What you are looking at is the called the dog box or as others refer to it the dog house. Some of us are very fond of that old setup.

I wouldn't be so sure. Lots of those little Mosquitos are trailered around. They don't have big fuel tanks nor are they comfortable for long flights so they arrive by trailer get in the air for what they need and land back on the trailer. Another example of trailering to the scene is for agricultural aviation. Why incur the fuel and flying costs when you can bring the bird to its job behind a pickup that burns pump fuel.

Recently, I had some extra time to take a quick, brief trip down south to Houston. While I was on my way down to Houston, the apparatus I was going to photograph was involved in an MVA and will be out of service for a while. At least I didn't decide to north to go to Dallas-Fort Worth. Got a late start, was going to leave at 5AM but the weather people predicted storms in every city I like to go take photos in. So I slept late, woke up at 9AM, and it was bright and sunny. Go figure.
I got a couple good shots, not as many as I would have liked, though

Been meaning to get some pictures up of our newest apparatus. The engine pics are a couple months old from when we were doing our acceptance testing. We have since added chrome hub caps to the truck.
The Marine 1 and Unit 2 pics were from today, weather was beautiful so we took the boat out to get her runnin since she hasn't seen the water in a while lol.
    Hope ya'll enjoy.
Just got a new Expedition in to replace our old med truck. Bout to have it Striped, Lights and Radios installed, should have pics of it in a few weeks.

What about R4? Is that space between the reels and tools an extension of the frame?

Saratoga Springs E-562 has a full crosslay in the bumper

  19. FF398 liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Front Bumper Crosslays
Now it is called a bumper because we expect it to come in contact with something. So in pic #1 we see that protecting the bumper is a $1,900 Federal Q2 siren.
Now I love the Q2 and I want to protect it, so we add 4 large rubber "bumpers" and 2 heavy duty stainless steel straps (cost: about $600)

Notice that we did not add hose on this bumper. The crew felt pulling it from a low rear bed was better and shortening the bumper extension improved the turning radius and the angle of approch.
  20. FF398 liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Front Bumper Crosslays
While not a "cross lay". The below bumper is rated for at least 30,000 Lbs. and the rig can be lifted by it. It is attached to the frame rails.

It has a 200' x 1.75" preconnected foam line and a 100' x 1.75" trash line (but room to make it a 200' line) Also 1) 5 gal foam pail, 1 eductor and 2 foam nozzles. Both lines are set up as double donut rolls to deploy as clean as cross lays.
  21. FF398 liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Front Bumper Crosslays
When (not if) the rig is involved in a crash, I want a solid bumper infront. Their is no way that this bumper is atttached to the frame structure so that its crash worthy.
Also willing to bet, that a very minor tap or even a minor contact with the ground (as when pulling into a steep driveway) will fold this bumper right up into the front of the rig.
And if you need to tow it or pull it out you better not secure to it.
  22. FF398 liked a post in a topic by antiquefirelt in Front Bumper Crosslays
That is not a new innovation. It maybe a new KME option, but innovation? Not so fast, there are tons of apparatus out there with this or similar hose troughs.

Yeah that video has been making its rounds, but I'm gonna give them credit where credit is due.
I hate parades and taking apparatus and members out of service for one, but that is a topic for another day. These guys fought that from a distance, didn't try to go up to the truck and pop the hood, but just lobbed water onto it. During that video, I didn't see them get engulfed by smoke or steam, and were always a full lane between them and the truck. What happened after the video ended, who knows, maybe they did just waltz up to the truck and go at it from there, in dresses.
The difference between this video and the one about Armonk, Armonk was dispatched to that fire and that's what they showed up with, these guys were just flagged down. Should you be ready for anything at any time, absolutely, but these were two completely different circumstances.
