Thank you!!! Some what 12 or so years later and there are those that still throw out HiPAA as if it is all encompassing. HiPAA was enacted to protect the electronic transfer of private health information. I hear far too many people throw out "its a HiPAA violation" and they don't know the first thing about what it actually is. If that video does have the patient in it and it is secure with limited acesss and not used anywhere else..how in the hell is it a HiPAA violation? Much like the cameras in a police vehicle, they have one that is front facing and often one that covers the back seat..hence if a patient makes a claim that a provider made an inappropriate contact...as Warner Wolf would say.."lets go to the video tape.

I had the privilege of being Jeff's instructor on several occasions and can tell you he is one of the most dedicated and motivated students I've had and is a very capable firefighter who earned every single certification he has by far exceeding the minimum standard. I would work with Jeff any day.
To simply put it..you have to meet the standards. We can debate what the "minimum" standard is, but everyone who enters a course, I can assure you at a "minimum" is meeting the standard of the curriculum set forth by NY State and the NFPA.

The reason behind fire districts having a separate election date, just like school districts, was to avoid a potential "politicization" of important services that on a community level are supposed to be viewed as vital and integral to having a successful community to begin with.
Don't ask me to site where that came from; it's part of the verbal history that is passed down among those involved, who want to see the service remain true to it's original intent and spirit.
    How 'bout them apples....

Some of you answers are going to come down to the provider, their experience and how the FAST may react depending on how they train. As far as finding an area outside the collapse zone...in all actually that's one and half times the height of the structure. Statistically firefighters have issues in single family dwellings...not going to be much unequipped EMS crews are going to be able to do inside such smaller structures. HIgh rises they should be staged 2 floors below the fire floor. If you couple in several other factors its no surprise that resuscitation rates of firefighters and civilians with smoke/toxic gas inhalation is very low. For one most FAST removals...are not going to be all that fast. On average by study it takes 12 firefighters to rescue 1. IF they are not breathing at the time they are found for removal...chances are there is going to be no opportunities to attempt, be conducive or safe to attempt resuscitation at the point of find. Once they come out..in order to be evaluated, treated and transported equipment is going to have to be removed. And with the most recent studies...most are experience high exposures to cyanide which in this county..no one is carrying cyanokit.
So as a firefighter I want as immediate treatment...if I have signs of life as I can get. If I have none..and I've been down a while...let me go...I don't want to be lingering with no brain activity or as broccoli for my kids to suffer worse.
As a provider...I'm jumping on your a** as quick as I can and I can pretty much guarantee at that point I won't be the only medic on you and we'll get multiple things going at once.
Lack of rehab is a management issue! If you have a policy...enforce it. PERIOD. I've been advocating rehabilitation for not just fire scenes but at training, communication with PD for their needs for certain types of SWAT deployments, etc. It is tough..but eventually it breaks through.

What do the French know? That their best military unit is made up of foreigners. The French Foreign Legion. Out side of the ROK and Royals Marines...they are some of the toughest SOB's I've worked with. Otherwise the French know they are irrelevant in the world and not a super power which gets under their skin. They are no different then the Russians who will sell arms to the lowest bidder...Iraq, Egygt...etc...and when they haven't gotten full payment will attempt to thwart anything we do in the UN so they get their money. So f*ck the french.
As far as the other guy. I think he should have been put out. But I think the DA sounded sincere when he said he also took into consideration the family of PO Faulkner and what they would have to go through for the process to continue. He will get his someday somewhere.

Ah...no. You know me very very well..and when I have a problem...I voice it. I go through the channels I need to, to point it out...but you know I don't say anything I won't say to a person or people involved. So you know some crews have gotten and earful from me when the "ALS intercept" parade was going on for calls that were clearly made to the company requesting ALS transport. So instead of turning it down or telling them to simply call 911..they would send a BLS bus and then they would request ALS through 911. 9 times out of 10...I and my colleagues would arrive on scene with the patient just barely on the stretcher. That's abusing my system for the benefit of that agency. That doesn't fly to me. Anything else I can say I keep to myself because those were professional explanations to others that wore a paramedic patch..the state one..not the one on the company patch. No one who calls for a helicopter in my district should be surprised that we show up...and then attempt to catch an attitude when I cancel it when it was more then clear it wasn't needed. Only to attempt to state protocol which wasn't even correct at that. But I'll shut up now.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the case, On December 9, 1981 at 0350 hours Philidelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner conducted a traffic stop at the corner of 12th Street and Locust Street. PO Faulkner was attempting to arrest Wesley Cook when Cook's brother wesley (AKA mumia abu jamal who is a confirmed black panther) ran across the street and cowardly and like the piece of s*** that he is, shot officer Faulkner in the back. PO Faulkner was able to fire one round that struck mumia in the chest. PO Faulkner then collapsed to the ground. Mumia abu jamal in a second cowardly cold blooded move then shot officer faulkner 4 times at close range including once in the face.
The backup units arrived 90 seconds after the call for backup and found mumia next to officer faulkner holdig a gun, the gun that was used to murder danny faulkner. Mumia was identified by 4 witnesses as the man who murdered officer faulkner.
Mumia was found guilty in 1982 and sentenced to death. In 1989 the PA Supreme Court upheld the conviction and denied a request for a retrial. The US Supreme Court refused to hear arguments on mumias claims.
In 2008 a federal appeals court in their infinite wisdom ( please note the sarcasm) decided abu jamal should get a new sentencing hearing on the grounds that the instructions given to the jury in 1982 "may have been" misleading.
Yesterday, the Philidelphia DA decided to not seek the death penalty again and instead chose to seek life without parole.
This case had a mountain of overwhelming evidence and this mans guilt is undeniable but it seems that the pressure that was put forth by the likes of susan serandon, ed asner, maya angelou, alec baldwin, the beastie boys, harry belafonte, the black eyed peas, and the city of st. denis in france even named a friggen street after him - a street named in honor of a cop killer - UNREAL.
It is no secret that society sees the lives of police officers as expendable. It seems that today it is socially "hip" to be anti cop.
For those of you who took the time to read this rant I thank you. Very rarely do I let things get under my skin but I see the support for this murderer as a direct assault on myself and on police officers everywhere. Death would have been too good for this murderer but death is what he deserved. This animal gets to live out his life treated like a hero by those around him in jail but where is the justice for danny faulkner who is THE REAL HERO...

good evening everyone while i should have been good about posting this earlier i completely had a major brain fart.
Today on the 7th day of December the year 2011, marks the 70th anniversy in which many US service men and women lost their lives when the japaneese decided to bomb the pacific fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. this event would not only mark the entry of the United States into the 2nd World War but would make the world realize that the United States would be a "SUPER POWER". FDR would later call December 7th "A DAY THAT WILL LIVE IN INFAMY". so with that said lets all take a moment and pause to remember those 2,402 that were killed that awful day.
    thank you everyone stay safe

  16. MoFire390 liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Mother of MI sophmore who died wants AED's in MI schools
In May 2002, NYS legislation was approved to require all public school districts, BOCES, county vocational education and extension boards, and charter schools, to provide and maintain on-site, in each instructional school facility, at least one functional automated external defibrillator (AED).
In August 2002, an amendment to the legislation was adopted that allowed school districts, BOCES, county vocational and extension boards, and charter schools that are unable to comply with the new law by September 1, 2002, to delay implementation until December 1, 2002.
Note: the law was past after every school had set there budget for the 2002/3 school year. And many schools had to use contigincy funds or lay off personnel to meet this state unfunded mandate. The extension was granted, because the massive run on AED's state wide, made them unavailable. In my district they purchased more than 50 AEDs, Now how many school were purchased in the 700 school districts in NYS?
What Does Education Law §917 Require?
Section 917 of Education Law requires all school districts to become Public Access Defibrillator providers in accordance with Public Health Law 3000-b. Prior to the passage of Section 917, school districts were encouraged to voluntarily become PAD providers.
Under Public Health Law 3000-b all school districts, BOCES, county vocational education and extension boards, and charter schools must provide and maintain on-site, in each instructional school facility, at least one functional automated external defibrillator (AED) for use during emergencies. The legislation also requires public school officials and administrators responsible for such school facilities to ensure the presence of at least one staff person who is trained in the operation and use of an AED.
How many AEDs will districts and BOCES need?
Districts must consider: size and physical layout of the building, number and ages of individuals in the building, types and locations of athletic events, location of curricular and extracurricular events, and other design features that might be unique to the facility.
An AED must be available whenever public school facilities (including school districts, BOCES, county vocational education and extension or a charter school) are used for school sponsored or approved curricular or extracurricular activities and events, including athletic contests.
A school sponsored athletic event means both extraclass intramural activity of instruction, practice and competition for students in grades 4-12 and interschool competitive athletic events of instruction, practice or competition for students in grades 7-12 held at any location, even non-public school facilities.
As a general rule, the Taylor Law provides that the addition of a duty is mandatorily negotiable if the additional duty is not inherently part of the employee's existing duty description. Therefore, those employees who are already required, as part of their regular duties, to provide emergency care response, can be required to perform AED use without additional compensation.
So most school district employees can get paid for training in AED & technically paid for maintaining their certification, even if they are unlikely to use it. Thats a lot of money

I too hope to get out to Pearl and visit the Arizona memorial in which 1600+ U.S. servicemen are still entombed. Everyone should remember that it was this event that catapulted us into the most destructive and costly war in human history to date. It was also for many the last "good war" in which our side was clearly the "good guys". From this event the U. S. lost over 500,000 dead and hundreds of thousands if not millions more wounded to rid the world of the evils of Imperialist Japan and Nazi Germany. Let us never forget the sacrifices of Dec. 7th 1941 "the day that will live in infamy" and the world war that ensued. To the rest of the world and any would be conquerors and terrorists out there may they learn from history that to attack America will spell their doom.

This was an active FDNY member non-LODD funeral recently upstate. The members of this brothers company decided to give him this send-off. The FDNY Pipes & Drums led the procession as a few hundred members stood along the road in their uniforms. Local fire departments were asked to use their tower ladders to hang a large flag for the procession to pass under. This is the way they chose to respect him. Every fire department/company has the right to honor their own the way they see fit, and Mahopac did.
