Bottom of Da Hill liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Piermont,ny FD Double Wetdown
Lights and siren, with people riding on top? Are you kidding, this is not tradition, its just stupidity.
I know nothing about this department, other than this snap shot of how unprofessional they are and what a poor example they are setting for the members, the dept., the community and the fire service in general.
I am surprised that no one else is commenting on this aspect.
Fire Chief X, please tell the jury if their is a plaque on the vehicle stating "death or serious injury can occur from ridding on top or on the tailboard"
Same question to the driver:
Fire Chief X, (and Driver) Do you have a riding on top policy or a seat belt policy?
Why did you allow, why did you operate with members in such an exposed position.
Tradition is not an answer the jury will buy.
As the chief, you are risking your people and the financial downfall of the department. You may also have personal liability.
As the driver, do you know that if someone is killed in this stupidity, you may forfeit your home, your car and your salary for years to come.

Bottom of Da Hill liked a post in a topic by fire 1 asst chief in Town Of Ossining In Contract Negotiations With Village For Police Force
WCPD took all of the Town of Ossining's officers including the chief who was made a captain.
If the County looses the contract then they should no longer need the personnel they hired from the Town of Ossining.
In theory these people should be laid off.

That's not the case here. There are no Town cops to hire, they all already work for the County.

I guess it's cheaper in the long run to have it's own p.d. then to contract with county. It's all a bed of roses in the beginning we will save you money , but after time the price goes up because know we are in.

The trip is not free.
Depending on the location of the factory (Airfare, hotel meals, etc.) The costs for flying to mid west for example add approx. $1,000 per person per trip and that is built into the cost of the truck.
The "Dealer does not pay" he fronts the money and you pay as part of the cost of the truck.
So 10 members going on pre-construction, pre-paint and final to Pierce or Seagrave or Ferrara, Smeal, Spartan etc. will cost $30,000 that your tax payers will cover.
Also with that size group, their are almost always more "add-ons"..."Hey look at the spinny light that mildew hose has on their new pumper, we need that too" I have been told by manufacturers that they can easily see $50K - $100K in increase because of it.
We send the spec writer and the mechanic. Unless its driving distance, then we might add a chief.

You did. And this price seems to be the norm now for Rescue-Pumpers. Just imagine if it was on a Seagrave or Pierce chassis, I would wager to bet it would be closer to $800,000.
Good luck AFD.

Bottom of Da Hill liked a post in a topic by FFEMT150 in A Good Job: Stories of the FDNY (HBO Documentary Films)
Most of the documentarys I have watched about the fire service tend to focus on more of the tragedy we encounter (atleast in my humble opinion). This however, I feel had a focus on the brotherhood and cammeradery found in the station. One example I can think of off the too of my head is the film "into the fire". A large part of that documentary was facing loss of life in the fire service. Again, this is how I perceived it. While there was quite a few mentions of loss of life both civilian and firefighter in "a good job" they were followed immediately by stories of how the firefighters involved in the incident found comfort in each other. Again, this is how I perceived the documentary. My question for you is: were you able to see "a good job" tonight and did you feel the same way?

Bottom of Da Hill liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Why Open Cabs?
Both as horse drawn and as early motorized weight was a major consideration as they did not have the power to overcome the additional weight, but then something happened they most have missed here, in the 1930's we started building enclosed cabs.
During the 2nd world war, most depts. could not purchase anything as most metal was being directed toward the war effort. and immediately after the war there were still delays in the recovery. We found some depts. started buying them and then they disappeared until cities needed to cover the members for protection.
