Building was marked dangerous by the Capt of Engine 75. The bodies were found in a collapsed area that was not able to be searched because of the building being unstable. No one made any mistakes in the FDNY if anyone is to blame it is DOB or HPD for failing to maintain the security of the building.

Not to sway from the OP's original purpose of this thread, but lol; glad you brought up Safe-IR. I literally just got home from the 2nd day of their TIC training. It was a two day course comprised of 1 full day of classroom and camera familiarization and 1 full day of practical evolution's at the FTC.
Bob Athanas from R3 was our instructor and he was excellent in every aspect.
I'd highly recommend anyone to contact them and look into the course. It truly opened my eyes and made me think outside of the box when it comes to TIC applications.

My job tried it for a day. Mixed reviews, E-One is new to us, so nobody knew what to expect. . It turned like our pumpers, and we had no trouble setting it up on streets where we frequently have to shortjack now. A few of the concerns were the inability to set up on hills that we can now, ( the bubble gauge has either green or red, no in-between) and the vertical stack wouldn't work for our exhaust vent system, unless we converted our reserve rig somehow to match Set-up time was maybe a little slower than our ALF/LTI light duty aerial. The cab was OK, however, there were concerns about the huge hump that was present to accomodate the AC unit and low profile roof. You couldn't see out the front of the truck or communicate with the Company officer from the back seats, unless you bent way down. Likewise, the company officer couldn't see the fireman in the backseat for the same reason. We currently use ALF/LTI aerials

Can't say anything about the work from the pictures. They're just the apparatus. No shots of anyone really doing anything.

    What defines a working fire?
When members of the department show up who you haven't seen in months for training, meetings, etc. and they are the first ones on the rigs and there throwing didicated members off. That's when you know it a working fire.

Its not the same outside of NYC. Guy I was carpooling with stopped at firehouse I believe in greenburgh, it was off 119 about a block in on the right side of the street. We asked if it would be ok to leave a car there as we both were driving to work together. What were we told? Ask the chief?! Ask the Chief? We were parking a hyundai or an infiniti not a motorhome 24/7. Ironically, went to Greenburgh PD, were told by a sgt there, NO PROBLEM, if you have any issues come inside. We had a guy who was on his Harley stop at firehouse who rode in from Cali for 9/11. He wanted to obviously go downtown, we insisted he leave bike in quarters as we couldn't guarantee parking or safety of the bike downtown, smaller firehouses etc. He was extremely grateful. I was taught you always treat anyone who isn't assigned to your firehouse as a guest, the mechanic, the radio repairman, even the exterminator all given the offer of coffee something to eat, some heat or ac, anything so when he remembers YOUR firehouse he says those guys are great!

No matter how many times the topic of provision of FAST is discussed in these forums, I still see many who seem to believe that FAST must be provided by a special 'team' (like haz mat, tech rescue or fire investigation). Like it or not, FAST is part of every firefighter's duties. Any engine, truck, rescue company or squad must be fully capable of being assigned as the FAST when arriving at an incident and functioning in that role should a firefighter get into trouble and require immediate assistance. This training should be part of the process of becoming certified as a firefighter.

Whats next non multiple line engine companies or truck companies that are not pitched roof qualified.FAST is for our protection, US, if your not trained in it then well i find it hard to call you a firefighter.

"The end result is you have people who are too afraid to talk with each other look at each other or even engage in friendly banter because something might be taken the wrong way. In my opinion this actually makes for a more hostile work environment as it erodes the camaraderie that has been a hallmark of the emergency services forever."
I agree word for word...just want to add it also gives some in charge that have vendettas against certain people some leverage.

I guess you never let your hands slip from the 10 and 2 positions on the steering wheel and never look over at the car next to you to see if that head of blond hair is a babe or a boar. Oops did you just change the radio station or reach for a coffee cup? That must have caused a horrible crash!
Your condemnation of the police in this effort is off base and undeserved. The cops can drive and look into the car next to them without crashing. I don't think you're going to see any more accidents involving cops because of this.
As for the vehicles, state bid vehicles are way less than 40K. The fact that they're different from regular marked Tahoes was the pitch to the media to get them interested. Really not that big a deal.
People don't pay attention to anything so they're not going to see these Tahoes or marked vehicles or a line of flares or that red light. Drivers suck!

I'll put it this way. We need a 2.5 hose worth of training dollars to flow so instructors can get paid to teach MORE classes, but we are getting a booster line's worth. The state runs the pump panel......

Thats because 1) we cant let the other depts have a "better" or more expensive toy than we have. 2) No one in the dept is willing to or physically fit enough to climb a straight ladder.
I like when depts. buy a tower that can not drive to the majority of its district because of weight and the rest of the district has tight driveways that prevent turning in and set up. But as long as our toy is as big as everyone else its ok (even if we cant staff it).

    Yes, without a doubt!
  22. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by Dinosaur in FAS Team Thought
Sorry, I have to disagree with you. What happens when your "drivers" or "exterior guys' who "don't want to or cannot be interior firefighters" are outside a building and one of the "interior" firefighters calls a mayday? My theory is that one of three things will happen:
    1. They will attempt a rescue without the proper training, equipment, or experience and become victims themselves, or
    2. They will stand-by while additional "firefighters" respond to perform the rescue and precious time is lost, or
    3. The cops will attempt the rescue and that thread has already run its course. (If you can't tell, this is sarcasm and you should only respond to points 1 or 2).
As long as there is no clear standard for firefighter, we are going to have these arguments and the rift between trained (career or volunteer) and untrained (only volunteer because NYS law requires career FF to be fully-qualified interior trained) is going to exist.
Just out of curiosity, does a driver or an "exterior only 'firefighter'" get the same LOSAP benefits as the guy who straps on a pack and crawls down that smoke filled hallway?
  23. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by Dinosaur in FAS Team Thought
The logical solution is to train all firefighters the same, including RIT/FAST. The logical solution is to have only one training standard for all firefighters. "But we're volunteers and that's too much time" or "I have a job and a family, I don't have time for all that training" or "you have to appreciate us. we do this for free".
Only we can stop this stupid BS and create a mandate for training. A single standard everywhere including RIT/FAST.
We are only endangering ourselves with these stupid petty arguments. We are either firefighters or we are not! All the t-shirts or license plates, or flashing lights in the world aren't going to save someone's life if it goes bad. And it goes bad in a heartbeat! We can't afford to treat RIT/FAST as a unique specialty and call for teams from other counties when we have a fire. Every firefighter should be interior. There shouldn't be "exterior" or "support" guys called FF anymore. Do the whole job, not the parts you like or the parts that are convenient!
Stand up and be a firefighter already!
  24. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Fining for Excessive False Alarms
1st we need to define a false alarm. If Mrs. Smith is cooking and burns somehing, the smoke sets of the smoke detector. We made it law that she has a smoke detector and that it will trigger an alarm. If its connected to a central station (which is sometimes required) it will notify the FD.
As much as we may not like it, this is not a false alarm. It performed exactly as designed and required by code.
I agree that in some cases they should be fined, but if you fine them enough they may just disconnect them and that was never the goal. How can you force them to disconnect a fire alarm, when in many cases it is required by code.
  25. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by helicopper in Volunteer group in Texas moves to ban mandatory training
One of the funadmental problems with this argument is that nobody is saying there should be career departments instead of volunteer departments. The argument as I see it is that there should be just one standard for training for firefighter. If you're a volunteer and can't take it full-time during the week that's OK but you should still have to meet the same training objectives as a career guy to be designated a firefighter.
The problem with your statement above is that there is no guarantee that you're getting a qualfied and trained FF in many volunteer departments. However a career department is obligated to follow the mandated training so you are getting a qualified and trained firefighter. Now, before anyone reads this as a smack to the vollie side, there there are plenty of properly trained guys on the volunteer side. But you can't say, with any degree of certainty, that they'll be the ones showing up at your fire.
One training standard impiemented statewide (like they are for cop and EMT and paramedic) would go a long way to bridge this philosopical divide between career and volunteer firefighters.
    Here endeth the rant.
