If anyone knows of a dept who wants to buy a good quality, well maintained and plenty of service life still left rigs, my district has 2 of them for sale 1987 Hahn (Marlboro E 38-20) 500 gal water, 1500 GPM pump (totally stripped of equipment except ground ladders) and a 1982 Stuphen, (Marlboro E 38-30) 1000 gal water, 1500 GPM pump. The Stuphen has 2000 feet of 4 inch, and a bunch of loose equipment including ground ladders. E 38-20 was our first out until we got our new engine a few months ago. E 38-30 is still a front line piece.
PM me for more details. We cant find buyers anywhere, and we're not asking big $$$. I'd love to see them go to a good home. We'll even take yearly payments from a dept if all they can afford is a few thousand a year. No kidding, we've done it before.

Im not "comfortable" with that statement, but it is a fact. As a FF, there are some fires you just cant go into because they are too hot to go save those who are trapped. It happens. Do we feel OK, about it, no.
Part of the problem here is LE agencies have different tactics on how they respond and react, and discussing them in open forum is not going to happen due to OPSEC. All agencies that con repsond to an event need to meet, talk about the plan and work together.

Years ago, Camp Smith had it's own Fire Dept. They used Ex-FDNY apparatus.

In my neck of the woods and surrounding area, turnout gear is kept the fire station. There is no going direct to the scene unless you are a Chief officer or fire police. Everyone goes to the station, gears up, and the trucks roll. For mutual aid, same thing applies. If we are going mutual aid your getting there via the Big Red Truck, no POV's. It makes accountability easier, the officer on the truck knows who on his crew with what skills/certs is onboard, and can think about individual assignments enroute, under guidance from the mutual aid IC (or our chief if he is there before the truck whch often happens), who is standing right next to the mutual aid IC, asking what the apparatus/crew assignment is. There is no freelancing. You were called for a specific assignment, you will perform said assignment and when complete, you will inform the IC and await futher orders. Nothing more, nothing less.
I think keeping gear at the station keeps the fire dept member from A town going to B towns call (when not called by mutual aid) with the "I was in the area and saw you guys had a call so here I am to help" type of instances because he has no gear, and therefore no reason to be on the fireground. It may not work for all, but it works for us.

I happen to be a Fire Commissioner, who as you can see from my profile, is a female, and NEVER been a MEMBER of the Fire Department, much less a Chief. Two of my fellow Commissioners were Chiefs, the other two were never even Officers, one of which was an FDNY Lieutenant. Needless to say, as you can see, it is a fairly good balance.
By the way, I am up for re-election on Tuesday, and I would WELCOME a challenge!!!

I have seen several depts begging for info/help finding their "old" apparatus that was sold off many years ago at musters and on the SPAAMFAA website. If your dept has any interest in getting this one back, now is the time. Funds may not be availible to resto it now, but atleast of you get possession of it, you can resto it when you decide to, even if it is years from now. Hoping to find it and buy it when the funds are availible may lead you on a fruitless search, and a whole bunch of "we should of bought it back then"

NWFDMedic hit it right on the head. All you need is some well meaning probie to take a picture of an extrication call that shows the patients, he posts it on his facebook and then a lawyer finds out, and here you go Mr Commissioner, your HIPAA lawsuit. All because a probie that hasnt been in your dept more than 6 months wanted to be the cool guy showing off to his firends that he was at the scene of the "big one" and is now costing you thousands in legal fees.
A smart policy is in order. The internet is a great tool to be used in information sharing, but some people dont know what is OK to share and whats not. Educate them, enact smart policies and keep them up to date.
Stifling is not good, but "post whatever you want" is not good either. Find a happy meduim, make a policy, and make sure people understand it.
I dont think any of us want this in our depts, nor would we want to be the parents. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/10/19/earlyshow/main6971385.shtml

One person is not "in charge" of the board. Even if one "bad apple" gets elected by the voters of the district, he still only has 20% of the vote.(assuming there are 5 commissioners on the board) He would need to get 2 others to agree with whatever motion he/she makes before it can pass.
The fire dept does not "control" who gets elected. The voters of the district do.
If someone wants to check on the laws of Fire Districts, I'd suggest they buy the following book.
    http://www.jamespublishing.com/books/nyfd.htm
It is updated yearly with all the newly added/changed laws. The book takes all the laws and breaks them down into easily understood language, includes dates that legal notices need to be in by, other important dates, ect. In my opinion, every commissioner should have one, as well as anyone who really wants to know what the laws are in an understandable format.
The NYS Association of Fire Districts is a wealth of knowledge also, and the fall meeting is coming up at the end of this month in Ellenville. Should be an informative time as it has been in the past. Last meeting's Key Note speaker was Chief Billy Goldfeder. I also belive that all commissioners (or atleast one representative from each District) should attend these meetings. New laws and changes are discussed, topics relating to legal, budget, audits, GML, and other such matters as well as an attorneys panel where you can ask any question you have. If your district is not a member of the association, or your district is and their rep isnt going, I'd ask why.

Good show. but it was disheartening to see lines of people at the booths that sold nothing but "cool guy T shirts", but no one at the free cholesterol screening/health wellness booth or booths that were selling training manuals.
I did talk to Spotted Dog about their ROVER system at length, I think it is much better than I Am Responding. IAR was the first to market with a response system, but Spotted Dog perfected it. I sense a change coming in my fire station.

How is it decided who Im responding for when doing the "POV response"? Just another question that will need to be addressed and agreed to by both parties if something like this happens.

Just a question... Say Im a member of the SVFD. I now join the SVAC. Im now a member of both. A call comes in for both fire and EMS needed. How does the IC even know who Im "working for" when I get to the scene in my POV? Who's my IC I take orders from at the scene, Fire or EMS? Who covers me for insurance if I get hurt going to/at/coming back from a call? As a member of both, it could be confusing.
Just trying to understand how this might all work down at the worker bee level.
