A neighboring town has just placed a new engine into service, however they call it a squad. I have a friend in NJ who calls his ambulance a squad. We used to have an engine called a squad in Stamford but changed it to an engine, I was told because the same mattered to ISO. Another neighboring town used to call utilities (including old chief's cars) squads. So what defines a squad in general? I believe in FDNY they are engines with enhanced equipment, which of course brings with it dedicated personnel trained to use that equipment. So do all the departments calling their engines squads make this distinction? What about the places calling their rescues squads, do they do something that other rescues don't or can't?

I believe the general difference is that a ladder tower is a heavy duty aerial ladder with bucket on the end (mid or rearmount) and Tower ladder is used to describe those box beam aerials with buckets that have a ladder attached to the top of the aerial boom, neither being articulating? Using those loose definitions only Aerialscope and Sutphen produce "Tower Ladders" while the rest would be termed Ladder towers. That being said, why this would make a difference to anyone other than local jargon is beyond me.

The downtime was due to issues with the host, which have now been resolved.  The ads, albeit a bit intrusive, allow me to fund the site with less money out of my pocket.

You should be able to see and post in the Incident Alert forum once again. The Archive setting was only temporary while I moved some things around, but I didn't realize I missed a setting. I've also moved the Incident Chatbox back to the top of the site.

I've also consolidated the site a bit, to try to make it easier to read and use. Any suggestions to how to make the site better please let me know.  Also, please let me know if anything seems out of whack.

Thanks @AFS1970 and  everyone for your continued loyalty to the site.

    My opinion.

It seems when it comes to this incident and numbers, people seem seem to get stuck with certain numbers. Not picking anyone out of the crowd, it seems everybody does it.

Take the Cops. There were 60 cops LODD. But, that is not how anyone usually refers to the numbers. They will usually say 23 NYPD LODD and 37 PA NY/NJ LODD. How often do you hear someone say 60 cops were killed? Rarely will anyone reference the "60" number.  It is almost always broken down by Department.

I do not know why people tend to break down the numbers that way, but they do. They have, it seems, almost from 9/11 itself.

Let the number "343" stand if you want the number to refer to the number of FDNY LODD.

But, if you are going to reference the number of firefighters LODD, that number should be "344".

He will always be #344 to me also, despite never having met him (or anyone from the patrol). The layoff/disbanding of the patrol was one of two things that lead me to switch my insert in my old department to a brown shield with our utility as the unit number.

I know the site has been down a couple of times recently, but I have noticed a couple of things as it has come back up. First of all adds are covering parts of the site at the top of the screen, although not blocking any real content. But I also see that the Incident Alert section is now archived and we can't add new ones. That was probably the most active section.

Revisiting this topic, from a discussion on another online platform. There were 8 EMS workers listed as KIA, 2 of them from FDNY are listed in the 343, the other 6 are not even though some of them were 9-1-1 providers and thus working under the command and control of FDNY. 1 was from an NYC VAC that responded.

What was horrifying was that one poster in the conversation remembers treating a injured firefighter who had a 341 tattoo on his arm, because he was only counting the brother firefighters. He purposely left off the 2 FDNY EMS members.

The lack of brotherhood has made me rethink my previous idea that there was no intentional effort to leave people off the list.

For your information he was a member of the IAFF local I-26...dues paying member....not remembered by them also.... since the Fire Patrol pre dates the paid FDNY...and it was on the recommendation of the Board of Fire Underwriters that a paid dept be formed...given all this, the courtesy could have been extended...and should have been. Not only my opinion  but also of many others....

Well I guess that puts and end to the rumors. I had heard at least 3 different locations for the KME. Some said it would replace the quint at E6, I had heard it might also go to Long Ridge due to the state of their fleet. I had also heard E7, which I guess is confirmed now.

E8 seems to be either lucky or unlucky with rigs, depending on how you look at it. They seem to keep getting something new.

Both ends of this walk are deep into the woods and only accessible by ATV or foot. ATV's are not permitted on this property. Staff located the ATV and found it to be leaking fuel, and no rider in area. FD sent to assess fuel leak in swamp. PD sent to address trespassing issues.  Access to this scene required units to enter from a different road, come up a dirt access road and then walk in to scene. FD personnel were able to determine leak to be less than 5 gallons from a 6 gallon tank. DEEP (Department of Energy & Environmental Protection) notified of leak. While on scene, SPD units located owner walking in area and arrested him. Tow Truck called to remove ATV. FD attempting to start ATV and move it to location that is accessible by Tow Truck.

Description: Caller reported helicopter landing on roof of building which they believed to be suspicious. PD arrived and found this building formerly had a licensed heliport on the roof.
