    Spartan, a period or a comma won't kill ya
    Listen, traditions and the past are not lost. You're too young to be so jaded. Look up, the future's brighter than you think. You know what else they told me when I got on the job? "This is a great job, but it ain't what it used to be". Well, they told my grandfather the same thing in 1951. That's a silly line of crap that doesn't need to be true. This job is great and can continue to be great if we want it to be. We can all make little adjustments without ruining the purity of our jobs and the relationships we have there.

    Amen. This was true in my service career that began in the early 80's. I've been with a PD now for ten years and I'm fortunate that it's not a crazy politically correct organization. However, I caution everyone to be careful and think before they speak. The good old days are over. NFD2004, I feel your pain. And for the new guys, as stated by someone earlier, never let them know what really gets to you. Once they figure that out your dead meat. It's all good.

    Depends, how thin is that person's skin...
    Nothing is sacred at the kitchen table.
    All kidding aside, you can't put your finger on one topic or another as being over the line. Somehow, it's all in how it's delivered. Some are just nice guys, good buddies and TERRIFIC ball busters. No matter what the topic, you don't mind being in their barrel. Other guys might just rub someone the wrong way. When you work in a firehouse with a lot of different personalities, there are bound to be some you don't like. If I have a touchy relationship with a guy, I'm not going to break his balls. He's not going to take it and odds are, I don't care enough to want to engage him. Someone you have a great re pore with, that's another story. The best guys to see "go at it", breaking chops and such, are the two who are terrific friends.
    There's a lot of truth to what they tell probies as they come through the door, "if they're breaking your balls kid, it's cause they like ya".

    "calhobs", I certainly didn't feel at all that you were singling me out. Not at all there guy. (got the pm too).
    I guess you can go back there a few years yourself. Me too. It was a competely different time. Not to get too off track here, but there just wasn't a term called "politically correct". We never heard of a thing called "Road Rage". In school we got in trouble for chewing gum, not for carrying a gun. We all went to the neighborhood school and nobody had to be bused from one side of the city to the other. Armed police officers or security guards didn't have to walk the school hallways. In most cities we left our doors Unlocked and didn't need security bars on the windows. These are just a few of the dozens of changes that occurred over the years along with "busting chops' as we once knew it.
    So do most people think we've made successful progress over the years since we all now have a pretty good understanding of what we can say or not say. It seems at least to me that things like "Road Rage", "Home Invasions",or "School Shootings" are much more of a serious problem today than "busting chops" would ever be. I guess maybe one of the reasons that "busting chops" could be considered serious is that maybe it could lead to violence. But I don't remember any of Our "busting chops' leading to violence. Maybe a little ego destroyer, but thats about it.

    First off - these pics pretty much suck as they were taken with my cell phone that I hate more than anything on earth, plus I was pretty busy.
    JHK (Dover FD) was dispatched for a house fire yesterday around 1700ish. Additional calls reported a subject with injuries, poss burns. First due crews stretched to the finished section of a raised ranch basement and quickly knocked down the fire, containing it to a very packed room. The resident was removed via ambulance to a landing zone and flown out with severe 3rd degree burns from the waist down.
    Mutual Aid was provided at the scene by Pawling, Wassaic, and Union Vale. Amenia stood by in Dover 1.
    Standby Companies also responded to and handled an active chimney fire with Dover's ladder.
    Later in the evening, while we were still at the house fire, we were dispatched for a rollover accident on Rt 343 (basically 100 yards from my house...of course). Mutual aid stand by companies responded along with our rescue engine to find a nice Mustang upside down in the roadway with one male with severe head injuries. A medevac was requested as well, and the patient also flown out. Dover and Millbrook remained on scene for traffic control for some time after.
    It was no doubt, a very hectic night in the Harlem Valley, with serious incidents handled well by all responding companies. Good work Gentlemen.

    funny you should ask British Transport Police are in the process of setting up a 100 man armed suport unit, so will have there own tactical team
    these guys won't carry as only the driver s a police officer (yellow vest) the guys in orange are all civilian engineers who will work alongside the police, fire rescue and ambulance staff after 7/7 and the inquiry a few new units were setup to deal with mass casulty events in and around london

    London Fire Brigade have USAR - Urban Search & Rescue

    London Ambulance have HART - Hazardous Area Response Team

    Met,City & BTP have under various names a CBRN response capibility and in the mets case the only non military EOD team in the country
    this unit has been around in one form or another for years, perviously it was staffed totally by civilians with no Blue light authority, they got round this and the law by assigning a police driver and repainting the vehicles with the word police covereing the section of the legislation for "police purposes"

  20. 210 liked a post in a topic by efdcapt115 in NYC ST. Patricks Day parade
    In one case;
    The Westchester FF's Pipes and Drums got formed under the leadership of some guys, like retired EFD Captains Timmy Harte and Rick Lynch (feel free to add to the list). The band rose to notice and was asked to march in between large fraternal organizations of FDNY firefighters.
    Because of the vast number of FDNY members, it would take several minutes for the entire regiment to pass, marching behind the great FDNY Pipes and Drums who lead the way. To cut that up they inserted the Westchester band to help out.
    It might have had something to do with TV commercial breaks and the passing of contingents by the viewing stand.
    The Westchester Emerald Society had reformed in the '80's after the band. These members organized, under Lt. Joe Dolan(?) of the White Plains F.D., the color guard for the Westchester band. This lead to the Emerald Society members gathering to march directly behind their guys in the band, with the informal blessing of the city Brothers.
    Some other original color guard members;
    Tommy Moriarity NRFD
    Jimmy Lang FDMV
    Bruce Kerr RyeFD
    In those original years of the Emeralds, the marching members out of respect for where they were and particularly honored, humbled, to participate amongst the members of the city, in their city, began to march in formation because they were numbered in few and actually completed the Westchester band's compliment.
    Over the years, this lead to expansion of the people who started showing up and attaching to the emerald society. Finally, added for probably security reasons as much as anything else the parade peoples said the contingent behind the band had grown too large (it had with the stragglers), and would therefore have to...."disband." lol
    "End of the Pack'ers" didn't help, as many who joined behind acted severely unprofessional. NO WAY the FDNY guys are going to let anybody come in there, on one of their most celebrated days, in the city they protect, endure injury and die for, and allow anything unprofessional that might be associated with the fire department. This became particularly important in the years following 9/11.
    It went back to just the band and the honor guard still doing their job, last I heard.
