FD and EMS. EMS to evaluate the clear/transport the patient. FD for the extra hands. PD too if they are having a slow day and they feel like it...
These can be generally simple with an extreme potential to go south quicker than anyone would like.

Okay, but not everyone has the luxury of affording a full time care giver or nursing home.

So.... We should leave the elderly woman who's incapacitated on her bedroom floor there to rot? Where do you volley/work? I want to make sure I don't have family that lives there.

Wrong. You pay taxes for State Troopers to protect lives and property. The old "my taxes pay your salary" argument is bull and you know it. You don't get to tell them what they do on a daily basis.
Its funny, everyone criticizes NYSP for not cooperating at accident scenes (and I don't agree with their policies on that issue) but when these particular Troopers cooperate as requested by the senior officer on a fire scene they're still wrong...
Do these grapes taste funny to you???

Sorry, I couldn't resist the urge to provide another example of a Brother helping people in need outside his field of expertise... Right place, right time.
Seriously though, Officer Connors is a great guy and definitely not the first Danbury Officer to receive an award for an action such as this. I take comfort knowing none of the negative comments written on this thread will ever change the mind of a Police Officer faced with a situation like this.

I know that at least two of the pictured Troopers are FFs, one of them Chief of a neighboring department. Not their first rodeo.
I am a proud union Fireman, and I have had a Trooper operate a line while I made a search.
Many of our organizations could take lessons on professionalism from the NYSP.

Would you care to elaborate on your comment? Do you have information to support this allegation or is it just speculation?
According to the story, the fire chief asked for assistance. Why would there be an issue if that's the case?

This weekend, at the schoolhouse at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, the United States Military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community will gather for it's annual Ball and Memorial. It is a time to renew friendships and to remember our fallen warriors, whether it be recent or in the distant past. The Technicians names being added to the wall this year are listed below, 18 heroes who gave their lives while protecting their fellow teammates and the units they were assigned to.
Unfortunately I will not be attending this year, but want to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. The EOD motto is "Initial Success or Total Failure", but to those of us who earned the Crab at the school we declare, "We Remember"…

If you were a firefighter enroute back to the firehouse on an Engine, and saw a cop getting the crap beat out of him during a "routine" traffic stop, you wouldn't try to help?
And who do we have to hide behind when we stage? The PD officers who go into a possibly very dangerous scene to make sure it is safe for us do do our jobs.
And if something gosh forbid was to happen to them while they were securing the scene for us, we'd be first in to give the emergency medical care.

No matter what anyone says, the IC made a COMMAND DECISION, and utilized whatever resources he had available at the time. What would be the difference between setting up a master stream and leaving it flowing unattended, versus putting those fine gentlemen in charge of a hoseline (aside from the fact that a master stream shouldn't be left unattended)?
I applaud the IC recognizing that help was needed and seeking the assistance, and even more, thumbs up to the Purple Ties for rising to the task. They very easily could have said "not my job" and gone and secured a perimeter/the scene (not a knock on LEO's).
I have been on many scenes that the PD assisted with fire operations, none were ever freelancing, and everyone forgets....
WE ARE ALL OUT THERE FOR ONE PURPOSE!!! TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE PUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So long as that gets done, in a controlled manner, and everyone goes home safe, everyone should take a chill pill, and re-focus and worry about the problems they/their own department has, before throwing out s*** about what others do.

Bottom line here is that this was something that they were asked to do. It is obviously a rual volunteer department. As we all know, there are manpower issues that we all have to deal with. They did not take the hose out of anyones hands and I am sure they were directed as to where and how the IC wanted that hose stream directed. We are all here for the same reasons, to serve the public we were sworn to protect. Take help were you can when you need it. I am sure that as soon as there was adequate manpower the police officer's were relieved. I think it was even changed to a monitor unless I am looking at the wrong picture. Would we all rather have firefighters manning the line? Sure, but if you don't have anyone, I will take the help from the PD.

    Yes Sir, that was me.
A few years back my department went mutual aid for a house fire with our Truck. I lived between the fire and the firehouse, so I drove directly to the scene where I was paired up with a good friend from another department to do a search as there were reports of a trapped civillian. The house was "going good" with heavy fire on floor 1, side 4.
As we walked up to the front step, the TROOPERS and another firefighter pulled the victim from the house, he was right behind the front door. Since we thought there was another victim inside, we pushed into the front door. My partner was already inside and I was a few feet inside when the fire rolled out the front door. Fire was to the right, we went left...the fire blocked our exit if need be...the TROOPER took the line that was on the front steps (unattended) and knocked back the fire in the doorway, holding it in check until we completed the primary of the room thought to hold another victim. We then took the kine and attacked the fire.
We know it wasnt an ideal situation, but thats the reality of rural firefighting....I was thankful for them.

And yet everyone (including myself) applauded members of the FDNY for backing up and assisting NYPD officers in Staten Island who were faced with a large unruly crowd.
Who's guarding the hen house? The other Troopers working. Those Troopers most likely would have been assigned to the fire scene anyways.
If a Firefighter taking one of my guns to help me in a firefight saves my ass or someone else's, I'm good with it. These Troopers didn't take the hose from anyone's hands, they were asked by the Fire Chief to help. Any cop would have stepped up and did the right thing.
The simple fact is web the crap hits the fan, emergency service providers step up and do the right thing for the communities we serve and for our fellow emergency service providers. These Troopers were not tasked with an interior attack, they were tasked with spraying some water on a fire from well outside the structure because the FD didn't have the manpower. If I was a homeowner, I'd be pretty damn grateful.

  19. sueg liked a post in a topic by SageVigiles in False alarms douse firefighter morale; Nyack says nearly half of calls are not real
If you joined the FD looking to run nothing but working jobs, you've been duped.
I agree with the previous post that Dinosaur referenced. False alarms are a great opportunity to learn your district and the nuances of difference occupancies. If you keep responding to the same place, you can drill into everyone's head where to place apparatus, where the fire alarm control center is located, where your primary and secondary water supply is, etc.
I do agree with the idea of charging for excessive false alarms within a certain time frame, but not because it "damages morale." How about because it wastes fuel and other department resources. What if the cops said "we think going on false burglary alarms damages morale so we don't want to do them anymore." We'd all say how selfish and unprofessional it was.
  20. sueg liked a post in a topic by BFD1054 in False alarms douse firefighter morale; Nyack says nearly half of calls are not real
    Umm, why is this news?
Maybe i am wrong, but arent we hear to respond to alarms? Yes, a high percentage of alarms are false, so what? Smells and bells and in many places EMS runs, make up a large percentage of responses. But again, this is why we are here, no?
There is a reason the alarm went off, this is why we need to respond and investigate. If we find it was "food on the stove" or dust or what have you, so be it.
What is the alternative? Send a PD unit or just a Chief to "check and advise?" Like the boy who cried wolf, there will be the 1 time its an active fire and you'll be caught with your pants down.
Im sorry if you get annoyed at false alarms, but its part of the "job." You dont like it, go join a slower department i guess.
Personally, i dont see how false alarms really can bring down morale. Maybe guys are getting burned out on these runs and if so, suck it up!
I look at it this way; every and any alarm that i respond to is a learning experience. Its a chance to gear-up and get out there and practice all the basics.
So what if only 1 in a 1,000 alarms are the "real thing." It will be that 1 time that counts.
    Just my worthless 2 cents.

The attack and immediate aftermath were in the papers, because I read about it either in the NY Daily News or, more likely, USA Today a day or two later. I hope Mr. Strait is recovering from his physical injuries, although the emotional scars may never heal. We thank him for his service, grieve his loss, and hope he and his family can find comfort in knowing that people do care, and hope those non-human cretins are brought to full punishment.

Hours I don't mind, I like popping on to see who had jobs that day or overnight. Days however I agree with you, unless its "the big one" or has some kind of special circumstance I could care less who had a room and contents job 3 days ago.
