This morning, JFLYNN, along with several other members of this site, participated in this event. Thank you for helping those that served see the memorial in DC and honor those that didn't come home with them.
If you participated, feel free to chime in on your experience.

I think that before you take to the keyboard you should get the facts. You make quite a serious allegation of your department being influenced by an outside source, do you know this to be true? Question these types of things in house before going to the all mighty internet.
Now as far as the policy, good job! They are kids in school. Schooling is required for a job, a job is required to feed a family. I don't think my volunteer department had ever bought dinner for my kids.

Because our culture demands that it must be someone else's fault. Nobody takes responsibility for anything and we should not expect the parents or guardians to take responsibility for the fire or the lack of warning. It must be someone else's fault.

Really sad about the kids, however since the word lawsuit has now been mentioned due to response delays maybe its time for the responsible parties to be charged for not having working smoke detectors. Easy to sue the city and blame EMS for there issues but what about those that dont follow law in regards to smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. City will hand out money to settle this and those kids will never be back, a shame that the parents will "profit" from this loss.

    Congratulations Mr. Harvey!
This award could not have found a harder working or more conciencous care giver to belong to.
Dick is a a bonafide shite magnet, having worked many of the toughest calls around- the 3 Yonkers firemen out the window comes to mind but that is just one. He did another major MVA that same night that never made any headlines. Still working Yonkers, still pulling OT, carrying gear up and people down and still doing all that with that heavy medicare card in his wallet
My hat is truly off to You, Brother Harvey.
(Unfortunately, Dick is even less tech saavy than I, so he will likely not see this unless someone shows him.)

More deflection. I guess the chief placed the temporary ban on drinking in the firehouse because he was drinking somewhere else. Maybe if we find out he was only drinking hard alcohol we could ban that but allow beer.

typical volunteer bullshit. hill billys need their beer and liquor in the firehouse. They give THEMSELVES a bad rap. Maybe they should attempt to uphold themselves to career standards. Bash me all you want. Marks my words. this wont be the last time we see this.

How about etiquette in general? How many parades have you been to where you see guys in uniform with their shirt untucked, tie falling off, hat all crooked, drinking beer? And some ff's wonder why the publics perseption isn't always favorable. Ever see military personnel look like that? Nope, because there is respect for the uniform and what it stands for.

I, along with 25 of my Brothers spent 2 days paying our respect to Lt Walsh and FF Kennedy. I have to tell you that there needs to be a class on proper etiquette taught to the younger generation of firefighters. I can't tell you how many members I saw carrying cases of beer on their shoulders walking the streets where our Brother was being celebrated. Guys just walking by the church with 24 on their shoulder. I don't really know if they were career or volley and don't really care who they are affiliated with but their actions disgusted me as well as other New Rochelle Firefighters. If you want to have a few beers between the service and the last drive past the sea of blue please go to a bar. If you want to tailgate and party in front of the civilians like morons please go to a football or baseball game. In front of the church and on peoples lawns is not the place!!!!

Without going into the details of this incident, a number of items should be re-evaluated in many depts. based on this incident.
It is very easy for a routine incident to go bad very quickly.
Many depts. do not have adequate trained interior firefighters both operating AND in staging (to be available when things go bad).
FAST teams in many cases are only capable of dealing with 1 or 2 firefighter maydays, what's your back up plan?
Lucky in this case, we will not be learning the lessons from a NIOSH report, but this will happen again here or some other community, lets look into how we prevent a tragedy in the future.
  15. 99subi liked a post in a topic by Westchester in Heroin- will we ever get it off the street
I'm sorry to say but there is no real answer for emergency responders to say. Drugs will always be there and it's not out job to prevent others who want to harm themseleves with this killer. Between social media and rave parties there is no end in sight. Peer pressure is higher than ever, drugs are cheap to buy, and as we all know how additive with one hit it can be. Do we blame the parents? Do we blame locaton? Ho about friends or relatives that are additive? I don't care if you live in the lower class areas or upscale areas Heroin or other narcartics are everywhere. It's up to goverment to make stricter policies so when law enforcement makes arrests of users, sellers, DUIs that the court system give s them a slap on the wrist. Heroin has been around during WW2, and will never leave. It some one wants to kill themselves, so be it !

Years ago, I started switching, as did thousands of others, to energy star rated appliances, cfl's /leds, and water saving devices. The electric company soon realized that all this saving by the people was hurting their bottom line. So as people use less electricity, rates go up. All the switching didn't save me a thing as I now pay more to use less.
Add in the hundreds of jobs lost in the US because of this as manufacturers closed plants and the mercury laden cfls creating new types pollution sources and problems.
Additionally, while using less energy to operate, cfl and led bulbs, when compared to incandescent bulbs, use more energy, precious and toxic metals to produce. The bulbs are also EPA classified as hazardous waste.
How many homeowners are hanging on to their burned out cfl or led waiting for the annual county hazardous waste collection (Which costs them money and time)?
    Give me my Edison back.

Check with Westchester County personnel dep't for any upcoming fire fighter test that covers paid dep'ts in the towns and villages.
The cities of Mt. Vernon, Yonkers, White Plains hold their own test. Chances of getting hired in one of these cities are slim to none unless you are a resident.

Doesn't say anything about leaving work. IMO the mayor is right.

He is their boss, he is ultimately responsible for the work they get PAID to do. They have a JOB to do, and that comes before volunteering at an organization. I can't tell my private employer that I want to be paid to go fight fires. That would be considered walking out of your JOB.
I mean hell, if people are going to go on calls while on the clock for the town, why not just PAY them to BE FIREFIGHTERS, not water/highway/parks workers.
