While on the topic of FAST (RIT), almost nothing aggravates me more than when ICs say "send me another FAST, we are putting this one to work". If conditions are getting worse, then A) if you do need to use that FAST, this is probably around the time you will need it and won't have it, and the original FAST has (hopefully) been monitoring building stability, fire growth, etc since they arrived on scene and cannot then relay this to the new team that may or may not arrive for 15 minutes because they are "working".

12:04hrs: Using R-47 FAST team for overhaul
NOTE: If anyone has updates or corrections, message me. It got really confusing real quick because numerous M/A units could not get out of quarters due to manpower and were retoned several times. Or units could not get the requested apparatus out of quarters but could get another one out. I/C had to keep modifying his initial and prompt requests because of this. Units listed are the ones that did get crews and got out. But again, please message me with any corrections.
Great job by 60 Control keeping up with all the confusion that the above caused!

My point was that NFPA considered raising them above the almost nonexisting current.
However, many manufactures are already getting UL to certify that their cabs meet SAE-J2420, SAE-J2422, and ECE R29SAE crush standards,
Some custom cabs can support 120,000 pounds or more.
There are Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) for lighter vehicles #216 Roof Crush Resistance:
    GVW < 6,000 lbs: 3x vehicle weight
GVW 6,001 - 10,000 lbs: 1.5x vehicle weight (including ambulances)

While I see what you're saying, I think you might be over looking some the benefits of using a "custom" (purpose built cab over) chassis for most large apparatus applications. Custom (for the purpose of this discussion) chassis offer much better occupant safety in accidents. The frequency of accidents is greater, making this valuable point to consider spending the extra money. As you said, the FD's using tankers often have a smaller run volume and thus less operator experience, and even still a generally less rigorous driver training program. Add in some adrenaline and you have a recipe for a tanker involved accident. Why not at least acknowledge the increased risks and enhance the safety of the personnel on the rig? Also as Bnechis noted, the cabover design tends to be more maneuverable which is typically advantageous in rural settings.
Of course there are ways to minimize the risks of tanker accidents that should be undertaken as well, given the amount of potential from the weight of tanker apparatus. It has always been my belief tankers over 1200 gal. should not have emergency lights or audibles, but utilize yellow lights and respond with the flow of traffic minimizing some of the greater risks. But even if everything else was perfect I'd still prefer the apparatus that was most likely to protect the occupants best.

It is my understanding based on a phone call too a friend that the units purchased in the region were $330,000.00 but the Yonkers unit was modified to accomplish local missions as well as the UASI Task Force Mission and cost over $400,000.00. Yonkers Police ESU were the lead on this project and are forming a task force which is going to consist of YPD ESU, YFD, Empress ambulance and OEM personnel. It will be a regional as well as a national asset and should be in service end of August. They haven't received it yet and have a lot of work still ahead before it hits the streets. Hopes this answers some of the questios.

While I too am a proud volunteer, not only of my department, I think proper credit is due to all responders on this incident. This was a multi agency effort, volunteer and career. Everyone acted professionally, and cooperated with each other to the best of everyone's ability. I've never seen so many agencies operating at one incident on the Hudson. Kudos to all!
