You don't have to go to Detrot to find a scab, they are all around Port Chester. Career guys from other jobs close buy Volunteering when our job is suffering with low manpower down 50 % and soon to 60 % and now stealing our Fire Watch. Brotherhood is allmost gone

Ive been a member of this site for a long time now. In the past, there have been posts made by Chief Flynn that have gotten under my skin.
However and maybe its because ive grown up a bit, ive come to realize that he has opinions and is certainly entitled to them as is anyone else.
Chief Flynn has worked his way up the ladder of a very busy, pro-active and versatile career fire department. For that, i have nothing but respect for the man, as he has certainly earned it.
Chief Flynn is obviously a very intelligent man who has so much fire service knowledge and experience to share. For that, i have always enjoyed reading his posts as they are well thought out and written.
Maybe Chief Flynn indeed dislikes volunteer firefighters or the volunteer fire service as a whole, but you know what...who cares? Again, he is entitled to his opinions. Personally, i could care less who likes who and who doesn't.
Many of his posts and comments aimed at the volunteer fire service have merit. I guess maybe for some people the truth hurts.
Personally, i enjoy being a volunteer firefighter and helping the community (sorry if that sounds cliche). I have always tried to be the best firefighter i can be by taking as many courses as possible, training as much as possible and treating every day as a learning experience.
People need to worry about themselves and how they can be a better person, firefighter, etc and improve themselves and their agencies.
That said, stay safe and oh yeah, QTIP.
Now lets get back to the original topic at hand please.

Yeah, there is no way in hell that is the case. They give me about 15 seconds to jump out of the rack and get my boots on before they starting asking for my status on overnights ! But, in all seriousness, i'm pretty sure they have to go by whatever scheme the department establishes. As a small side bar, i really have to tip my hat to the 60 dispatchers - they do an awfully good job with the hands they are dealt (i often think that they are asked do their jobs with both legs and one arm tied behind their back). They do their best to get the job done - god knows they've figured out how to get me a bus when ~ 100 members between 3 agencies decide to shut the pager off. They probably bare witness to more egregiousness than anyone here in terms of this sort of stuff.
This is the kind of crap you would think the journal news would cover. Honestly, these are real stories.

Hello Members of the media (I know you read this)....why not do some investigative journalism into the very serious, life threatening issue of fire department and EMS departments in Westchester County vis-a-vis, oftentimes ridiculously long response times, inadequately trained responders, duplication of resources, lack of transparency in regard to finances and frankly many other issues within lots of departments. This is serious stuff!
Disclaimer- , I must very clearly state....this is not an attack on volunteer Firefighters, EMS workers or their departments! There are many dedicated and knowledgeable volunteer members of emergency services in this region. However, the SYSTEM is BROKEN!
Positive change very rarely comes from inside of an organization, but rather through blunt force trauma from the outside. Well media, how about a little blunt force trauma in regard to this issue? Personally, my own department has been going through some blunt force trauma from certain segments of the media lately, and I'm ok with that- there's nothing to hide, no organization is perfect, transparency and acceptance of change are good things....Why are volunteer organizations who equally hold the fate of people's lives and property (and taxes) in their hands getting a pass from the media?
In closing, I will pre-emptively state that I will not be engaging in a back and forth bicker on this topic, and yes, I do anticipate attempts at deflecting from the issue at hand by attacking myself personally as well as my own department. So, please don't take my non-responsiveness as acquiesence, agreement, or defeat. I'm just too busy to bother with responding to all of it. This post is really just for the media- maybe someday someone in the media in this area will wake up and realize how honest reporting in regard to this crisis would save lives, property and dollars. I'm not optimistic though, because I guess it's just easier to attack salaries, benefits, and pensions, and ignore an almost completely broken system right next door.
stay safe and qtip brothers and sisters!

They come to see the magnificent work of art.
To see the massive man made structure not caring about the thousands of souls that perished due to some quasi religious belief.
I bet most of the homeless have more respect than the average person.
Let everyone one forget how the millions rallied beyond the destruction flying American flags to show support for this country.
September 11 is already just another day.
We don't even have a president that respects this country, we expect our youth too.

Grumpyff ... I hear you loud and clear. I went with a group of armed feds escorting an internation law enforecement official. We left when it was suggested we hide firearms in our vehicles. We complained to management. Apparently they werent as happy to see our kind 10years later.

It's got nothing tto do with the city or how the memorial was designed, some people are just disprespectful period. I've been there twice, for the large amount of staff they have there, they seem to be doing an awful lot of nothing, no interpretation, no enforcement.. After the first incident with the school kids, there was an editorial from a retired Dep. Chief who summarized a sentiment I have heard before. This should be in the hands of the National Park Service, who run not only the Flight 92 National Memorial but as the chief mentioned World War II in the Pacific National Monument, (more commonly known as USS Arizona or Pearl Harbor). He was quite right in saying that the NPS does not tolerate any nonsense in running these sights and mantains a respecful and quiet atmosphere in deference to those lost.

The memorial disrespects us, as a police officer who responded on 9/11 I was not checked to see if I was carrying a firearm. Today I am not allowed into the museum/memorial while carrying my service weapon while off duty. It is staffed by a bunch of security guards wearing light blue shirts who have no authority. They should have just made a field with a tree for each victim.

Then there was the strangulation high and hyperventilation high that was going to kill America's youth 10 or 15 years ago. At least this one has very little risk of death or debilitating injury. I say let these kids be stupid and let the burns be the mark of the idiot.

I had the opportunity in visiting the Normandy beaches a few years ago. Unfortunately the area has turned into a tourist area and is complete with gift shops, hotels and golf courses. There are a few small museums and a lot of WW II pieces scattered around. They did leave many of the bluffs and the American Cemetery alone. I have to say that the American Cemetery is a magnificent monument to all those who died. Someone (not sure who maintains it) does a wonderful of maintaining the site. And this is a fitting tribute to those who are buried there. When you are in the cemetery, the amount of loss of life hits home. You really can’t put the day into perspective until you see all those graves, row after row after row. It is truly a shame that so many people had to die so we can sit behind a computer and complain in English about someone or thing without fear of the secret police taping you on the shoulder. Each Memorial Day we have parades and services for those spilled their blood to give us these freedoms, but we should say a short prayer of thanks today for those who died in such large numbers for our freedom.

All kidding aside, cheating is bad and its mere allegation taints the pool of candidates. These two buffoons need to be shown the door and room needs to be made for the honest guys who study and break their asses going to classes and hitting the books instead of the bar (most nights )
  22. BIGRED1 liked a post in a topic by efdcapt115 in Westchester Civil Service Captains Exam Scandal?
For me based on what has been reported here, the "dynamics" of this story just don't add up to a monitor catching the act. We apparently have two colluding test takers. If they were caught cheating by a monitor, my guess is the testing in that room would have been suspended, and at the very least the two people would have been removed. Paperwork about the incident would have been filed.
There is NO WAY the cheaters would have been certified on a list, one of those two then going on to interview for promotion, and then receiving that promotion if this scandal began with a monitor catching those involved in the act.
It sounds like after the fact of promotion, further information came to light, possibly the two tests were compared, and lined up identically. This evidence, combined with some notification from an involved party, comparison of seating charts, times of departure from the test, etc. could add up to an investigation being pursued, and possibly some sort of confession.
Once again I'd ask the question; what are people thinking these days? Has greed so clouded someone's better judgement that they would put at risk possibly their entire career for the chance at making a little more money? Reminds me of the firemen who got busted growing pot, the cop with the pills up at the airport, or the other examples we have seen through the years.
Remember what you stand to LOSE by trying to game the system, before you start thinking about what you stand to gain by taking such reckless and disgraceful chances. And if you have a conscience, an act like this should hound you forever.
And a PS: Receiving promotion is a great honor. Along with the money comes great responsibility, added stress, and sometimes straining health issues. Be prepared to be overwhelmed. If an officer tells you how great you have it as a firefighter, that officer knows the difference between the two job functions. Recognize and heed words of wisdom, and be thankful for what you have. Take some time to smell the roses....

Stupid f'ing bystanders always have so much to say. So quick to make complaints about effort and time. Did one of them get a fire extinguisher from the store they were in and try to help out? Stupid cowards, hiding in a store front talking about something they know nothing about. IE: "Why is there only one fire department person?" The name is a firefighter idiot not a fire department person.

Just a great response from all involved.
Assuming the people recording had already called 911, a 6+ minute response time with just one firefighter Officer is just fantastic! And for that other guy to just jump on into the smoke and flames with his obvious department issued Dickies pants and shirt, which of course are both commonly accepted PPE. Just a great job all around.

  25. BIGRED1 liked a post in a topic by v85 in Are we focusing too much on the "big stuff"
This was just a question that I have been wondering about for some time now. It seems that after 9/11 everyone is focusing on preparing for "the big one", as well they should but it just seems backwards to me when:
An ambulance corps has enough MCI equipment to treat 100+ patients, but can't get out the door for an elderly fall victim
A fire department has all of the latest and greatest HAZMAT and WMD gear, but needs to call massive amounts of mutual aid for a room and contents fire
A police department has plenty of tactical and active shooter training, but needs to call the state police or sheriff's office to handle a past burg or larceny
