  1. I've heard Hawthorne numerous times over the past couple of weeks going mutual aid to Pleasantville for EMS calls.

Does Hawthorne have a paid crew for their ambulance? Do they send them on mutual aid? If they do send the EMT's Hawthorne pays for, are the Hawthorne taxpayers footing the bill to cover all these Pleasantville calls, technically giving Pleasantville free paid staff?

Yes Hawthorne does have 2 paid EMT's from Empress EMS staffing the ambulance 24/7.

Yes the paid staff does respond mutual aid so yes they do respond into Pleasantville.

And despite what others posted in here Hawthorne FD has recruited members for EMS over the years. The new recruits join and feel that unless they are sitting at the station 24/7 it is hard for them to respond to calls and get any real time and on the job training because they can never make it down to the firehouse before the ambulance gets out the door. Those members resign fairly quickly and have been told to try other VAC's for example PVAC. Having paid staffing in our EMS system to me is a double edge sword on one hand the ambulance is getting on scene in a timely fashion to provide quality pt care but on the other hand it deters a lot of new recruits away.

I've been saying this for years that its time for a Mt. Pleasant EMS system to take place.... PVAC is the last VAC in Mt.Pleasant to run a strictly volunteer ems system they see the issues they are having and are working towards a solution. Maybe its time for everyone to look at the bigger picture here and combine EMS services in the Mt.Pleasant area.

Maybe we can stick to the topic at hand now about EMS service in the Mt. Pleasant area. If someone would like to talk about Thornwood FD and Hawthorne FD's dual response they had set up for 1 year we can start a separate topic.

  3. We tried using East Fishkill’s system as well and it worked for a while, but water always found a way in overtime and destroyed the paper so we were always replacing the cards. We went with a hard (credit card) type of card that has dept. name, firefighters name, photo id, dept id, and interior / exterior on it. We then put it inside a hard plastic luggage tag holder green for interior red for exterior. We ended up buying a card printer which comes with design software and use it to make yearly dept. membership Ids as well as the gear tags.

Do you have the name of this software?

  6. While I agree this topic has been beat to death on this site I do believe departments need to have a strict set of rules and regulations about this. I will not take my car anywhere I can not respond from in a short amount of time. I do agree that having a district owned vehicle 30-40 mins out of your first due area is abuse of the system and needs to be addressed by the powers to be. It just doesn't look right to the public and especially to the taxpayers during these hard economic times. Just my 2 cents.

  7. At 0130 hours Fire and EMS get dispatched to a local highway for an MVA with injuries. Upon arrival you find a 1 car MVA with heavy front end damage and the driver already in police custody. EMS crews attempt to treat the person in custody and are denied access to the patient by police. Police state they never called for EMS and that EMS cannot see or treat the prisoner. After discussing the issues of not checking out the patient who is highly intoxicated for about 15 minutes Police finish up the report and clear the scene with the patient. As an EMS provider what do you do?

  8. My former dep't had a policy that we did not reset alarm systems.

The law dep't stated that the fire dep't would be liable once it reset the system should the system malfunction.

Can you post that law here?

We have no written policy on resetting the alarm but as long as there is no password required to reset we will do it before we clear the scene if the building is unoccupied.
