Firefighter's marriage proposal stirs controversy in Lake George

11 posts in this topic

Supervisor Montesi acknowledged the town has used volunteer fire trucks for non-emergency calls: bringing Santa Claus to Town Hall for the annual tree-lighting ceremony, escorting the Queensbury High School football team home from winning a state championship.

He said those situations differ from the marriage proposal because they are "public uses" of the equipment and personnel. Montesi said it’s possible the town will review the issue of "personal" uses, though he admitted it’s a sensitive subject.

This is the same Lake George that invites fire trucks from all over the state of NY to flock to their town for a parade?

Please!!! Gimme a break. I'm sure there are much more pressing issues in West Glen Falls and Queensbury to worry about. Congrats to the couple and kudos for the novel proposal idea...wish I thought of it.

Not to throw gasoline on the proverbial fire, but how is the Fire Department set up? Wouldn't a Fire District who provides service to a Town be the Governing Entity in this? What authority other than an maybe an opinion does the Town Supervisor hold over the Fire District?

While all intentions here were genuine and good, I would be nervous about what would happen if lawyers were unleashed on a case like this, we have a litigious society. Just my .02

It does not appear that they have fire districts.

The town website lists 5 fire companies (all with both line officers and executive officers), thus it is most likely that they are fire protection districts contracted to the town.

The real story is they evacuated a store. And the secondary story is the use of emergency lights for a nonemergency (MVA liability).

Not to have future questional judgement they should review their bylaws & SOPS, check with their lawyer and make changes as needed. Good luck & best wishes on the marriage.

I am guessing that Santa will be walking to the Town Hall this year. Don't want anyone to accuse them of using the emergency lights for a non-emergency.
