People have been asking why I am so active in the Upstate I/A forum and why I am always talking about Potsdam FD in posts, so I figured I'd fill people in... I am a Mutual Aid member with the Potsdam FD while up in Potsdam for college obtaining a double bachelors in Music Education and Music Performance with a concentration on special needs music. That should clear up the confusion . Welcome to our newest members. I hope you enjoy and absorb the abundance of great knowledge that is passed around on EMTBravo!

An AED costs, well, nothing. They are cheaper than some iPhone's. Every single person with a pulse should be familiar with CPR and the use of an AED. Every engine co. in NYC has one. Perhaps every patrol car should have one as well. They should be in every single public gathering place and someone who knows how to use one should be within useful distance of it at all times.
It's so easy a child could use one. They're so cheap there's no budget excuse not to have one. They can and do mean the difference between life and death. If more people are trained in CPR and more AED's are available, perhaps they're mean life more often.

And god forbid, it's one of the guys that drops from a sudden cardiac arrest... that you knew, worked with, trained with and grew up with. I can't imagine a stronger reason to have than to prevent the death of one of your own. That is a very disturbing thought...

For those companies/depts without defibs... How about sudden cardiac arrest is still killing more of us than fires. That's fine if EMS isn't your job, but CPR and early defibrillation have been proven to be far and away the most effective ways to improve survival. If your rig doesnt have a defib and your members are not trained in CPR, Just do it for yourselves. They're so cheap these days and CPR is so simple that there is no excuse not to.

100% vounteer departments work in other counties in NY (some work in Westchester too...). Perhaps rather than pushing for more and more members, we should push for members who don't just join for the tax deduction... Departments do not need big numbers, they need big commitment.
Telling people to stop by the fire house to inquire joining is funny. Most fire departments in this county do not have people hanging around throughout the day. Some don't even have people there when there is a call!

Sadly, the days of volunteerism in the truest sense seem to have passed us by. With more and more financial issues affected everyone, they really hit home with folks who work and then give their time for little or no pay to be members of the local FD or ambulance service. The public doesn't necessarily see that the same financial burden they feel pinches volunteer or POC firefighters/EMS personnel as well. With more people struggling to make ends meet, this scenario is only getting worse. At the same time, we've raised (rightfully) the standards for training and attendance to ensure a safer fireground. As we just saw with the Tarrytown tragedy, minimum training is a bare necessity.
In appears that in many places, besides LI and Westchester, the VFD's spend exorbitant amounts of money making the FD attractive to people, using new stations, new high end apparatus, FD social clubs, etc. In the end they end up with higher numbers, but maybe not for the right reasons? Until the public understand where that money is going and can measure the results in tangible ways, they may continue to get bilked, even if it is unintentionally. One must ponder the question that most VFD's have more apparatus than they can staff, why not slim down and move active, trained personnel to fewer companies to gain a better response. Far too often we see lines of apparatus at fire scenes with all the personnel working off the same few apparatus. The days of individual fiefdoms is coming to a close and the FD's that embrace the change early will have a position much closer to the "driver" of the regionalized bus, than those who bury their heads and the sand and are dragged into the inevitable kicking and screaming, with no voice in the implementation.
It amazes me when I see the Firehouse volunteer FD survey and so many VFD's have budgets far greater than that of my combo FD, and call volumes so far less.
Seth's has a point that there may be other alternatives to all out paid firefighters, but the discussion needs to be with an independent public committee of citizens who have no bias, just a sense of community. Too many of us fear speaking candidly with the public about our shortcomings and service levels garnered for the money spent. I can only say, that if you fear opening the books (all of them: financial, training, incident numbers) to the public you protect, you're probably not doing anyone, but yourselves, a service. The term Public Safety indicates we're doing this for the public, be your agency municipal, private or otherwise.

According to the court case of Tennessee v. Garner, the use of deadly force is justified when an officer has probable cause to believe that an otherwise unarmed suspect, through his escape or means of escape, poses a significant threat of death or serious physical injury to the officer or others. (The court case also states that the instrument used to dispense the deadly force is of no consequence.) The totality of the circumstances in this case, as viewed through Garner, renders the entire issue moot. Danroy Henry was drunk and used his vehicle in a manner similar to that of any other perp with a weapon, and quite frankly, he and his buddy got what they deserved.

The rhetoric that is coming out from the lawyers and this guys family is ridiculous. The DA says that bonita zelman who is the attorney for the other players who were arrested that night called the lead detectives and said that unless the charges against her clients were dropped they wouldn't speak to investigators about the shooting. Zelman now denies this but i firmly believe this happened and the reason i believe this is that she is a low ball lawyer who saw dollar signs at the outset of this thing and figured that she could get her mug in front of the cameras and shame the DA's office into dropping the charges which isn't going to happen so now she is in way over her head and she is panicing and trying to make threats to get her clients out of trouble. If it can be proven that she made this statement then that is a matter for the NYS bar association to deal with as a possible misconduct issue.
The next topic is henry sr. who was on news 12 saying that the charges against the other players should be dropped because they were only trying to help his son ..... help his son how by breaking the window of a store ?? I don't remember ever reading about breaking a window out of anger as being a recognized part of first aid. The rest of the people were arrested for dis con/resisting, and I ask again, how was that trying to help dj henry. After the shooting dj henry was a prisoner of the police on scene which means that nobody should have been going near him except PD/EMS/FD.
Then we have michael sussman who proved himself to be a huge opportunist during the Yonkers desegragation case and now he is proving to be nothing more than that now. He is alledging that the ME's office fabricated the tox results because it contradicts witness statements from that night ... this fool would try to have us believe alcohol / marijuana and God knows what else fueled college students instead of a highly educated team of doctors and scientists... sorry mr sussman but NO.
The bottom line is that everyone involved on the henry side is grasping at straws becuause they know that they don't have a leg to stand on anymore. Any public opinion they had on their side is now gone - and shame on anyone who took their side to begin with.
During this whole thing we must keep the most important thing in mind and that is the officers involved. I have said it before in this thread and I will say it again, these cops were forced to respond the way they did because of dj henrys actions, the fault with this entire situation is on dj henry.

The damage to the car, as well as the injuries Officer Hess received, should be plenty of indication that the actions Hess took were warranted. If he didn't do what he did, who's to say that this vehicle wouldn't have hit someone else, plowed down a group of other people or continued on, got on the Saw Mill in the wrong direction and killed someone.
I can't wait for this to go away, with the officers involved being cleared of any wrong doing.
  16. sueg liked a post in a topic by PFDRes47cue in What Happened To Scene Size-Up?
FIRST OFF: THIS IS NOT MEANT TO "BASH" ANY DEPARTMENTS! THIS IS JUST FUEL FOR THOUGHT/DISCUSSION.

I have been noticing myself getting quite frustrated lately while listening to different frequencies because I have noticed that a lot of the time (not all of the time), the first on scene Chief or Officer (paid or volunteer) does not give a scene size-up. Whether the call be for a residential alarm, reported smoke from the structure, possible fire of some sort, mva, rescue, etc scene size-ups can be very useful. It does not take more than a few seconds to tell dispatch or incoming units what you have been presented with and observed upon arrival. You can inform responders of building type (construction, stories, etc), exposure issues, visible smoke condition, etc. Giving responders the heads up can lead to a safer scene in general. It is always nice to not be caught of guard.
Now I know that at least on person will say, "You should know the building type or exposure issues for every house or building in your response area." All I can say is, chances are, there is not a single person who knows the construction type and exposures problems for every building in his or her district. Even if you do know everything about every building or house in your response area, I am sure that you would not object to a size-up or reminder. After all, even the best members, or the most senior members, or the members with the biggest ego's make mistakes and can confuse an address.
Just this weekend alone, I heard several departments get called to fires, mva's, or smoke from a structure call. I can count on three fingers how times the first on scene personnel gave a size-up that could be deemed useful by responding personal. I do not consider the common "On-scene, smoke showing, will be out investigating," a useful scene size-up. Especially if the dispatch information was for smoke from a structure. Wouldn't it be a good idea to let dispatch and incoming personnel know where the smoke is showing from (A, B, C, D sides, roof, basement, etc)?
As far as MVA's or PIAA's, scene size-ups can be VERY important. The first on-scene Chief or Officer can easily get on the radio and say, "On-scene...we have a 3 car mva w/ the occupants still inside of two vehicle, 3 walking wounded, one car overturned into ditch with all occupants out, there visible fire at this time. I will advise on extrication and additional equipment/manpower needs." This may not be a good scene size-up and may also be too wordy or lengthy. However, If I heard this while responding, I would know exactly the scene that I was responding to. Scene size-ups for MVA's and PIAA's can be given by either first on-scene FD or EMS personnel (or both). A secondary report could be given after contacting the patients that briefly describes the injuries. (Ie: "One female complaining of neck & back pain who is 9 months pregnant, two males with lacerations, one to the forehead and one to the abdomen, etc"
Has it been proven that size-ups are a waste of time or not useful?
Have first on-scene personnel become so busy that the 10 seconds needed for a "good" scene size-up no longer exist? Have new protocols been put into effect that keep these first on-scene personnel busy from the start?
Thank you to the Chief's and Officer's who consistently provide incoming personnel with detailed and useful scene size-ups!
    Happy Monday!
FINALLY: This thread is not meant to bash any departments, it is simply a general observation and I feel is a thread worthy questions or topic of discussion.

Friday, December 17. 2010 a firefighting family legacy comes to an end. Eastchester Firefighter Joseph Iamonico is doing his last tour of duty. After 27 years of dedicated service to the Town of Eastchster, Villages of Tuckahoe, and Bronxville, working for the fire dept., he shall be retired. His grandfather was one of the first career firefighters for the city of Mt. Vernon. His father and his brother worked for decades for Eastchester FD as well. All combined, it's roughly two centuries of public service from one family. That's simply amazing. Joe, want to wish you the best in your retirement, joining your brother Robert. Any time I worked the tour with you, I always had supreme confidence that the man behind the wheel of 2102 could and would take care of business. And now it's time for you to move on. God Bless, enjoy your well deserved retirement, and thank you for all the extra effort you put in to the Association as well. KBR-359 signing off....
