    Brontosaurus 1 was always fun.
When we were clearing Phelps once with 55B2 when "The Sopranos" was still on, I said "Fifty-Five Bada-Bing Two is in service." Got back to quarters and our Chief was waiting for me. Expecting him to be real pissed, he said, "Hey *******, it's 55B2 not 55BB2."
    Well played Chief, well played.

Regarding the site's editing policy, I'd just like to observe how the process has changed over time:
    USED TO BE:
*You could delete any of your posts, anytime you felt like it. This apparently disrupted the flow of the threads, so it was eliminated.
*You could edit your posts going back in time with no limits.
*Used to be if you edited, it was a note at the bottom of the post.
    NOW:
*There's an "edit window" where you get a chance to correct or reword for a limited amount of hours.
*If God forbid, you DO edit you weasel, it looks like a big dirty pencil eraser that says "edited by such and such" in bold letters.
*So think twice before you edit. It's obviously frowned upon. You weasel. lol
Edit: I admit it, I've edited!

Really!!! There is no need to apologize! You simply posed a simple question out of pure honest personal interest and curiosity that became a political s*** storm as usual. I appreciate EVERYONE’s thoughts and professional opinions, but to continue to turn every damn thing into a political push is ridiculous. Honestly thats what is a complete turn off on this site!
I agree personnell is by far extremly imparitive (No debate from me), but the kid was just asking a simple question. It would be nice to see a topic stick to the point rather then become argumentive.

  16. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic by BFD1054 in Freelancing, Buffing, etc.....
Sorry everyone, but i want to discuss a topic that is a big pet pieve of mine: Freelancing or "buffing" of calls.
Manpower is always a hot topic here on EMTBravo and rightfully so. But i want to discuss another form of manpower, the kind that just shows up.
Why is this (or at least seems to be) an accepted practice in many areas? Time and time again, i see members of agencies that havent even been requested showing up to fires.
Better yet, i see members of agencies who HAVE been requested who show up on scenes in their POV's. If your agency is requested M/A for an engine, Truck, FAST, etc, why wouldnt/shouldnt you go to your respective station to "staff" the apparatus? Wouldnt it make more sense for EVERYONE to know who they have and if they can properly fill out the request?
It seems that there is way too much freelancing that occurs. This leads to a less uniform response and operation.
More importantly, it leads to lack of accountability and makes for a free-for-all on the fireground.
Im just curious what other members think of this, or does nobody else see it as an issue? Perhaps some of you feels its an acceptable practice?
This is obviously a volunteer issue. But any of the career members on here, please, feel free to chime in with your thoughts.
Im curious if any agencies have SOPs/SOGs regarding this?
Personally, i feel if people are found to be freelancing, they should be sent packing from the scene.
Manpower is great, but only good if its known/recorded.
    Ideas, thoughts, opinions?
    Thank you and stay safe!

Just because their dept was called, does not mean that accountability is properly handled.
In fact i find most mutual aid incidents do not have accountability (or they think they have it, but thats for another thread).
Without proper accountabilty you will have freelancing. Does not matter the type or size of department.

  19. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Accountability - How does your FD Handle it?
This came up on another thread, so lets look at this issue.
Hopefully everyone understands the importance of this issue.
How does your department handle accountability?
And does it really account for your personnel?
Do you handle the 1st rig or 2 different than once you have established a "full" command structure?
How are mutual aid agencies addressed?
How do you account for members (career or volunteers) who arrive on-scene without apparatus (i.e. buffing, POV, call back, etc.)?
  20. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic by sfrd18 in Structure Fire Responses in Westchester
JFLYNN, this thread is mearly for interest sake, to see what certain fire departments dispatch to the scene of the fire. If it is a paid department, there is a certain staffing level in which it is obvious to tell how many personnel are o/s. If a career department staffs 3 per rig, adding together the number of rigs then multiplying by 3 gives you the number of personnel on scene. For volunteers, it varries.
However, that aside, this thread is not about manpower and it is not about assessing a department's capabilities in regards to manpower. It is solely to see what and how many pieces of fire apparatus are dispatched to the scene depending on the department. It is, again, for interest sake and not to make it look like fire trucks are in any way more important than the firefighters that ride and operate them.
Yes, firefighters put out fires and personnel on scene is important, but this thread is not meant to discuss manpower, but rather apparatus response to structure fires in Westchester County.
    Hope this clears things up.

was acutally looking to answer some of the other questions that were asked on here. but since u just so happened to quote me i guess i will add what i think.
    1. i thought that FDNY Rescue companies do alot of specialty work such as tech rescue, and could be utlized as a truck company to do search and rescue at a fire.
    2. i see where this is gonna lead, and like every other topic its gonna come down to paid vs vollie. because vollies dont have as much training as career staff. it gets kinda old and seems to be popping up more and more frequently. i know im not the only one tired of seeing it.

? I have actually seen people with dwarfism pull 5 inch off the engine (not that hard, just grab the first length and run with it). Are you saying they need a larger hook than other people or that cause they are shorter they will grab the wrong one? Ok, so they need to get a bigger hook oh well. Do taller people use smaller hooks? Is that wrong? Uh we all use ladders there pal. I've also seen a ff with the same situation grab a 24' fiberglass extension ladder off the side of the engine and carry it to the side of the building and raise it up alone with no assistance whatsoever. If someone can do the job who cares what they look like or how they overcome it to get it done.

In the early 70's back in my original dept., the chief appointed a good friend of mine who was under the "minimum height requirement of 5'8" in bare feet". When a member of the [comic] common council questioned the appointment, the chief responded that in all of his years of service, he has yet to see a guy fight a fire in his bare feet. The appointment stood and made good reading in the local gossip sheet.
