Prime example of live in program Prince Georges County Maryland  Collage Park Co.12 & Branchville Co11 have live in programs I believe others as well Note Collage Park Co 12 has excellent  dorm space for the live in's  If anyone's in the area stop on in they were very receptive to us when we stopped by while visiting my sister at UofM college park

It was a Lose/Lose Deal. Hopefully in time, that could change.

My guess is that at these Live In Firehouses, "someone needs to be in charge". Someone who is willing to make sure everything is under control within those four walls. A kind of Lt/Capt thing. Not just a title but with the authority and responsibility to enforce the rules. With the understanding that if things should go sour, this guy owns it. Therefore there should be some incentive for a responsible person to accept this.

I once approached the chief of an upstate NY fire dept about starting such a program. Their firehouse then had sufficient room for attendees. His response was, "We don't need none of you a&%#@!* college f&%$@#* !!! At the time, I was already a qualified pump operator in my home volunteer fd. Wish I had a buck for every time their siren went off and I would go to buff and wait, and wait, and wait for them to respond. Given the national trend, I'm sure they're still short handed. A case of LOSE/LOSE unfortunately.

This is an EXCELLENT idea and an EXCELLENT opportunity.  It's been done in many other places across the country as well.

A chance to further your education
A chance to serve this community
A chance to have a place to live at no cost
A chance for those interested in the fire service to continue while going to school

A WIN/WIN for ALL. I just wish they had something like this when I was younger.

I have a different spin on this incident.  Lets forget who called who   and I am asking this of anyone at the scene,  what did you do?  Was it readily obvious that it was refrigerant that was leaking,  or had already leaked (puddle on the floor),  was the area metered by a 3 or 4 gas meter prior to hfd arrival?  and what were the results of that.  (decreased o2 levels), was the erg book used asap?  what did the HFD meters tell you when they were used?  And what did you do to mitigate the incident?  Lets learn from a haz-mat call   thanks.

It's being wasted on massive duplication of services

We all have to stop acting like 5th graders and act like adults who know better , To not call an agency because they don't call you is stupid, foolish, and deadly. Sooner or later you will be called out and be held responsible for by passing agencies.  Boooohoooo they didn't call me. So I am not calling them waaawaaawaaa. Total stupidity

Firstdue...while I understand where you're coming from, you must think rationally.
Why call Fairview (or any other career dept)? Because you know exactly what you're getting. No matter what you request (Eng, truck, rescue), you'll get it with a full compliment of QUALIFIED FF's.
Call a volunteer Dept (especially on a weekday), you may get "uncle Joe" the 70 year old chauffeur with an 18 year old "officer" and god knows who else on the back step.
There may be 1 or 2 vol FDs "closer," but a career dept may get there much faster even if they are "farther" away.
Look, I'm a volly and know where your thought process is. But you have to think logically and choose M/A wisely.
We have Newburgh on our run cards because we know exactly what we're getting when we call them. That is a very reassuring feeling.

    Stay safe

Don't they man the rescue with the firefighters from the ladder in HQ ?

The rank and file need to go door to door and inform the citizens in the L34 response area of what is going on.

Im sure HFD will either recoup the cost involved from YHFD or will absorb the costs as part of its budgeted mutual aid expenditures.

My understanding is that the HFD has a proactive automatic/ mutual aid plan in place with several of its neighbor fire districts/ departments. Im sure it's fire protection was not reduced.

The HFD Capt /YHFD I.C. knew what resourses he needed to mitigate the situation and got them to the incident in a timely manner.

     Perhaps unusual but effective.

especially when the county has a HAZMAT team and resources sitting at DES with the special ops chief on call.
