FDNY vented with the tip of the aerial as a matter of routine. It proved to be quick and effective and did not cause undue wear and tear on the ladder. Fire trucks are tools, unfortunately many departments treat them as parade pieces at the expense of sub-par performance on the fire-ground. BTW, FDNY did not spec their sticks with gizmo's and buff paraphernalia mounted on the working end, so there was no chance of creating additional airborne debris.

Do they do this because they feel salty saying they, "beached their rig"?

From the pictures  it looks like they could have reached any part of the roof from the driveway.

I don't know, I'd say there is a lot of things that can go wrong: rollover? damage to the undercarriage? undesigned stress to the frame? I'd want to be damn sure that what I was doing was absolutely necessary for life or limb. In the case above, it would not appear to have been necessary, but of course we only have a 1/1000 of a second snapshot, so who's to say?

Civilian exposure to the audible warning devices of emergency vehicles is of very limited duration. These devices are only in use while the vehicle is en-route to an emergency, meaning the vehicle is moving. So, unless the complainers are keeping pace with and driving alongside the emergency vehicle with their window down rather than pulling to the right side of the road and stopping to allow the emergency vehicle to have the right of way, they are not being injured by the noise, just briefly inconvenienced by it.

You're not screwing the city, in the end you're screwing the taxpayers.

Great work by this civil service, union mechanic... Too bad smaller departments are forced to rely on private dealers who are not at all in the business of (or interested in) saving fire departments (and taxpayers) money ...

The Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services (BOES) should purchase this vehicle from the Brewster-Southeast Fire District, and make it a regional asset. Maybe one of the county special team members could respond to the TOPS bldg and deliver it to the scene of an active emergency. S1720G is right about that idea. BOES had an idea for a county-wide foam unit, but it never happened, as far as I know. A trailer with lumber for a bldg collapse in the county would be another idea, as would a technical rescue team. Don't know if they will ever happen, as getting enough members to get trained and kept excited is hard to do (and money needed always rears its ugly head).

Eliminated. Why? Look at that mileage . Lol not a smart resource for 1 department. Would be smarter for a county (or several departments to share) to purchase and have it be special called by a department when needed. In areas with poor water sources it can be a great resource but it is A Very specific piece of specialty equipment.

Is it being replaced or eliminated?

Thank you x635 for posting this. I will surely pass it around.

And thank you to the members of the FDNY. Many members of the FDNY are still paying the price as well as their families.

It was a day we will never forget. There are still people suffering from that tragic day. As one famous song writer put it, "Where were you when the world stopped turning".

So much suffering day after day. Year after year as so many will never forget.
