There are plenty of 65 year olds who could run lots of 20 year olds into the ground, when it comes to physical fitness. Just sayin'.....

It's my understanding from articles I've read that the Council on Islamic Relations (CAIR) is miffed because some items hint that we were attacked by radical Muslims on 9/11.....when everyone knows that it was actually Norwegian fishermen.

For about 6 years our ordinances have required residential sprinklers in all new one and two family dwellings (in line with the IRC, IBC and NFPA 101). About four years ago the City Council sought to have some exceptions making it easier to build in the area covered by the municipal water system. Since then, we added an exception that requires some caveats. One of these is that no lightweight building material are used as primary structural components. The one we've gotten some push back on, directly from the industry, was not allowing engineered beams like Glu-lams, Micro-lams, etc. They seem to understand the dangers of wooden I Beams, but still argue the glue in the full dimensional engineer beams is "safe". We ask for proof, they never have any, so it currently stands as is, but the reps from one of the large manufacturers keeps calling us every few months to argue this point. Nonetheless, until we seem proof their glue and particle board stands up to heat while under a load, I'm convinced these should be protected by sprinklers. We do allow them as small window and door headers where the floor load is not depending on them.

I think the real question is can the NYPD survive when Bratton resigns and DeBlasio appoints some other member of his progressive left wing liberal party to run the world greatest PD. Bratton has been associated as a cops commissioner and most likely won't continue to be associated with a boss who has tied his hands.

Looks great - bit of trivia = that front compartment closest to the turntable was originally mounted over the rear wheel of the trailer - the tiller drivers said it interfered with their line of site when turning - so the shop unbolted them and moved them forward - thats why it kind of looks out of place - because it is! lol

Every now and then, I can snatch an hour or two to work on something. Other times, if I have no distractions. I might spend the better part of a day. I don't think 200 hours would be an unrealistic estimate.

I had to start the cabinets all over again. The completed assembly was too short. This time, I used .005 styrene overlaid on .02 ABS, then sanded it out. I want this rig to look "beat up" rather than factory fresh, and I remember the real one was practically falling apart by the time it was retired. It, and its two sisters, were worked very hard during a time when Yonkers was broke.
Anyway, I made a lot of headway on the trailer. The tillermans's gondola needs some work, these rigs had open ground ladder cribs rather than the continuous deck on the Code 3 version.

There are quite a few pictures of to real 70, 73, and 74 tillers in the "Protection from the past" section; most taken by JJPinto.

Started the trailer modifications. VERY difficult disassembly, and I still haven't figured out how to detach the ladder and turntable.

Once I stripped it down to the base plate, I used a Dremel to grind it back about 1/16" on each side so that the new side panels for the compartments will be flush with the existing fenders.

Next, I measured for the length of the high side compartments, leaving a space behind the front fender, which is where the rear hydraulic outriggers wold retract into, did some arithmetic, and marked out the panels. I used .02 ABS sheet for a base layer, and .01 ABS on top of that for the panel doors. Then I ran a strip of DP between the uppers and lowers. Each compartment was a separate unit on the actual truck, so I scribed a deep line between each section. Later, after it's painted, I will use a black wash to highlight the low spots.

Coming along nicely. Next step is to break down the trailer and put in the compartments.
That crappy Code 3 was good for something after all.

Just yesterday on the Taconic, I passed a guy taking a long pull on his beer (a Corona, I think) while cruising along at 50+. I wonder if he had his cell phone on, too?

I have advice.......Just pay the ticket, it's one of the cheapest tickets. It's probably like a 25-50 dollar ticket plus whatever the court fee is.

I was not at this fire but I remember it and I know these buildings pretty well although I haven't been in them since I made Chief 8 years ago, so some of these details may be foggy. This is a u-shaped complex of 5 or 6 story ordinary constructed apartments with a large courtyard. They are set back from the street and almost a full story above grade. At one time these buildings must have been very beautiful. It has some ornate features like large lobby's and hallways with marble, cast iron decoration in places, and larger than normal apartments, but they have deteriorated over the years. There is a standpipe but it is a Class 2 with only inch and a half connections- intended for occupant use only. The cockloft is open throughout the entire complex as far as I know. I believe also that the roof is a "rain roof" or "inverted roof". Depending on which apartment(s) hose is being stretched to it would be anywhere from a 7 to maybe as much as a 15 length stretch I would estimate.
AC Bill Webster (deceased) had this fire as the first due Battalion Chief. He was a very experienced and knowledgeable Chief and I knew him well. He was very happy with the outcome of the firefighting efforts. I don't remember which line of apartments this came in as but the fire had run the dumbwaiter from the basement to the cockloft prior to FD arrival. A long stretch of 2 and a half or maybe 3 and a half was made and connected to a water thief which fed 1 3/4" attack lines. Some companies went in from Groshon St. - a dead end on the south side of the building which was a good move. Holes were made over the fire and a succesful trench cut was made- this is quite rare. I think, but am not sure, that the fire was held to just one of the attached buildings, maybe 10 or so apartments? (the addresses are 100-110 I think? 6 separate buildings?) Someone on this forum from YFD from 303, 306, 304, 71 or 74 will know for certain I can't remember.I don't know if this fire was incendiary as you mentioned. There may have been rescues,- I do remember being told it was very hectic right from the get go and all involved were pleasantly surprised at the stop they were able to make.

I just re-read your original post. These buildings are definitely not fireproof. Actually, that term is a misnomer, despite its use by FDNY. However, using that term as it is used by FDNY, these buildings would not qualify.

The complex is a regular customer, we were just there today. The story on the job Chief Flynn posted is pretty much the story, it went to a 4th or 5th Alarm. I didn't work that nite, but ended up there on recall. Picked up frozen hose for 5-hours.
