I did not want to interrupt the existing Carmel Structure Fire Discussion topic which is becoming more of an online condolence thread, however I'm curious and I understand the incident investigation is ongoing, but were there not any working smoke detectors in this house?
Could this be yet another multi-fatality incident where the loss of life might have been preventable?

Unbelievable. Frankly I'm surprised the 101st Alumni hasn't invaded Tulsa yet. But I can dream.
Thank God Oklahoma still has the death penalty.

The attack and immediate aftermath were in the papers, because I read about it either in the NY Daily News or, more likely, USA Today a day or two later. I hope Mr. Strait is recovering from his physical injuries, although the emotional scars may never heal. We thank him for his service, grieve his loss, and hope he and his family can find comfort in knowing that people do care, and hope those non-human cretins are brought to full punishment.

If I haven't forgotten, does NYC still leave "dead" hydrants in their place? And who actually maintains and tests them, I've never really thought about that?
]They should. A Fire hydrant should be such, whether active or inactive. That way, the citizen can't claim he thought it was an out of service hydrant when he parked in front of it.

My department is trying this new thing where if a Hydrant is OOS we will ban fires of all types (brush, structure, vehicle, ect...) within a 1,000' radius of that hydrant. .....So far so good!

The u.s. justice dept should be ashamed of themselves. We are talking about a position where lives and property are at stake. We all know the smartest officers are not always the best leaders but ill take chances then with someone who was given the job. Lets face it, not everyone can get into law school or med school. And the same should hold true for the career side of the fire service.

I truly mean no offense to anyone, but do any people in these minorities feel like the people "trying to protect them" are using a very racial argument? Over and over they state that many minorities cannot be held to the same written exam scores as if these people have a physical or mental issue that will not allow them to score higher?
How does this reflect on those that do score well? Are they statistical outlyers? Do the scores/ethnic lines reflect similarly in high school testing, ASVAB or SATs? It appears the argument brought by the DOJ is that some minorities are less intellectually inclined, so we have to capitalize on their other strengths, even when we understand that with promotion comes greater need for intellectual knowledge.
