You just hit the nail squarely on the head. These psychos want to BE somebody. They want to be known, remembered, to go down in history. So, when they see the media making household names out of other mass murderers, they see their chance to finally be famous.
If the media would stop making these guys famous, the shootings would stop.

Everyone who claims gun control will stop this, is really looking for a single answer to the problem.
I think you are half correct, if the media would stop, it would be reduced, but we also have a massive problem with the mentally ill. We closed almost every physch hospital and threw them out into the public.

Right, because doors can't be breached. , And in this case, that window next to it renders the device pointless.
How about teachers leave the emergency response to the professionals

I, along with 25 of my Brothers spent 2 days paying our respect to Lt Walsh and FF Kennedy. I have to tell you that there needs to be a class on proper etiquette taught to the younger generation of firefighters. I can't tell you how many members I saw carrying cases of beer on their shoulders walking the streets where our Brother was being celebrated. Guys just walking by the church with 24 on their shoulder. I don't really know if they were career or volley and don't really care who they are affiliated with but their actions disgusted me as well as other New Rochelle Firefighters. If you want to have a few beers between the service and the last drive past the sea of blue please go to a bar. If you want to tailgate and party in front of the civilians like morons please go to a football or baseball game. In front of the church and on peoples lawns is not the place!!!!

Palm Beach makes like 40k less than Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. PBCFR has 1200 members, PBFD has like 40. PBFD has a bunch of richards for Chiefs. Its not hard to see.

A news story earlier in the week mentioned that Marion County in central Florida is also experiencing retainage issues. The average firefighter is only staying for six years so they are losing their experienced firefighters.
Starting firefighter/EMT salary is just under $30K, firefighter/paramedic is just under $36K. in 2011 the union agreed to a 3 year salary freeze, new contract talks are set to begin shortly.

    Hello Brothers.
I have seen this up here in the northeast New England. There is at least one smaller combination department that is amid 4 larger city departments. We are not county operated here in CT. However, our small state places a lot of diversification within reach of each community. That department is "on-boarding" costs associated with employing and developing new FF's if they within a prescribed amount of time leave for any reason.
It seems to me that PB city should as you guys pointed out, just provide the incentive with contract enhancements to maintain those that they are losing. I think they are taking a gamble and figuring that it would be cheaper to hold back the enhancements and loose the hiring costs. It looks like to me they are loosing the bet. Good Luck.

This was a major deal in NY with police depts. and it was referred to as "badge drain". NYPD & many small 'inner city" depts. who's pay was low would train recruits (6 months + of academy) and after a year or 2 they get offered a job with a small village (very high end bedroom community). They double their pay, and have a nicer work environment, the village saves a ton & gets an experienced officer (which includes dealing with street crime at a level they wont see in 20 years in the small dept.) The only loser is the city dept, who is out the training costs. When some of those cities started to pay better wages, the drain slowed.

What a disgrace to the uniform.
And that goes for the Fire Chief as well. What no PIO to at least keep the press informed if you feel like running from the story and cameras? I can tell you from past experiences you need to get in front of a bad story...and fast. They are loosing the public trust of the community and thats about the worst thing that can happen to a Fire Department. JMO.

In the market for a new hood. I know there's a lot of new stuff out there, including the carbon ones.
Can anyone explain the pros/cons of the different options? Nomex, Carbon, PAC II, PBI, etc?
    Any recommendations on specific ones?
  24. BFD389RET liked a post in a topic by SageVigiles in FDNY "Teflon Recruit" Story
Unless I am mistaken it is administered by DCAS as a promotional exam, as opposed to an open competitive exam. Hence the use of the term. I believe I see your problem with it, that EMS is considered a stepping stone as opposed to a separate career track. But personally it doesn't bother me at all, especially when the article is exposing the fact that standards are being lowered for a select group of people in a way that has a negative effect on the safety of those on the fireground.
  25. BFD389RET liked a post in a topic by SageVigiles in Fast Teams- RIT
I will pose the exact same scenario I've posed a million times on this forum:
At the exact moment that YOU call a Mayday, would you rather have:
    A. The team of 18-21 year olds fresh out of Firefighter 1 standing on the front lawn, ready to go with equipment.
    -OR-
    B. The elite "Special Operations" FAST crew in their customized FAST rig still en route from 3 towns away.
People are acting like the basics of a RIT operation are some form of black magic attainable only by the saltiest, most senior Firefighters. Sure, would it be preferable to have a bunch of experienced senior guys to do it? Sure. But the situation isn't always going to allow for that.
Say it with me: RIT/FAST is NOT a specialized unit. It is a basic function that must be performed at ALL fires, just like fire attack, ventilation, search and rescue, water supply, etc. So ALL Firefighters need to be trained to perform it... Are some people going to gravitate towards that training more than other aspects? Sure, as with anything else in the fire service. But its not a something that any of us can say is "not our job." It absolutely NEEDS to be a part of basic Firefighter training.
