It's a new Lenco Bear, larger than the BearCat units and similar in size to the POT (Photo observation truck) unit.
The 'roof racks' are hydraulic platforms for officers to make dynamic entry to upper floors of a building, plane or give access to other elevated areas.

The more important issue that needs to be focused on is if these young adults want go on to a career in emergency services they are going to need a HS diploma with a decent GPA because most promotions now look for college credits. If they are looking in other directions and being a volunteer is just for the "volunteer" section of the college app then they still need to focus on that GPA. A side from that if they are content on practicing the line "do you want fries with that?" then by all mean stay out all night seven nights a week. What needs to be understood is these "unfair" rules are being "imposed" by a group of well seasoned adults that "have been there, done that" and trying to provide guidance that to a young mind can appear to be restriction.

If they're still in High School, that should be their priority. EVERYTHING comes second to them completing their education (figuring out those pesky pump calculations is much more difficult without simple Math)-- yea, I'm stretching that reasoning a little bit, but I think we see the point.
I think the department should be commended for this!!! The higher ups seem to be leading this young, impressionable minions along the correct path. This path means that there are bigger things than coming down for "big one" (let's face it, we've all missed the "big one" at one point or another).
I don't think you see it right now, but I hope you will, but it seems like this department is saying "I want your help, I need your help, but I don't need it THAT much, you do what you need to do, and that means finish school, we've got this"
    Kudos!

Kids in High school belong in bed well rested for the school day. They don't need the added stress of responding to emergencies, nor do they need the distraction. If your dept. relies on 18 year olds in school, then they're in trouble.....

Some rank and file EMT who has no idea what they're talking about.
The issue is not, "what took them so long to get there". The issue is, why was there a delay in dispatching them. There was too much time between the transmission of the 10-75 (which should initiate an EMS response) and the actual dispatching of ALS and BLS units.
This individual, Marcella, is clearly taking the press coverage personally. When in reality, the EMTs and Medics on the street are not being questioned about the adequacy of their response. EMS members should really be asking the same questions. "Why did it take so long for us to be sent?". I'm sure they are asking themselves that.
  10. PEMO3 liked a post in a topic by x635 in Emergency personnel advise against publishing scanner traffic
This article mainly relates to PD and the media, but it does scare me that there are hundreds of Facebook groups that post word by word transcriptions of what comes across the scanner, and anything that comes across the scanner, most of the time the instant the transmission ends.
In effect, these sites are the "media", as reporters monitor those FB Groups for leads, and I've seen several recent examples of a group publishing an incident, the media publishing what they posted, and got some very, very wrong information out there that could have been catastrophcic. It's also amplified by one person with a scanner posting information that could potentially be read by thousands.
We do post Incident Alerts on this site, as we've done for over 11 years. Our members that post do monitor scanners, and a lot use other sources, like being on scene themselves. We have strict rules and guidelines on posting Incident Alerts, and would rather do quality over quantity and quickness. Facebook has really changed the game in many ways with "buffing".

Really sad about the kids, however since the word lawsuit has now been mentioned due to response delays maybe its time for the responsible parties to be charged for not having working smoke detectors. Easy to sue the city and blame EMS for there issues but what about those that dont follow law in regards to smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. City will hand out money to settle this and those kids will never be back, a shame that the parents will "profit" from this loss.

The words of a responding Police Officer at approximately 6:57 on the audio says it all, "Why are you sending PD in there if it's a fire?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItKHjeNjcZM For everyone who is posting as if the injured and deceased police officers' actions are being questioned, please take a breath and understand that it's realized and respected that these officers were brave in their efforts to do what they thought was appropriate. Their sacrifice (as well as that of their families) is immense. What's troubling to me as a firefighter is that the NYPD has never trained their personnel in the proper actions to take or not take at a fire scene. The department is 100% guilty of placing its personnel in grave danger every-time they dispatch them to a 911 call reporting a building fire. PO's are motivated public servants who are going to take action when they respond to any incident. If there is no formal training and no official department guidelines for actions at a fire incident, these motivated, well meaning personnel are likely to end up in a place they shouldn't be, taking actions that may cause harm to themselves, civilians as well as responding firefighters. Hopefully Commissioner Bratton now understands that a police officer shouldn't be dispatched to confront a burning building anymore than a firefighter should be dispatched to confront a perp with a gun. Sadly, it is now time to mourn a deceased hero...

I understand the point you are attempting to make but I feel you are missing some major points. Nobody believes " wearing a uniform transforms you into something you are not". You are looking at it from the FD side and quite condescendingly at that. I'm sure they had no desire to " get in on the action" and were doing there job of protecting life and property which is very much " In the scope of their job description".
You made a statement that you always " stage away as requested by PD". How many times have you or a member of your department responded lights and sirens against the request of PD because that's not your "SOP"?
They where both housing officers so they did have elevator keys and most definitely knew how to use them.
You brought up " In the scope of their job description". This is the same forum that praises fireman for stopping a robbery or an assault in front of their house or while returning from a job. Where is your very literal definition of a " job description" then?
The bottom line is this is not the time or the place to Monday-morning quarterback someone's decision while they lay in critical condition in the hospital. I'm sure you truly wish them well and do hope they have a speedy recovery..but save the uninformed personal commentary to a later date.
Ps.. My panties are in a bunch and I'm not going to get over it

Today the City of New York went to social media to notify residents of a measles outbreak in upper Manhattan, the South Bronx and the Lower East Side and reminded residents to vaccinate their children starting at 12 months. Unfortunately in 1998, the Lancet, a British medical journal, published an article that claimed that the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine caused autism in children. The article has since been retracted, but the worry has remained. Today a large movement remains with non-vaccination of children coupled with a large undocumented, unvaccinated populations and these once nearly eradicated diseases are back on the rise. Are our EMS providers finding this spike only in larger urban areas or also in rural areas?

Before I start I need to say I do not condone, agree with or accept what the Chief did as acceptable or appropriate. With that said reading the article it appears that these comments occurred sometime in the past and were brought up as a part of some line of questioning by an attorney for a plaintiff against the district for not being hired. They were actually solicited from a party who had a conversation with the chief. It appears the Chief appologized both personally and publicly when he realized that these conversations caused personal harm. This should be left between the Chief and Finer. As far as the salary Fairview made it's own bed there. Nuff said. Again only my opinion based solely on the information in the article.

    The Last Alarm

My father was a fireman, he drove a big red truck
and when he'd go to work each day
he'd say, "Mother, wish me luck".

Then dad would not come home again, until sometime the next day.
But the thing that bothered me the most was
the things some folks would say.
"A fireman's life is easy. He eats and sleeps and plays,
and sometimes he won't fight a fire for many, many days."

When I first heard these words,
I was too young to understand.
But I knew when people had trouble
dad was there to lend a hand.

When my father went to work one day
and kissed us all good-bye, little did we realize
that night we would all cry.

My father lost his life that night, when the floor gave way below.
I wondered why he'd risked his life for someone he did not know.

But now I truly realize the greatest gift a man can give,
is to lay his life upon the line so
    someone else might live.

So as you go from day to day and pray to God above,
say a prayer for your local firemen.
He may save the ones you love!

Terribly sad news to hear. While I didn't know Kevin personally, I know he graduated from Peekskill High School in the same class as my eldest daughter. So that means he was still a young man. And I did know his father, Owen from my days as Board Chairman of the Peekskill Volunteer Ambulance Corps and as a Peekskill City Councilman. Now as a Fire Commissioner in Connecticut I can appreciate the hurt the Bristol Family and the Peekskill Fire Department are experiencing on the loss ot Kevin, since my department lost a veteran firefighter of similar age under similar circumstances just a few months ago. My sincerest condolences to the Bristol family, the Peekskill Fire Department and the entire Peekskill Community. May Kevin rest in Peace.

  24. PEMO3 liked a post in a topic by velcroMedic1987 in Crew Sizes on Ambulances
I've never understood the need to staff an ambulance like a clown car. A crew of 5 is just absurd. I've seen a driver, crew chief, EMT, attendant and designated clipboard carrier (all wearing gloves of course but that's another rant). Do you really need someone to just carry the clipboard? What kind of "training" or "experience" are you getting by doing that?

No ambulance is designed for that and it is just plain dangerous and inefficient.

If the crew chief is that uncomfortable with his/her skills, don't be crew chief. Don't fill the ambulance with a pep squad.
Ideal crew size for an EMS call is 2-3. 90% of calls only need one EMT and for the other 10% a second set of hands in the back is nice to have but three sets of hands will just get in the way.
PS - It's not the BLS crews job to drive the ALS fly-car to the hospital so don't say you brought a valet for that reason. And don't drive to the hospital lights and siren with the fly-car but that is also another topic.
