Tarrytown Asking For Tappan Zee Grant Money For New Firetruck, Fireboat, And Ambulance

38 posts in this topic

Would it be Engine 76 that would be replaced by grant money? It's 19 years old, and first due to thruway calls. Maybe a Rescue Pumper or Rescue? And a new fireboat is definitely a wise investment with all that goes on in the river.

Tarrytown handles a lot of Thruway and Tappan Zee Bridge calls and will do so into the considerable future, they are deserving of the grant money.

Groups hoping to secure money from the Tappan Zee Bridge community benefits fund face some serious competition.
Just a few months after the $20 million pot was created, the state has received a whopping 83 requests for grants, totaling $47 million......

Meanwhile, Tarrytown has asked for a new firetruck, fire boat, ambulance and permanent viewing area along the RiverWalk. Those requests total about $1.5 million, Tarrytown Village Administrator Mike Blau said.

“I would certainly think the village of Tarrytown is in a good position, considering we are one of the two most impacted communities,” he said, noting that South Nyack is the other. “The firetruck and ambulance are first responders to the bridge, and so is the fire boat.”

Engine 77 and 79 are the engines assigned to Thruway calls in Tarrytown. Engine 77 is the one looking into getting a new rig through grants if possible. The fireboat is definitely a necessity considering that the bridge construction and other emergencies that could occur are more likely to happen now than before construction. A new boat will allow for better equipment to be used to save lives in boating accidents, construction accidents, and jumpers. Also, with a new fireboat it can be possible to fight a fire effectively with new types of extinguishing systems on the boat. Tarrytown VAC got a new rig not too long ago so I'm not sure that I heard much about them getting another rig but there old one is fairly old so if they need it, they need it. Nothing wrong with getting new equipment because it will definitely be used. This equipment is necessary to ensure that we can provide adequate service and response time as we usually do.

Its Engine 77 looking to be replaced. They have been specing a new rig for some time now. Im good friends with alot of the guys from there. They carry extrication tools and equipment. If im not mistaken 77 79 and their utility usualy go on the thruway. But i know for sure 77 is the one to be replaced.

Thanks for the info, guys! I meant to put Engine 77 originally, since that's the one I always see going on the Thruway calls and was getting up there in age. It would be grant money well spent, as taxpayers in Tarrytown shouldn't have pay for all the expensive emergencies on the bridge, especially one that charges tolls. It would also be nice for them to build a firehouse addition to keep the Utility in. Is it equipped appropriately to be a full-fledged rescue truck? And I hope they actually get a nice boat, like one of those SAFE brand boats, with FLIR and all the bells and whistles given the fact that the bridge has one of the highest suicide rates in that nation.

E77, E79 and U61 go out on the Thruway. Utility 61 is equipped for many types of calls and I know more is trying to be added to it, gear wise. It could be considered a rescue but I guess with the amount of gear and what it gets called out for I would say that utility is a good title for it as well. And, a new boat would be a great addition since a new boat could offer more room to work on a patient and have more gear to operate with at any type of emergency. Hopefully, these grants can be approved and vital resources could come, maybe even some training as well. Hey, the FDNY got training that came along with that new gear, it would definitely be a win/win because training for the worse saves lives. Also, an addition would be great to make sure that Utility 61 doesn't get beat up by the weather anymore.

It amazes me that everyone has a hand out looking for more taxpayer dollars for their benefit.

If the construction of the bridge poses such a big risk and requires special resources the state should contract them for the duration of the event. Have the USCG put a boat there. Buying a boat for Tarrytown just passes their burden on to others.

USCG wouldn't put a boat there for primarily body recovery, boat incidents, and the occasional fire. They are stretched thin with what they have. I don't believe there is a true fire boat capable of extinguishing a fire or pumping as a water supply on the Westchester side north of Yonkers. . NYS Thruway used to operate their own fire engine and boat exclusively for the bridge, but they don't anymore and haven't for a while. I believe they still have an emergency wrecker, but that is mostly used to clear disabled vehicles from the lanes of traffic during rush hour. With the Thruway Authority's budget even before the new bridge being an issue, they aren't paying any more then they have to.

Getting money from a grant fund would actually benefit Village Of Tarrytown taxpayers. They wouldn't have to shoulder the cost of buying new apparatus that needs replacing anyways, and equipment, and expenses, such as fuel and wear and tear that the Thruway and TZ Bridge (Toll Roads) puts on Tarrytown FD. The Thruway in Tarrytown's jurisdiction is not as simple as a highway that runs through town.

All the money has to come from somewhere, somehow.

Then every fire dept and ambulance corps should get the same thing just not Tarrytown. Rockland sends boats out for the bridge and fire depts sends trucks and the ambulance corps sends ambulance just not Tarrytown. What about them?

I don't know about the Coast Guard but as for the grant, why should Yonkers or New Rochelle (or anywhere else in the state or country) subsidize new apparatus for Tarrytown? Sure, the Tarrytown taxpayers will benefit but why are they more worthy than Cobleskill or Tappan?

All the money comes from us, the taxpayers. It's been said here often, there ain't no such thing as "free"!

Nobody says they can't apply for the grant as well.

They don't have the Tappan Zee Bridge, so they aren't eligible to apply for the grant.

Here's a snippet about the grant:

“A grant review committee is looking at each application and prioritizing projects that directly benefit the communities and residents closest to the constructionicon1.png site.”

The fund, created with a pair of $10 million contributions from builder Tappan Zee Constructors and the New York State Thruway Authority, was set up to pay for road, recreation and emergency response improvements in neighborhoods around the Tappan Zee.

Tarrytown isn't trying to say they are better than anybody or that they deserve the equipment or training more than the next department. We work together on those calls and do are best and if we could all get new equipment and training that would be awesome. But, a department can't be shy to ask for help if it is being offered. The FDNY got a ton of new equipment and training because of Sandy and I'm pretty sure that wasn't just NYC taxpayers' money. They definitely obtained grants through the federal government to obtain that equipment. So, what's the issue if a department like Tarrytown were to get a state grant for equipment; the marina where the fireboat is docked is pretty much in the shadow of the bridge. If this is about somebody being jealous or angry about somebody raising their hand to ask for assistance, you shouldn't be. We all work together out there and do our very best to provide great service to those traveling and operating on the waterway. If anything, those other departments should definitely look into grants so they can get great new equipment as well. At the end of the day, what's the most important thing is that we get out there to help save lives.

What Department around here has not been awarded a grant in the past 10 years? AFG, SAFER, County/State pork barrel grants. All of these grants take from others and deliver to individual depts. If your Dept has not received one, it is your fault for not stating your case properly. I would have been shocked if the local Dept's did not ask for $, i just hope they can justify it. I just hope they have a better arguement than the South Nyack Mayor.

Maybe because the residents of all of these muncipalities utliize the bridge that the Tarrytown apparatus would be protecting? Because the bridge is vital to the entire region which would make it a worthy investment? Wouldn't the economic strength of cities like Yonkers and New Ro benefit from businesses in those cities abilty to attract workers from the other side of the bridge? Or the ability to move their products over the bridge? This is a big picture argument. Tarrytown is (partly) responsible for the protection an important piece of the whole area's critical infrastructure. Why shouldn't they get the tools they need to get the job done?

uscg wont do that they said they rely on local fd.s and county pd for response.there ben meetings pre planing to new tzb project firematic, ems and police.so please dont make comments if not involved thanks,

the bridge is in tarrytown and nyack they are primary respnse to the project and there.s going to be alot of calls out there and alot of workers to.its not going to be under perfect working conditions.so yes they should provide the rite eqiupment and tools.be it fire trucks fire boats ambulance and police suport.

why would you give yonkers and new rochelle the grant money?when ridge hill was built or new roc tarrytown didnt get any grant money.nothing bad abt yonkers or new ro.but take care of the first responders to the tzb thats what the grants are for.

tfd fire boat 5 and shfd fb 7 both have 500 gpm pumps on them and were used to pump water up to the bridge for major truck fires in the past.and it worked out realy good.

primary response to the project and mutial aid also.and greenburgh police and medics.special operations tools and training for the fd ems,pd.

When New Roc was built the developer said their would be no impact and the Mayor & Council agreed, all NRFD got was additional call volume.

Nothing against TFD getting this grant, but the bridge does nothing for N.R. we do not import workers or make products the City of NR is mostly residential and our population tends to commute out to work.

The Bridge is a major part of Tarrytown (& Nyack) they do not pay taxes to support local emergency services, but they are a big user of those services (yes NYSTA pay a small stipen, but it does not cover the cost of the service provided), the building of a new bridge will increase the requests for emergency service, so this is a nice way of compensating TFD, TVAC and others.

You mean they don't have the tools to get the job done now? This is just a way for the state and developers to appease critics of the new bridge and shut up opposition. Nobody in Tarrytown is going to object to the bridge when their fire department is getting a purty new toy.

This isn't about doing something during construction. It's about buying off the locals so they don't oppose the plan.

And those that are saying Tarrytown taxpayers deserve it, aren't considering the taxpayers that will be paying for it and never receive a benefit from it. That's the problem!

What about federal and other grants to Fire Departments for equipment that they really didn't need and could have benefitted another jurisdiction that's sitting around collecting dust?

The NYS Thruway system is critical to the NYS economy. And the Tappan Zee Bridge is one of the most important pieces of the system. I'm not arguing the politics of the grant, the grant is out there and I think it is very smart of Tarrytown to get some money back for all they do for the bridge and the toll road.

Honestly from what it sounds like, you have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to this whole project and the issues we are soon to face out there. And, no one is trying to buy anybody out. That equipment would be used fairly often and the training wouldn't go to waste. We are talking about being able to save lives and do a job the right way. If you can't understand that then you need to get your facts straight and start from the beginning. I don't know what you have against this whole thing but other departments aren't going to be left out. Nyack should definitely look into getting stuff and same with the departments that send fireboats to TZ calls. There is nothing wrong with applying for a grant to get new apparatus and training. I don't see you bagging on the FDNY for all the stuff they got for Sandy. Is that because they are the FDNY and they are more deserving? Look, we all do the same job and want to do it in a safe and excellent manner. Stop hating and just be glad that if you ever find yourself in a tight spot, that hopefully one of these apparatus will be able to come and help you out.

Trash me all you want. Bottom line is that grants like this are nothing more than pork barrel gifts to select groups.

I'm not hating on Tarrytown. I just think it is time for us to get serious about preparedness and buying more toys (trucks, boats, etc.) does little to insure that they're staffed or available.

You have a point if there is a history from Tarrytown, Central Nyack and Nyack with not getting out for "bridge incidents" both above and below.

If not then there is no argument in my view. Why should'nt these first responders have the best equipment available at their disposal?

Okay, but you are missing the point that most on this page have been already mentioning which is that included with this new apparatus should be training as well. It's not like they are getting this equipment so they can say hey look what we have and have no idea what to do with it. Training is the most important part here and without training it will be hard to perform at a top level. I know for sure that training is one of the most important things for the department and there are many members who are trained and want to keep training so they can be ready for the calls that will eventually come. And when you say pork barreling, I know what you mean and I can see where you are coming from but honestly this is not that situation. I highly doubt they would be giving this new equipment just because of some political agenda. Actually, the ones who would be benefiting the most from this are the citizens of the village and the surrounding areas and those who use the Thruway and the Hudson. I can tell you right now, for a fact, that whenever an incident occurs on the Thruway or the Hudson, there are plenty of people who want to assist and do a good job to help people out of a tight spot. Also, different calls can occur in the village or surrounding areas where they need us to respond and we respond with numbers. Trust me when I say we wouldn't be going to something without having the right number of guys on board who know what they got to do. Preparedness is essential in this time, especially with the weather irregularities occurring around the nation and the world and also with the new incidents that we could face because of man made things. But with preparedness, there also needs to be the tools to get the job done. As time goes on, training and equipment need to be updated and there is nothing wrong with that.
