I guess you never let your hands slip from the 10 and 2 positions on the steering wheel and never look over at the car next to you to see if that head of blond hair is a babe or a boar. Oops did you just change the radio station or reach for a coffee cup? That must have caused a horrible crash!
Your condemnation of the police in this effort is off base and undeserved. The cops can drive and look into the car next to them without crashing. I don't think you're going to see any more accidents involving cops because of this.
As for the vehicles, state bid vehicles are way less than 40K. The fact that they're different from regular marked Tahoes was the pitch to the media to get them interested. Really not that big a deal.
People don't pay attention to anything so they're not going to see these Tahoes or marked vehicles or a line of flares or that red light. Drivers suck!

Volunteerism is a honorable thing, i think few would argue that. However, the volunteer EMS system simply doesn't work here - it cannot guarantee a timely and appropriate response to requests for service. Its 2013, enough is enough already.
Have to say that i "face-palmed" quiet a few times watching this video. I think it's honorable that leadership met with the town and was honest about the situation - but i just feel it was a bit too "off the cuff." That said, correct me if i'm wrong, but there currently exists no legal requirement that a municipality in NY State provide EMS service (i remember this being an issue many years ago up in Pawling).

I hope this also helps with the aggressive driving that has become the norm on 684.

Mount Vernon is almost 70,000 people living in 4.4 square miles. They have a big crime problem but their PD is dealing with it. How did Camden get so messed up? Their PD is bigger than Mount Vernon's too.

Isn't Ladder 71 the busiest in the city and the only tower on the west side? 72 and 74 are straight sticks and 75 would be coming from Fortfield. That's a long way for a job down in 303 or 306's first due areas.

Congrats and kudos to the Troopers and the FD chief that took advantage of the available resources.
    Glad nobody was hurt.

I will not pre-judge the driver as anyone who has been in EMS long enough has run a red light at some time in their lives. IF we run red lights it is only a matter of time until we get hit That said, if he had a 'do over' on this, I wager he'd have exercised more caution.
It brings up several good points. First, actions have consequences and we now live in a world where it is increasingly likely that those actions will be recorded.
Second, if one does the math, we 'outrun' our sirens at about 15 mph in an urban environment, taking into account sight lines, echoing, car soundproofing and reaction times. Approaching any intersection faster than that is pushing the envelope.
Third, any agency that is using electronic data collection to track and push its members about response times might want to think about what can happen when you make numbers a priority.
Fourth, the stretcher broke loose. I thought it would have held.
Fifth, there is a new DOH policy statement about being belted in at all times. Before we all jump up and down and point out how stupid that is, watch the video one more time.

I'm sure that people realize it but I'll say it anyway.
Just because you've disconnected a battery doesn't mean that an airbag will not fire. You still need to exercise caution around all airbags.

I can't believe no members of the Aviation Bronx Fire Patrol have come here to defend themselves and their so called department. You know they're members here.
So guys, what's the deal? Are you and FD or JB (just buffs)?

To bad the price is not as bad as we would think, but the cost is our safety.
In Westchester thats not correct. Most career depts. have been reducing manpower since the 1970's. Almost every volunteer dept is having major manpower shortages. The combination depts. were set up with a few career members to augment the volunteers and in Westchester what has happened is they have not increased the career staffing, but the volunteers are almost gone. Thus leaving a massivly short career staffed dept. that has 1 18 y/o and 1 70 y/o volunteer who show up sometimes. The problem is the community still think they have volunteers so there is no need to add career members to replace them.
While this is very true in places like Stamford. In Westchester there is almost no suggestion of consolidating career & volunteer. We can not get career & career together or volunteer & volunteer. And in many cases its not the fire fighters or even the departments that are against it. In one community, they are against consolidation of the FD, because if it works, then we might have to consolidate the schools, and we dont want that because our kids are better than their kids and we dont want them to go to that "other" school".
Its called failure to lead and a big part of the problem is time. Volunteer chiefs are rotated so often that they never learn to lead or have the time to develop into true leaders and in some cases career chiefs who have been in so long that they no longer have vision.
Its incomprehensible to me how many are not fully prepared to handle a simple room and content fire in their 1st due area.
    Nope lots of good points.

Besides the prejudicial tone of one of your posts and now the addition of yet another location....and I know the area as I drive it several times a week...I'd probably had asked you a bunch of questions as well. No one said you were wrong for what you were attempting to do. Your wrong for ringing someone who was apparently attempting to do their job.

Licensure vs certificate has no bearing on the perception of EMS as a career or just a job. It has zero bearing on our pay or our respect as profession. Its a semantics argument and nothing more. Guess what, doctors and nurses have to regularly recertify with their various boards through testing and continuing education. Instead of paying the state for our license and then some private group for their seal of a[[roval we just have to pay the state to retest us. I don't want someone stepping away for a few years and then being able to come back and work just because they've been paying their dues. We b**** constantly about the decrease in standards yet people would encourage something like this??
