All of our rigs have roll up doors. I would say that unpainted doors are better. The problem is that the doors take a beating in the rolled up position, when your moving tools about the inside of the compartment. The door when rolled up on the drum tends to get scratched from the tools. In a busy company you can tell which compartments are opened the most by the scratches. Example ems compartment or the compartment with the irons and can ect. Also I notice we tend to over wash the rigs and leave a lot of swirl marks from the brush. We wax the rigs once a year. Boy do I wish we had non painted Doors then. Cleaning wax between the slats blows!! Big time.

I wanted to congratulate Chief Fitzpatrick on his well deserved retirement. Many people know how he was key in developing Yonkers FD SOD to the finest in the region. But, he was also key in improving special operations countywide.
While Yonkers clearly has the best capabilities in the county, Chief Fitzpatrick was able to evaluate the gaps and realized that additional resources beyond Yonkers would be required for a large scale ongoing disaster. He proposed to the Westchester Career Chiefs Association the concept of the Westchester Special Operations Task Force (WSOTF), and then he created it. He was able to get federal funding for the training and equipment, which he spec'ed, purchased and distributed to the 9 departments.
He oversaw the training of over 700 firefighters to the Hazardous Materials Technician level and another 500 firefighters to the Technical Rescue Technician level. He was also directly involved in the oversight of the development of the Westchester Tech Rescue Team where his experience convinced the county to adopt minimum training standards for the team. He also was one of the lead instructors at OFPC Technical Rescue School at Camp Smith.
From Hazmat, WMD, a building collapse, trench collapse, confined space incident or a high angle accident the public and all emergency responders are safer today because of his leadership.
Chief, you accomplished what few have ever done. Job well done.
    Enjoy your retirement. Be well.

Regarding the site's editing policy, I'd just like to observe how the process has changed over time:
    USED TO BE:
*You could delete any of your posts, anytime you felt like it. This apparently disrupted the flow of the threads, so it was eliminated.
*You could edit your posts going back in time with no limits.
*Used to be if you edited, it was a note at the bottom of the post.
    NOW:
*There's an "edit window" where you get a chance to correct or reword for a limited amount of hours.
*If God forbid, you DO edit you weasel, it looks like a big dirty pencil eraser that says "edited by such and such" in bold letters.
*So think twice before you edit. It's obviously frowned upon. You weasel. lol
Edit: I admit it, I've edited!

After a long 4 1/2 year battle the 2nd circuit ruled yesterday against me, the findings of the court basically say that because of lack of proof they would not rule in my favor. I know the truth, promotions were stopped by the request of the Vulcan Society and senior Black officers of the FDMV. The decision of my attorney to go for a summary judgement was because of the NH20 decision from our highest court. They stated that you can't hold back a list of white firefighters in fear of litagation alone. In my case the City Attorney at the time on federal EEOC forms stated that she didn't want to promote in fear of a lawsuit from the Vulcans. 3 days after the promotion was stopped the Vulcans very own attorney withdrew the complaint claiming that the review of the decree showed that there was no violation if the promotions of 2 white firefighters went ahead. The City Attorney did nothing but ignore the Vulcans Attorney and ordered the civil service commission to terminate the list even though it had 2 weeks to go before termination date. Facts are facts and we will go on knowing the truth and who was involved in this case. That same very attorney is now a city court judge and I pray that she doesn't rule on the bench because of race.
I have to say that I am proud that I stood up and fought this case, even though the results were not in my favor I realize that throughout the country racism is strong in the fire service, against white and black, females, asians, hispanics etc. The brotherhood that I am very proud to be a member of certainly has some issues. I will continue to serve the citizens of Mount Vernon to the best of my ability something that I swore that I would do. There is no other career that I would want to do. I also want to take this time to thank everyone for the donations, words of encouragement and just the support that I have recieved. Its been a long haul but well worth itThe world is round and someday those who were responsible for this mess will realize that.Again, thank you and be safe! FF Joseph J Carroll FDMV

Hey wait a second. You're not allowed to have Bravado about this; even the guys that work it don't carry that!
Additionally, great post Cap Nechis. Reads like something out a textbook, complete with the perfect textbook photo; that van!
But hey let's face it. The history of the FDNY Rescues. It was more about the function than what they carried wasn't it? Wasn't a torch the most sophisticated piece of equipment for a long time? And I say this in absolutely no derogatory way. The mystique about a Rescue Company was because it carried guys like Tommy McTigue, and the culture of humility, although I'm quite sure many truckies from the FDNY would scream about that point.
And I have no qualms about showing the EFD Rescue or describing it a bit. However, there are many more stories in the big county, many more Rescues that carried even less than we did...and I'm talking manpower. lol

Incident Updates from the Incident are on my twitter @samzack ... As seen in the IA the Abis Japanese Restaurant had a fire that started in the kitchen. Fire was pretty much knocked down upon my arrival, a police officer stated that flames were coming from the vents on the roof, and the fire extended into an interior wall, which after 45 minutes or so, was under control.

I have more shots but they're mainly of apparatus on scene.

In the early 70's back in my original dept., the chief appointed a good friend of mine who was under the "minimum height requirement of 5'8" in bare feet". When a member of the [comic] common council questioned the appointment, the chief responded that in all of his years of service, he has yet to see a guy fight a fire in his bare feet. The appointment stood and made good reading in the local gossip sheet.

? I have actually seen people with dwarfism pull 5 inch off the engine (not that hard, just grab the first length and run with it). Are you saying they need a larger hook than other people or that cause they are shorter they will grab the wrong one? Ok, so they need to get a bigger hook oh well. Do taller people use smaller hooks? Is that wrong? Uh we all use ladders there pal. I've also seen a ff with the same situation grab a 24' fiberglass extension ladder off the side of the engine and carry it to the side of the building and raise it up alone with no assistance whatsoever. If someone can do the job who cares what they look like or how they overcome it to get it done.

I had the privilege of being Jeff's instructor on several occasions and can tell you he is one of the most dedicated and motivated students I've had and is a very capable firefighter who earned every single certification he has by far exceeding the minimum standard. I would work with Jeff any day.
To simply put it..you have to meet the standards. We can debate what the "minimum" standard is, but everyone who enters a course, I can assure you at a "minimum" is meeting the standard of the curriculum set forth by NY State and the NFPA.
