Nice work Yonkers in working these 2 jobs the same day under really bad conditions.
Sorry did I just go off topic here?

I would rather not answer any questions about myself on this thread. As gpeifer mentioned it was originally about a fantastic job our members did on a very busy and frigid night, surely saving multiple lives and mitigating property damage, and I would hope it might focus on its original intent. As far as 313- apparatus is not my division and I would rather not get into that, and as far as regionalization / consolidation- I am for it under the right circumstances but again, this is not the correct thread to discuss that. I will keep an eye on this site over the next week or so, and if a thread pops up with regionalization / consolidation as the topic I will consider chiming in. Same thing for the memorabilia / museum question- this is not the appropriate thread to discuss that.
I would like to keep the attention on the great work that our members did on the night in question, as well as during numerous other working fires so far this winter (most of which were not reported on in the IA section here) . Notably, the skilled and dedicated firefighting operations that took place on the night of the 2 jobs that this thread initially focused on was done by a force comprised of 1 in 6 firefighters with only a week or so out of the academy, and another 30+ with less than a year on the job, and many of the bosses very new in their current rank, I was not at all involved with the operations on that night, but I am very proud of the excellent work that was done by our members and the attention should be on them in this thread.

How did this post, originally about a great job done by all, including the rescue of ten people in below freezing temperatures become a diatribe about everything except the job. I was surprised to even see a post about a yonkers fire since the incident alert section has not posted many of our jobs the past few months.

He is their boss, he is ultimately responsible for the work they get PAID to do. They have a JOB to do, and that comes before volunteering at an organization. I can't tell my private employer that I want to be paid to go fight fires. That would be considered walking out of your JOB.
I mean hell, if people are going to go on calls while on the clock for the town, why not just PAY them to BE FIREFIGHTERS, not water/highway/parks workers.

I don't even know this guy, but from the sounds of it, if you are against him you are a moron. Any man who is willing to risk his reputation for the safety of the men is what I consider an allstar. All these guys who think he is the problem should go take a walk outside of Sloan Kettering on York Ave. Look at all the people who are sick from cancer, then see why this guy is so adamant about your welfare. Or you could just be in the clique and suck up to the next Chief and get stretch marks on your mouth.

I think its paramount that everyone who belongs to a labor union, whether or not your private or public sector to oppose this proposed repeal. It would mean the literal enslavement of the public sector workers that would be suject to the whim's of administrators and politicans currying votes. I'm not public sector, but i'm private sector union and I know the damage it can do to a union; It's tantamount to putting a knife into someone with their back turned away from you. The playing field has to be level. It has to be stopped at all costs.

Its sad that that is all you can see. I have trained a lot of LEO's over the years and this is not bias.
Everyone here is assuming this was a house fire it was not. It was an occupied fire proof multiple dwelling. When the apartment door to an apartment on fire in this type of building is opened the remaining tenents are all placed in grave dangers. If people are still trying to evacuate from adjacent apts or from upper floors and the door is opened the halls and stairs fill with toxic smoke. We are tought to control the door and not force it wide open. This also has the potential to creat a wind driven fire in the hallway, which has killed FF's & civilians. We have been to many fires in these projects the layout is such that a kitchen fire (as this was reported to be) will trap people in the bedrooms (the kitchens are at the front of the apt) if the front door is open and not controlled prior to a hose line being inplace.
If we replace,ff with an off duty ff from an area that does not have multiple dwellings the result would be the same. Forcing opening the fire apt door placed dozens of civilians into a life threatening scenario, particularly since the apartment was evacuated prior to PD's arrival.
How much risk was involved and what was the potential reward?
Also if a PD LT. says his officers did the wrong thing in public, how is it that we are biased for saying the same thing?

Things turned hairy real fast and people got caught off guard AGAIN, when will people learn?? People still refused to evacuate even during MANDATORY evacuation requests, and now first responders are putting their lives on the line for these idiots...WHY? What good are you going to do by staying in your precious home? You cant stop flooding, you can clean up and re-build though, and yet people still refuse to leave when prompted...
Lessons should have been learned in Irene, but obviously they weren't. Im sitting here in the EOC tonight in disbelief that so many lives have been lost and more are being threatened when it could have been prevented by evacuating...you CANT fix STUPID...

This is a pretty hairy one, but there's definitely some good knowledge to be gathered from this. I think I posted the ATF Model of this fire on here a few months back, if you haven't seen it there's a link in the NIOSH report. Definitely shows the importance of proper control of ventilation and protecting the stairwell, I think out of everything to take away from this report, those are the two most realistic things the individual firefighter can do to prevent something like this.

To comment on 87D124's post, how can you advise people who want to know the "TRUTH" to contact the owners/operators, etc. of Empress for the TRUTH? Wouldn't they have to contact all entities involved to do some research and hear about the different figures, plans, etc. given to the different groups?
First and foremost, nobody in the YFD, the Firefighter's union or the Fire Officer's union blame anyone in Empress for anything, as you insinuate in your "TRUTH" posting.
Furthermore, the rumors are NOT being spread around by people who are angry with the City Coucil about budget cuts because the City Council didn't/doesn't come up with the cuts.
The fact of the matter is that the City Administration are telling the democratic City Council members one thing, the republican city council members another thing, the YFD another thing, Empress another thing, the firefighter's union one thing, the fire officers' union another thing and then the press yet another thing.
No one was angry with the City Council about the budget cuts either because as I mentioned earlier, they did not/do not propose budget cuts. The mayor's office proposed the cuts with "HIS" budget. The city council then has to review the information and either pass it or send it back to the mayor.
Anyone wanting to know the "TRUTH" would have to be in the room with all of the entities involved and that would never happen (even though it was requested).
It wouldn't and didn't happen because how can those in charge of a city give the truth or honest answers to any of these entities when they don't have a real plan nor the first clue about operations, safety or the health and well being of the citizens?

After a long 4 1/2 year battle the 2nd circuit ruled yesterday against me, the findings of the court basically say that because of lack of proof they would not rule in my favor. I know the truth, promotions were stopped by the request of the Vulcan Society and senior Black officers of the FDMV. The decision of my attorney to go for a summary judgement was because of the NH20 decision from our highest court. They stated that you can't hold back a list of white firefighters in fear of litagation alone. In my case the City Attorney at the time on federal EEOC forms stated that she didn't want to promote in fear of a lawsuit from the Vulcans. 3 days after the promotion was stopped the Vulcans very own attorney withdrew the complaint claiming that the review of the decree showed that there was no violation if the promotions of 2 white firefighters went ahead. The City Attorney did nothing but ignore the Vulcans Attorney and ordered the civil service commission to terminate the list even though it had 2 weeks to go before termination date. Facts are facts and we will go on knowing the truth and who was involved in this case. That same very attorney is now a city court judge and I pray that she doesn't rule on the bench because of race.
I have to say that I am proud that I stood up and fought this case, even though the results were not in my favor I realize that throughout the country racism is strong in the fire service, against white and black, females, asians, hispanics etc. The brotherhood that I am very proud to be a member of certainly has some issues. I will continue to serve the citizens of Mount Vernon to the best of my ability something that I swore that I would do. There is no other career that I would want to do. I also want to take this time to thank everyone for the donations, words of encouragement and just the support that I have recieved. Its been a long haul but well worth itThe world is round and someday those who were responsible for this mess will realize that.Again, thank you and be safe! FF Joseph J Carroll FDMV

I hate to say it but let's be real fellows we are many times our own worst enemy. All you ever hear during these times and when negotiating a contract with these City officials is the number of guys who are out on 207a. It's not so much the members fault I guess because it was the Conference of Mayors who agreed on this disability package and has made it so easy to obtain, so why not try and get out for a hangnail. Maybe the City should start hiring Private Investigators to follow up on these cases like other States do and if 207a members are found of cheating the system incarcerate the bums and there you'll have the $$$$$ to prevent such layoffs. Maybe it's also time for all members of all the Locals to bring back the ole "peer pressure" and embarass some of the phonies out there from even filing. If your legitamately hurt then fine you deserve it but if your caught scamming you deserve what you get. I thought our Job was a "Brotherhood". BTW how many guys does NRFD have out on 207a?

2001- Who flew into the WTC, Ralph Waldo Emerson?
2011- Bin Ladin is dead, but radical Islam is alive and flourishing.
