and get the proper help needed. We are depriving that cardic arrest pt proper care because of someone playing russian roulet on how many dispatchers are needed to run an operations center. Let's face it the amount of EMS calls has gone up everywhere!!! Its time to get prepared. Get these guys some help!

If this can go ice to water and water to ice, I'd think it'd have a market with anyone with ice water rescue. Maybe water rescue where there is no normal boat presence? I can see a bunch of AFG's being filed now.
  12. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic by sympathomedic in Braun ambulances
We had a couple at Empress. Like every other rig, we beat the living B-Jezus out of them for every inch of their lives. They took it like a champ- in particular when we drove one into a parking structure that was just a tad too low. We thanked them by not buying any more of them.
Your post strikes a sore spot for me. Ambulances and motor home are the only two passenger carrying vehicles in the US with NO crash safety standards. No seat belt strength requirements. No rules on strength of the cot mount. You could build (the modular part) of an ambulance out of ice cream sticks and cardboard. If it had enough ceiling height and could be heated and cooled, it would be legal. Once you get 20 horizontal centimeters behind the seats, federal regulation ends. Do a search for "ambulance crash" on the image section of any search engine and see how ambulances dis-intigrate.
Much of this come from here: http://objectivesafety.net/ A site dedicated to ambulance safety. Apparently OSHA considers ambulances to be vehicles, which they do not regulate. The Society of Automotive Engineers (The SAE you see on motor oil) makes standards for vehicles, but they consider ambulances as workplaces and don't regulate them.
Sorry for the long winded answer, but like I said, it is a sore point for me. Last few years one local EMT dead and two severly injured in one car ambulance crashes.

Brauns are very good ambulances. Depending on what the need is depends on what you should look at. I have worked in many Brauns Peekskill VAC runs 3, CCVAC has 1 which is currently up for sale. Currently looked at the signature series nice truck not enough interior lighting. I must say the new chevy chasis do not fancy me. I'm a ford guy and will always love the fords.

Love the engine! Good luck with it WHFD. Another KME added to Westchester. This has to be atleast the 5th or 6th KME Predator. Looks like KME has found a popular chasis.

    Respectfully fireguy,
I don't know much about that neck of the woods you guys are talking about, so I won't comment on it. However, I take issue with ANY firefighter referring to fire apparatus as "toys." I recently rode with another firefighter who referred to his apparatus as I believe he said "a shiny red toy."
This isn't a lecture or anything. Fire apparatus are there for a deadly serious purpose. Those ladders, aerials, pumps and hoses might be the tools needed to pull a seriously burned victim from a raging fire, or get water on a fire to hopefully prevent that victim from burning to death, or dying of asphyxiation from toxic, choking, burning plastics, wood, or a thousand other things.
Firefighters definitely take pride in their apparatus. We love to wash them, test them and keep them ready for those times of need. We love to operate them.
Let's just keep our eyes on the objective of the mission. And it is serious, it is deadly, it is why we are/were there. To answer the call to action.
I don't think you'll hear too many cops refer to their weaponry or rigs as toys. Why should we be any different?
    Have a safe day Bro.
