I'm not sharing this to pick on anyone, but as a general reminder to keep your cool and choose your language wisely on the radio.  Some colorful language is used at the beginning of this video, using some strong words that should NEVER be transmitted over any frequency!

What is a firefighter when you are employed as one? You complete a CPAT for one, you take a civil service exam. Unless of course you forgot the rural metro BS back in the 90's. When you die, your family gets paid. You have benefits that have been awarded. The list could go on and on. In NYS sitting in a firehouse for 11 bucks an hour and driving the rig because the dept can not get anyone to respond is not doing a damn thing for anyone but getting 500 gallons of water somewhere. How is that? Sorry to keep you waiting, but real firefighters work nights and weekends too!

So you take one physical fitness test and you are good for 20+ years. Cash in the pocket of your loved ones should you die, Health benefits paid for. You are a perfect example of why the fire service is going down the tubes. Not a mention of training, having a desire to be in the fire service, wanting to learn and teach those younger than you. BTW your last sentence is apparently a bash at volunteers, and I and many of my brothers respond day and night along with weekends! I would rather crawl down a hall with a younger volunteer fresh out of FF 1 and 2 than some of the career guys who have been holding on for 30+ years without doing a sit up.

What Department around here has not been awarded a grant in the past 10 years? AFG, SAFER, County/State pork barrel grants. All of these grants take from others and deliver to individual depts. If your Dept has not received one, it is your fault for not stating your case properly. I would have been shocked if the local Dept's did not ask for $, i just hope they can justify it. I just hope they have a better arguement than the South Nyack Mayor.

What would be the standard?? Is it National FF1? A new NYS FF Standard? Require all FF's to be EMT certified? NYS has offered so many courses over the years many volunteers probably do not know what their certification is. If you go to 1 standard, would it not make sense to have an annual CPAT as well as physical to ensure the FF is still able to fulfill his duties? Who is going to monitor this, AHJ? If NYS does not change the way municipalities operate, nothing can be enforced. NYS will adopt new standards, and every Dept will say they comply (wink, wink). For now and for the forseeable future, it will be up to the individual Dept to ensure each FF they place on duty is capable of performing all duties competently and safely. How many Dept's today can say that their members meet that today? My guess would be not that many, and that includes both volunteer and fully paid career departments.

First off I can't believe you would rate my content and knowledge based on what my affiliation title says. How about almost 20 years in the second busiest FD in Westchester. 6 years as a fire officer. Assigned to all 3 truck companies in my city where the real men do work over the last 18 years. ( sorry engine brothers ) I was probably crawling down hallways while you were walking down hallways in junior high school.

Is it really the cops fault that the alternate roads are all windy one lane roads and people have no freakin' idea where they are? Not for anything but I found out about the accident while still in NYC and avoided the area from miles away. It's not like the media didn't warn people and it's really not rocket science.

And, after a while of hearing "is the road closed" and "but that's the way I know" you have to go back and sit in the car or you're gonna say something that gets you jammed up!

While I understand serving the public can be a little frustrating, isnt that part of the job? I was nowhere near the accident, do not know the area that well, but...

If roads are closed down, and it is the PD closing those roads or at the point where the road is closed to keep the public out, is it too much to expect them to be at least a little bit courteous or helpful? I doubt everyone who got caught in the traffic knew a back way around it or had GPS to help them.

I know you and many othe LEO's feel there is an anti cop bias here (maybe there is), but to dismiss the complaint of the member above as the public are morons and poor drivers is a little disingenuous. You are not shy about jumping in on fire topics, so here is my first jumping in to an LEO topic: If you are at a barricade of a closed road, at least be outside of your car and try to be helpful to the public. If at such time you feel the need to draw your revolver, ask for another car to relieve you.

To those of you who are criticizing the video and or the department, if you look at the comments section in the video the person (poprecords1) who uploaded this originally commented that "The set-up is designed to (mostly) stay on the truck and not effect its utility. The system that controls the lights and the speakers are removed when not at the parade. The lights and work do not cost the taxpayers a penny."

There are characters in the bucket and lights going up the ladder that LOOK like they would at least impair your using the railing as climbing. Unless the characters in the bucket do better work than the firemen, how does this NOT effect utility???

I thought I would start a new thread regarding building construction and what your department does/does not do regarding awareness of different types of construction in your response area. Fire Departments need to be proactive regarding this, since it is obvious current codes do not take our safety as one of their top concerns. With all of the available technology out there, it should be pretty easy for Fire Departments to get their hands on different construction types and input it into your pre plans. A couple of questions regarding what your department does to protect it's members:

If you have MTD's, have you linked it through your building department to have access on construction type?

If you do not have MTD's, are you aware (thru pre plan) of what type of construction type you are responding to?

If you do have a plan, let us know how it works.

If you don't have a plan, what are you going to do to put one together.

You need to educate the politicians in order to effect any change about sprinkler laws, and they are as uneducated as the general public to their benefits. As Capt Nechis stated earlier most believe the Hollywood version of sprinklers. The bottom line is the building and construction lobby is a lot stronger than the fire (IAFF and FASNY) lobby is. Maybe these groups could partner with Insurance companies to show true benefits of residential sprinklers.

As people have said, it is perception rather than anything else. Is their a job related reason the chief was on facebook, on duty in his/her car? Very doubtful. When working in a vehicle provided by your municipality stay off of anything that is not a municipal or service related site. No reason to update your status that you are 3rd due to some fire in another municipality.

The first step in this decision should be, what is the level of training of PD, FD, and EMS in the municipality. Most if not all career depts have EMT FF's and EMS, not sure about PD. Volunteer Dept's depends on community, again not sure of PD or EMS. Off of a phone call you have no idea what the actual injury may or may not be. To have an untrained responder regardless of affiliation give inappropriate care could be harmful to that organization. Every organization (PD, FD, EMS) hates to be bothered with "non-essential" callls, but you cant make that determination until the lolfdgb has been evaluated. As Capt Glover stated earlier these are the calls you should take pride in, regardless of your affiliation.

Maybe the fire service can honor the memory of Captain Sullivan and his family and use this horrific tragedy as an example of why residential sprinklers are needed. Politicians would be hard pressed to ignore all of the coverage of this fire, as well as the fire in Stamford over Christmas that killed 5. The Sullivan Family residential sprinkler bill.

Why should I send my truck to a car accident if it does not carry extrication equipment? Standardize response based on manpower,equipment capability, and training. Let's go back to basics. What does your Dept require to be interior qualified (NYS training classes)? Do you require annual physicals? Do you require annual training? Do you require annual attendance? Do you require older members to update their outdated training certs, or do you grandfather them in? I would rather call in a Dept with 3-4 trained FF's that is 10 minutes away than call in a neighbor who will show up with a driver and 2 exterior firefighters in 4 minutes.

Before you respond to this, think long and hard about which Dept you belong to.

Chief Flynn has an uncanny ability to ruffle the feathers of many on this board every time he posts. As a career fire officer once told me, figures lie and liars figure. If you are going to bash the Chief for his comments, back them up with some facts as he did. I am sure once all of the numbers are out there we can go on and on about numbers of career vs volunteer and number of calls responded to career vs volunteer as well as distance travelled to each call career vs volunteer. The bottom line is, when was the last time you read about a career chief passing another on the way to a call, make fun of that chief on a recorded radio channel for going too slow, and then plow into an unsuspecting driver? The actions of the Chief in this article are beyond defending.

Maybe all involved can post their Department's SOG's and policies regarding drivers: training, minimum time required, courses required, etc. That would prove to be a more educational topic.

When you possess the knowledge to help a situation either through intervention or providing HELPFUL information to responding parties your position as a passenger changes to responder, and for that your fare has already been paid for through hundreds of hours of training and experience. In many cases the hours of experience is in the ten's of thousands. If you look at the ridership on the train, I can guarantee you that when it hits the fan you will see about 99.9% of the riders heading in the right direction, you need those of us who would be heading in the opposite direction there, especially if it is you that needs it.

So FD, PD and EMS should get free airline tickets, cruise tickets along with free tickets to Disney because they have BLS skills or are willing to confront antagonists?? Are the engineers who designed the trains given free rides? Are Doctors, nurses, lawyers invited to ride free because they possess the knowledge to help a situation? If the Emergency Service employees are heading to or going home from duty I might buy it but other than that, pay the $12 like everyone else and shut up.

This guy should join the department. He is at every call about 5 minutes before the FD.

The fight was outside of Geno's Cheesesteak place, not at the game. I have been to Flyer Ranger games at the old Spectrum and Flyer fans are insane. I would not be suprised if this occured simply bacause of the victims jersey.

If anything, it shows a lack of regard to the residents of Fulton County that their local government lets this happen. I would think that firefighters would not blame the Dept for following orders. I am sure that these resident's can not opt out of paying school, police and other taxes, why let them opt out of fire tax? Oh that's right, as the homeowner stated to the newspaper, we never thought it would happen to us.

And to Foreman 1923, how would you feel if you lived in that area, your house was on fire and the Dept was unavailable beacause they were fighting a fire on a property that did not and does not pay the taxes you pay? And it is not like we are talking big bucks here, it is 75 dollars a year which is 1.44 a week or .20 cents a day.

That's the trend of the Job Brother let's do more with less. Always loved that mentality of having do take on more things like EMS for the so called "Productiviy" argument. Then we turn around and they lay guys off and put rigs out of service. That makes sense!

Maybe it is because of selfish brothers who won't take brothers from another job who are getting laid off in order to keep their OT? That makes sense!

Instead of the department wasting money on tshirts, why don't they donate the money to a breast cancer research fund. Much better PR.

I think the concept is being lost on some departments that create special teams for FAST when it should be the function of aany/every FF instead of "special teams" that aren't always available.

In a large career department every FF can be FAST. In smaller departments and most volunteer agencies it's treated like something special and not everyone gets the training.

The reason most Volunteer Depts set up a "special team" is that in Career Depts, you will not get a rig with all probies on it, there will be an officer and guys with years on the job riding with the probie. In a volunteer dept, as has been pointed out on numerous threads, you never know what you are getting. By setting up a standard to be a member of the RIT team, at least you know you will be getting some experienced firefighters. I agree that all members should be trained in RIT.

If it was a "Federal Investigation" I am sure people in the community knew about it. If charged, it would definitely be public info, regardless if he used an escape(?) to get out of it. If a Dept knowingly has a person who is involved in that and not under investigation, they should move swiftly to make him an ex member and notify the proper authorities.

How much would you save to remove the inhouse dispatchers, the inhouse mechanic, the paid administrative personnel for the district, and switch that funding over to career firemen?

You're already double taxing your district for services that are already provided by the county....

How do I sign up my department for an in house mechanic and administrative personnel? I didn't know the county covered that.
