If I were an African American, I would be insulted by a court decision that declared that the written and practical exams for the job of firefighter discriminated against people of my race. I worked with many dedicated African American Firefighters during my career and all of them scored high enough on both parts of the exam to be appointed and were proud (justifiably) of their accomplishment. Many went on to pass one or more promotional exams during their careers. The fire service needs only the best of the best (regardless of race, sex or religious beliefs) due to the nature of the job. Candidates who need to be recruited (begged) to come and take a written test that now could easily be passed by a grade school student are a hazard to civilians as well as the Firefighters who are forced to respond to dangerous incidents with them.

A wise old man once said. "a society that makes enemies of the police, had better make friends with the criminals”.

I look at it this way... Law Enforcement's jobs continue to get more and more difficult because A) society has decreasing respect for them, politicians and government leaders at all levels keep putting them in the spotlight as the enemy, C) the media like to make them look bad and D) people continue to get crazier and want to inflict harm to the innocent. If Law Enforcement is going to be the first responders to these awful occurrences, and - hopefully - interject to prevent horrific incidents from happening - I say give them anything they need! That small town cops don't need all of that stuff no longer means a thing to me after seeing all of the horrible things that happen in this country.
I, for one, fully endorse cops to have the best equipment and training possible to protect us and those we care about.

I agree with the quote in the article, most of these "issues" are just poor attempts to demonize the law enforcement community as a whole. Those who seek to discredit the police at every opportunity continue to ignore that police officers are our neighbors, friends, family and normal human beings, not some group of robotic storm troopers out to impose Draconian laws on unsuspecting people. Again and again they continue to make excuses for people who commit crimes by deflecting and changing the topic. I'm not ready to vilify or exonerate the Ferguson Officer, but I think he and his department (and the community) deserve a fair shooting investigation and one free of political spectacle as this situation has become.

The NYPD shot and killed someone, just because that person shot at them? Man, I hope there's a video out there that catches the last 1/4 of the interaction so Al Sharpton has something to latch onto for his next news conference. Surely the NYPD officer could have danced between the bullets, approached the perp and de-escalated (new progressive buzz-word) the situation.....you know....without excessive force.
Seriously though, thank god the officer and Marshall's are alive and I wish them a speedy recovery. Few agencies need support right now like the NYPD.
