Seems the Yonkers battalion chief made decision here that wasn't favorable to union rules or why would the union post this online. I'd say probably because brothers weren't called into staff reserve rigs. There are agreements in place and if equipment and manpower was needed that is fine, but additional resources should have been brought into Yonkers to sustain the city's acceptable staffing level. The new Rochelle Ic is in charge bottom line and Yonkers and new Rochelle have a great working relationship.

I think you're stretching the role of 60-Control and it's basis in government to suit a gripe you have with a commercial provider picking up the slack for a volunteer agency that can't get out the door.  60-Control isn't "awarding business", they're using agencies that already have a DOH CON to operate in Westchester to cover 911 calls that volunteers can't cover.

Instead of being pissed off that the commercial company is doing 911 calls without an RFP or competitive bid (which is absurd in an emergency by the way) you should be pissed at the agency or agencies that can't get out the door themselves and is creating this mess.

60-Control is a dispatch center.  They don't set the dispatch policy for local communities.  If the local communities are OK with the coverage by a commercial provider instead of toning out another volunteer agency that may not get out the door, why does it matter?  If Town X doesn't want 123 Ambulance coming into their town when they don't get out the door I'm sure they'll call 60 and give them an earful.

Who should be next up on mutual aid?  Or are you saying that there is a mutual aid run card that isn't being used?  If that's the case then the gripe is the home agency and if they're not griping.... why are you?

This is a valid point but also consider this:

If a municipality only has one ladder or rescue, do we permit them to go out of town to the fire training center with a significant amount of the department for training? To go a step further, as the FTC has the only live burn facility, is it ok to take the entire first alarm assignment out of town and rely on the next town over to cover calls with a small crew left behind?

Do we permit the only ladder or rescue to go out of town mutual aid?

Do we allow our only rescue to participate at a MCI drill several towns away?

Although the above reasons are nobler, wouldn’t the results be the same should a fire break out? My point is there are numerous times when any piece of equipment will not be available. Even a municipality with multiple ladder trucks may not have one available at any given time. Do we restrict our equipment to the district and prohibit it from ever leaving to ensure coverage? Prohibit the equipment from going out of service for repairs or upgrades? Of course not. But unlike mutual aid, MCI and breakdowns, we can schedule drills and training events and make plans for coverage.

As much as you may disagree, parades do serve a purpose. They are not there so you can look cool or show off, they do offer a chance to foster pride in your department, see what other departments have in the way of equipment, how they use it, get new ideas in equipment and helps in recruiting.

But the only real answer to ensure the safety of the residents of your building is to spend millions of dollars on redundant equipment and additional millions to build and staff a fire station across from your building. Sounds absurd? Of course it is. but you have to do the best you can with resources you have on hand.

Absent from most of this banter has been the giant elephant that is the Port Chester volunteers.

Now I am not suggesting that the rank and file were part of the negotiations prior to the dismissal of the entire career force, but this thread looks to be painted with financial blame with little said about the animus toward the Union.

So where is the widespread support from the PCFD volunteers? Yes, there are a handful out there support the laid off members, but with claims of upwards of 300 volunteers to support the village...one would think that more than a handful would show visible support?

Why have more volunteers not taken a stand with their "brother" career firefighters?

Have we not heard time and time again "that we are all brothers?", "the fire doesn't care if you are paid or volunteer", "I am a professional too" and other countless canned lines of absolute BS for years on this board and others out there.

Where is the cry of the volunteers? Where is the Chief pounding the desk?

In places like Lawrence (MA) and Providence (RI) were departments were dissimated due to the agenda of a Mayor, Fire Chiefs have resigned in protest (no worries, some boob is always found to sit-in), but the leader took a stand in protest.

I'll throw the gauntlet to the PCFD Chief and other "leaders" at his side....you sure have been quiet about this issue. Your silence is deafening. When will you stand?

There must be a bunch of hearing impaired individuals that live in "la-la-land" on this board if they still want to pretend that this was solely a financial crisis. This appears to be nothing more than good old fashioned retribution against a small labor union.

You want to know why?....Wait for the court documents and depositions...nothing like a nice controlled and sterile legal environment to find truth and oppress political smoke.

Who will stand? The Chief? His subordinates? The Volunteers?

We really shouldn't be perpetuating a bad habit as something that's okay to do.  Instead, we should be putting more funding towards helping these people come off the drugs through treatment and therapy.  Methadone clinics help a little bit, but we, as a society, would benefit greater from having programs that "unhook" people from drugs and allow for either group or individual therapy sessions to stay off of them (think of how Alcoholics Anonymous works).

If you're in emergency services and you're complaining about actually helping someone who needs help - you might need to rethink what you're doing with your life.  If you don't like waking up and going to a call that isn't "juicy" or "salty" enough for you, cry me a river. It's what you signed up for.

Many of the older towns/villages whose departments go back over 100 years have many individual fire companies. One reason was social, however another reason was/is response.

A central station is fine for a paid department whose personnel is in house, but for a volunteer department whose members must respond from various locations, having multiple stations and apparatus can reduce response time.

Wow, I'm totally disgusted by this very sad news. In my 48 years with the Department I have always been proud of our reputation as one of the best Fire Departments in Westchester County. That reputation was earned by the dedicated service and hard work performed by the Career and Volunteer staffs working together. Sure we had our differences at times (some not so pleasant) but we worked them out for the betterment of the service. The Village of Port Chester has been very fortunate to have a Fire Department that has saved many lives and millions of dollars in fire losses over the years. The quick response of the Career Staff with Engines 58 & 59 and the superb firefighting tactics of it's dedicated Volunteers have prevented many small fires from becoming major conflagrations. Anyone in the Fire Service knows how fast uncontrolled fires multiply by the minute and therefore the importance of the quick initial response. In most cases that is what the Career staff provided. To the Mayor and Members of the Village Board, as a former Chief of this Department I'm appalled by this decision. You should be ashamed of yourselves for taking this horrendous action and placing the lives and property of the citizens in jeopardy. I hope your actions don't cause any hardship or sorrow to anyone involved. To the Career staff I wish you Godspeed in finding new suitable employment in your chosen profession. To the Volunteers watch your backs, you never know who's next on the hit list.. In closing I feel a list of how the Village Board Voted should be posted so the residents know who is responsible for this unfortunate decision.....

We spend oodles of money to make sure every FF has proper structural firefighting gear.  Some departments go so far as to provide two sets to allow for cleaning, etc.

Why then, do we continue to wear the wrong or no PPE at all when fighting brush fires????

Am I the only one this bothers?  Isn't a couple hundred bucks worth the expense to properly protect our people?
  20. mamaro40 liked a post in a topic by nydude2473 in Hudson River Incident Logistical Mess (Plural)
I'm going to hopefully just have to say something once and this nonsense is going to end on this topic. It is not right that certain people here are bashing certain organizations that are involved in conducting fire/rescue on the Hudson River. Everybody tries their best with what they have, whether it be manpower and resource wise. Some departments should know what they have and use them wisely. Some should know whether to go out or call in and say the resource isn't available at this time and then get the right resources out there. But, everybody has a role in trying to get good communication going and honestly certain groups don't like to play in the same sandbox with others for certain reasons that more than likely are ridiculous. I didn't hear anybody complain almost a month ago when a fatal tug accident occurred and the initial response was conducted in such an exceptional manor. The first responders got there within minutes of the accident and were able to conduct a rescue attempt that was absolutely textbook. Care was given and the guys went back out there to keep the operation going. No one said anything then. But, that's not always the case and sometimes people need to realize that and get a grip and not put blame on other people. What needs to start happening is working together than trying to work apart. If everybody knows that there is an incident on the River, maybe have a specific Marine Radio Channel open, designated for that traffic. Marine Radio is open to all and all you need is that Marine Radio. You don't need to have to relay traffic from one department to another then. Just have it put out there that this is the standard when an incident occurs. And everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY, needs to be involved and know that. Trust me, no one is freelancing out on the River. 60 Control dispatches and units respond. And ultimately, no one can say anything if they haven't experienced it before or have been involved in the operations that occur on the Hudson River. It's just like the fireground, Stop Monday Morning Quaterbacking and stick to whatever you really know. There are guys putting themselves out there, on the line, and all some of you want to do is dog them...shame on you guys for that! We are all out here to do a service for our communities and to help save lives and property, remember the fundamentals sometimes guys!
