I wasn't faulting you brother. You always have good posts. I was just pointing out in general that convicted arsonist...I believe he was convicted so he's not an "accused" arsonist if he was..he is an arsonist...that the egg came before the chicken. I was more and I laugh that my crickets post was deleted...that is one sentence that could and at least did with you...spark some more conversation on this topic. Even if it was directed as someone who called me out but couldn't answer to my direct response to his off kilter post.
I'm actually honored I said something that made another active participant on the site think about something. You guys often do with me as well.

if it wasnt for stupid people our departments would run without problems. what the heck where the morons thinking?? i really hope they got into alot of trouble for that stupid stunt they pulled. and for the guy taking the video bragging because he got it on video is nothing to be proud about. he should be happy his friend didnt get hurt badly.

Luckily Mahopac probably doesn't have a different procedure for Line of Duty vs Active Duty. They haven't had enough members pass where that distinction has to be made. How about who gives a rats a** how they did it so long as his friends and even more importantly his family were given some infinitesimal level of comfort. If the family wanted clowns and jugglers and the dept could provide it, then what more could anyone ask? This kind of s*** stirring goes right along with the people who question weather all LODD deaths are equal. It serves no benefit and only distracts from a department's attempt to honor the service of a member.

Joey was a "plank holder" in Squad Co. 61 (Bronx), when we were "transformed" by DC Ray Downey (RIP 9-11-01) from an engine co. to a squad co. in SOC. As a newly formed co. we were constantly drilling and preparing to "go-online" as a squad, and many members of the hand-picked company were the original engine members. Joey loved going to the "Rock" every day tour for the months of training- he was always "up" for any type of hands-on activity. Especially when it came to "ropes". He was one of my "rope fairies"- guys who loved to take out the high-angle and confined space gear and rig up scenarios to drill on. I remember one "24" tour where we had spent the whole day training at the "Rock";came back to quarters for the night tour and had chow;drilled again for an hour on "firefighter removal" from the cellar, and then the brothers sat in the kitchem while I did paperwork in the co. office. Around midnight I heard footsteps (not Santa's reindeer) on the roof, so I climbed the scuttle ladder to check it out. There on the roof was Joey and the rest of the crew, setting up to do a "pickoff" from the top floor bunkroom. I was beat, and looking forward to lying down on the couch- but what could I say? I became the "victim" in the window for them to "rescue". You had to admire Joe's burning desire to excel at all phases of firefighting and rescue.
When I got promoted up a rank, he made me a "cutdown" halligan as an officers tool, w/ my nickname welded on it- that was the type of guy Joe was! His Dad (Joe,Sr) is a retired and well-loved Deputy Chief from the South Bronx (Div 6) and my heart gors out to him and the family, and the brothers who knew Joey on FDNY and LI where Joey was also a volly in his hometown. Sorry for this rambling message, but I'm surely going to miss Joey and his quiet but infectious smile and personality. Joey, R.I.P.,brother!

why open pandoras box???? if u remember verplanck used to cover the entire tri-village with an ambulance. until 1984 when cortlandt vac was created. the vilage of Buchanan pays CCVAC for coverage and requires that we have 1 extra ambulance. i understand ur thought process. just the pride runs too deep in these three towns.
as for the amount of appuratus in the tri-village, its 7 engines, 2 tower ladders, 1 heavy rescue, 1 medium rescue, 1 ambulance, 1 casade truck, 1 boat, 3 utilites and 9 chief trucks.

While I do agree with some points made here like 28 miuntes for a FAST team is far to long to wait, fortunately this was for the most part an exterior surround and drown as the fire had made substantial progress prior to arrival of the first due unit and probably was burning for a good period of time prior to discovery and reporting. As for consolidation/regionalization I think that is a fantastic idea, however with NY being a home rule state and too many different entities to make it happen so maybe we should find another topic to beat to death. As stated most of the mutual aid at this job was for tankers, the Millwood engine was requested for the fill site and the Croton engine was requested for the dump site to supply the rigs at the top of the hill doing the attack. The 3 units that were held for manpower were due to the fact that this structure was a collyer's mansion so overhaul was a labor intensive operation. Utility 88 was requested for rehab, utility 12 was requested for the cascade. The county's policy requires a deputy coordinator for any mutual aid fire. My estimation of manpower was more like 60 - 70 firefighters. Mutual aid is not strictly used by only northern westchester it is used countywide by almost all departments except going into the city of yonkers. (Correct me if I am wrong here Chief Flynn). I do have 1 question for you Chief Flynn and I am not trying to start a career/vollie problem here since I have a tremendous amount of respect for you and your department. How many rigs (engines, trucks, rescues and any special units) would you get on your 2nd alarm and how many firefighters would that be. This post is strictly my own observations and opinions and in no way reflect my department or any department that operated at ths job and did a great job!

It's only a name. Can a fire department call themselves volunteer if they hire services like EMT's, or drivers? Heavens, we've been paying for services for years. We pay someone to clean the buildings, to service the rigs-- and a working rig is just as important to EMS as the EMT-- we pay someone to bill.... I think my home corps was even getting the rigs professionally detailed for parades for a while.
Does billing or staffing define volunteer? Perhaps it is time to call ourselves 'profits' or 'not for profits', though that said, I think most 'profits' aren't making much and most 'not for profits' are raking it in.
Whatever they call themselves, Brewster made a decision that puts patient care ahead of ego or tradition and for this they should be applauded. I am with those who wonder how this will affect mutual aid, however.

  19. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic by helicopper in Is there an Animal Response Team?
If this was a group of EMT's and/or medics or say the ABC VAC or 123 FD opting to create an animal rescue team, I'd agree with you but the people that staff this team are animal specialists (vets, vet techs, etc.) so no humans are suffering as a result of this program.
Don't blame the dysfunctional, fragmented EMS system on a well-intentioned group of people who exist only to care for our animals. This was a lesson learned after Katrina and several other disasters that we actually made an improvement on. Not one EMS resource is diverted by this initiative.
  20. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic by Disaster_Guy in Is there an Animal Response Team?
That's correct, WC-DES manages the Westchester County Animal Response Team (WesCART). They are a active volunteer group that "responds to emergencies that require animal rescue, evacuation, veterinary disaster care, and the sheltering of pets during a major disaster. WesCART is active in educating the public concerning disaster preparedness and pets." In English, when a disaster strikes and the need for pet sheltering or care arises, this group is the one to call. Since pets are not allowed into shelters, there really is a huge need for a specialized group like this to provide care for animals during disasters. I know for a fact that my local CERT has WesCART as their POC if a client arrives with pets and they can't find anywhere else to put them. At the Fire Training Center there is a WesCART trailer with their equipment. Check out the Facebook Page to see pictures of them in action. I don't really know much more about them because I am not a member, just a supporter.

For anyone who is interested, they are having a meeting tomorrow:
    WesCART General Membership Meeting
    Date: 9/22/2011
    Time: 7 PM
    Room #3
    Location: Westchester County DES
4 Dana Rd. Valhalla NY 10595
Parking for The Westchester County Department of Emergency Services is located in the visitor lot at 35 Walker Road. Please park in the upper lot and proceed down the stairs to the rear entrance of the building.

I came across a car fire on the Taconic State Parkway while driving up to school last March. After checking the car for passengers, I stepped back and began to film. While the NYSP had the Southbound lanes closed, one impatient citizen decided to drive up on the shoulder to get around. Listen to the commentary from a retired FF who stopped at the scene as well.
I personally like the comment "Gotta get back to the city" at 00:57.

I see many familiar OFPC faces in some of the pics, most I've taken ICS 300 and higher courses together with or teach other command courses...very well versed, very professional peeps with a down to earth understanding of emergency services.
x635...why are they greedy? People need cash and access to their banking systems which they are providing the service...if you have an account with them they aren't making any fees, people still need to live and survive and I'm willing to bet this was born out of prior disasters which that need was there and nothing was available. Is tide greedy for coming in with their name all over the mobile laundry trucks they bring into disaster areas?
  23. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic by PVFD113 in Fatal TSP Crash 9/8/11
The TSP is handled by 24-2-1 which is a 2005 KME 1000/1000 Engine/Rescue. Roll up doors do allow us to position closer to the rail and still have accequipmentquiment. The abbreviated list of equipment includes Holmatro rescue tools, Stabil struts, cribbing, high pressure air bags, portable winch (power at all 4 sides of the rig with a 2" receiver for the winch. It is kept at Station 2 on Peekskill Hollow Roaresponserespons with a minimum crew of 4. If additional personnel are needed, they are brought by out crew cab utility, a Chiefs car, or another piece of apparatus. We generally respond directly to scenes but to the parkway SOP is Fire Police POV and official vehicles only on the parkway.
As for space being tight--of course accidents rarely happen on the wide and straight part so yes at times navigating the "course" can be challenging -- especially when cars are stacked bumper to bumper and you have a guide rail on the left, and stone wall of guide rail on the right. This is where we would either cut off any traffic slipping past the incident and respond in the "wrong" way, or take (shut) a lane on the other side of the center rail (opposite direction of travel) -- IE scene is in the NB lanes, we would shut the left lane in the SB lanes and operathererom ther as a last resort.
And I was told that the "average" speed on our stretch of the TSP is 85 m.p.h. People are always trying to pass apparatus and try and blow through the scene before "WE cause a traffic back up". It can be CRAZY out there. Forget about the bad weather.....thats another story
  24. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic by Remember585 in Please Don't do this!
The Chief shouldn't be doing that. A probie nobody likes should be.
If Con Edison was on the scene confirming the hazard of electricity was eliminated, then it's putting out a simple fire. Period.
Operating on the roof... not that big of a deal in my opinion, we climb up there to wash the rigs, pack hose and fix antennas, right?
Settle down. Nobody knows all of the facts, right?
I hate how FFCC has become a place for people to post pictures of things they personally don't like because, often times, they've got a grudge against the person(s) or department(s) in the photo.
    We're our own worst enemies...

#1 if you dont have the proper information you should not be posting this picture!!!!!! the lines were cut off and the chief was given the go ahead by con ed to put out the visible fire.
#2 this is a local fire department and the chief of the department is a family friend.
#3 i called this in I was at the hospital when this happened i watched it from the ER entrance.
#4 He's using a dry chem. I myself have seen people using water cans in short bursts to put out lines on fire. as long as there is not a long spray from a water can you are completely safe. this is what I was told by a line men for con ed.
