Imagine if something like this were to happen in Westchester County?? I can only imagine the hissy fits that would be thrown. Good for them, glad to see people stepped up to the plate and made things happen.
On a side note. How will RFD provide these FF's? do they plan on hiring new ones or just adding more hours to the current FF's?

The problem is that the City of New York already has fire protection in the form of FDNY. These volunteer fire companys are nothing but freelancers...what do we call the guy on the fire scene who doesn't listen to any orders, ignores accountability, and does what he wants(besides ahole), yeah that's right, a FREELANCER. The same applies here, this company is basically buffing jobs off of a scanner(their not dispatched by FDNY), they don't follow FDNY SOPs/SOGs, they may have their own. I'd like to see what the response would be if I bought my own firetruck and started responding undispatched to jobs in Mamaroneck...I'm sure I'd turn a few heads.
On the training aspect, FDNY has their academy/training set up the way that they want their personnel trained. I'm going to guarantee that the AVFD doesn't attend the FDNY academy. What happens if one of these volunteer members gets injured in the line of duty? I bet that they would go after the City for it. This opens up a huge liability to NYC with organzations like this freelancing around the city. How about the unprofessionalism that is displayed when these guys show up and a dispute takes place?
Don't always take the "Paid guys are just causing trouble" approach. Look at things from the other side a little bit, and try and see that doing the right thing isn't always doing the right thing.

You're young, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Generally speaking, a smoking pile of debris 6 hours later does not count as a nice knock down or good job. Unless you're talking about the excavator that was used for overhaul, that did a good job knocking down what remained of the structure.

Paging for any available driver for the bioattack, anyone, Bueller? Bueller?
Note: this is not to respond into NYC, we all know everyone would show for that, we want you to run a decon station in lets say Greenburgh.
Oh thats right the 6 depts. there said they wanted nothing to due with being a mass decon unit (MDU) and they never got the training and the equipment that was "assigned" still sits at DES rotting.

Looks like the Director of Homeland Security needs a reality check into the workings of Emergency Services in the Hudson Valley. Most agencies have a hard enough time handling simple calls for service as it is, I don't know what kind of "major role" he is expecting agencies to play in a NYC terror attack.

But my little department is MINE. I don't want to be part of a department that is 10 times bigger and busier because I may not have enough votes to stay chief and keep my car and other perks. I like being the big fish in my little pond. Why would I want to be a medium sized fish in a big pond. Or worse a little fish in a big pond.
I'm special in my department. I wouldn't be so special in a bigger one.
So what if it would save the taxpayer money and give us more guys on every call. That's not why I signed up for this!

Can fire prevention programs actually prevent things like a lightning strike? Or the malfunction of electrical equipment (even if properly used/maintained)?....No
So maybe the real reason they have not had any fires is because they cover too small an area. That means that statisticly they will go for x number of years between fires.
We have many neighborhoods in my city that are the same size as each of those depts. And we have not had a worker in any of them in 2 or more years. But because we cover 10x the area we will have a number of workers each year and that helps maintain our skills.

Isn't this the reason we have county coordinators? They should be the ones assisting the IC. "Hey Chief we have multiple units operating on different frequencies". The IC is way to busy working and it is the job of the coordinators to handle these things.....

"60 Control to Eng** Would you like (other departments name here) to respond as well"
"They can come if they want too"

Last winter, Town of Ulster PD were dispatched to a subject trying to go into the frozen Hudson River with his jetski, and ended up getting stuck on the ice. One LEO on scene called for the FD to assist, and when clearing the scene, the LEO said "subject nominated for a Darwin Award, back in service"

In my limited experience; I've worn older Globe and Janesville gear. More recently it's been all Morning Pride for me. I've seen some demo Globe X stuff and some Quaker and Lion. Both Quaker and Lion were a little "light weight" in terms of durability for my taste. When I was a volunteer, we had Morning Pride which used a "Nomex III" outer shell. It was a bit stiffer and heavier, but offered a great deal of durability. Since coming on the job in New York City we've had Morning Pride which has a PBI outer shell, if I'm not mistaken. It's fairly flexible and light-weight, which is good. Considering how much it weighs after I fill the pockets with tools, webbing and rope, I'd like a coat that starts out as light as possible. The downside? Well, I'd say that it's a tad prone to tearing and excessive wear. We send out gear out every six months for cleaning and repair. It always comes back with patches and such. Now, granted, I know the cleaning company might be a little liberal with their repairs (they have to make a buck!) it does wear out pretty quickly. Forget fire duty, it's the wearing of the gear while jumping on and off the rig, carrying tools or hose and taking it on and off 10 times a day when you're working. That's what wears that stuff out and it sure does wear out.

Sometimes nothing more than some fancy lettering on the side of a rig and some T-shirts purchased in bulk with RESCUE scrawled on the back.

Personally I don't think they should have to worry about the hits they took from the past few storms. Problem is people are just too damned spoiled and really don't understand the dynamics of power grids particularly when the damage is vast and to primary infrastructure. People think they are more important then the next and that power should be on in 45 minutes. Its getting ridiculous.
As far as more workers...if that's a significant issues...I say absolutely. I would imagine the union would be taking up that issue as well...and I'll be flat out honest...I would say I would support them..but I don't see their union stepping up for their members who like to come in and do my job.
If anything...they are using money on the backs of their customers. Times aren't getting any easier...they should do their best to find a way to lower costs for customers.

While I appreciate firedude posting this up, I say Con Ed has some set to be making charitable donations, while their trucks are out there operating unsafely with one person per rig.
Save the "goodwill gesture" Con Ed...hire some damn workers!
