Cool rig. I knew the Tappan Zee Bridge had fire apparatus at one time, but I never knew New York State Thruway Authority had 23 of these engines. Can anyone elaborate as to how these were staffed and deployed?

We have been told not to use brushes to wash the truck as it can harm the finish. What is the possibility that a master stream will damage the paint?

Totally false (except for them putting Batt 3 in service when one of the other Batt goes out of town).

Total BS. We have a busy, large enough sandbox of our own to worry about.
A battalion chief responds anytime more than one unit is toned out, In or Out of the city. Its basically the start of incident command and to protect the members. So yes, any units out for a duration of time need to be replaced on recalls, including the chief.
When we receive a call for mutual aid, 9 times out of 10, we are requested to the scene. Not just to cover the fire house. Sometimes on arrival, the incident commander asks the chief for advice.
So before you start spreading rumors, get the facts straight

Slow down there now. I am sure plenty of us can take that cash off your hands without having to fish it out of the toilet.
Ya i laugh at those shirts that i am sure they sell thousands of at like the Fire Expo in Long Island. Alot of "I fight what you fear" stuff. As been stated if you need the shirt to say you've been there, you probably haven't. Anyone ever notice it's always the XXXL guys who are wearing them?
Stay Safe out there.

Yes, "SECTMB" is totally CORRECT. The problem then was there was NO HEATED Cabs to ride inside of like today. In most cases there wasn't even a place to sit. I can tell you, "it really was no fun riding that back step in the middle of some Sub Zero night coming back from a job. Trying to hang on for dear life with turnout gear (as it was called) and gloves covered in ice with frozen hands under them. "They didn't tell that story on those T-shirts".
Then came those super hot humid days, and a totally different story. No nice cool air conditioned cabs to cool down in.
Take it from a guy who "DID" ride the back step. It really didn't take too long to realize, "this really isn't that much fun anymore'. To my Brothers out there that did ride the back step, "you know exactly what I'm talking about". For those that DIDN'T, "just be very thankful for the simple things you have today". And just try to remember, it's not that those guys that rode the back step were plain stupid. It's just that there was NO OTHER OPTION.

Another red light, green light 1, 2, 3 discussion....
If you use a blue light, don't drive like an a$$hole, period. If people want to pull over as a curtesy, terrific. If not, do not tailgate, do not flash your high beams, just deal with it. Regardless, you are to still obey all traffic laws. You are better off not using a light.
As for this new change in the law, I think it's great. Anything that's meant to further protect emergency services is ok in my book.

If you have lights "all over your personal vehicle" you have already broken the law.

boca1day liked a post in a topic by squadstuff in New Haven Ct Firefighter/Paramedic Results
New Haven has hired in excess of 125 firefighters over the past 3 years. Some were paramedics.
There are plans to put additional ALS Emergency Units in service. This prompted the Medic list to be created. All Medics are trained as Firefighters.
A condition of employment is to obtain med control and maintain it for 10 years. All EMTs must keep the card for their career.
Currently there are enough medics to allow rotation off the Units and on to fire companies but not enough to activate additional Units.
Assignments in New Haven are payroll positions. Your assignment is not a guarantee which rig you will be working on.
When I was a Captain in NHFD there were assigned drivers & tillermen. The others did a day & night tour on the pipe, day / night on the hydrant and day / night on the truck. And if a driver was off the back step firefighters rotated driving. This kept all skills fresh because if you were detailed to another station you could be filling any of those roles. But it is the Captains decision who rides where based on the needs of the Department.
As far as the pay goes, there are 4 pay grades. Recruit pay is low. You get a raise after 6 months then yearly until top step.
Once off probation you are can work overtime and get acting Medic pay when working in that capacity. Plus pay stipends.
I retired 4 years ago as a Batt. Chief with 33 years OTJ. So the info I post is accurate and not hearsay.

Lets hope that the BFC and the union can work thing out so no one has to worry about being laid off. In the meantime, I am sure that someone will monitor the situation and report back shoud thing take a turn for the worse. Until then, let's not speculate as things can get out of control.

boca1day liked a post in a topic by 61MACKBR1 in Yonkers Debating Between Single Axle And Tandem Axle For New Rescue
Back in 2000, when YFD Rescue 1 was recommissioned, I suspect that the amount of equipment that YFD originally thought that they would need to carry on the 2000 ALF Heavy Duty Single Axel Rescue Rig (now Rescue 2) probably ended up being a lot different than what they actually needed to carry, 5 to 6 years later. (Such as Water Rescue Equipment, HAZMAT and USAR equipment, extrication equipment, cold water suits, medical gear, traffic signage, back boards, portable lights, ropes, and much more ). So when YFD ordered the current 2007 ALF Tandem Axel Heavy Duty Rescue, they went with a Tandem-Axel rig. With a larger load, there is a greater need for more weight distribution thus, more axles.
Also, in my opinion, Tandem Axel HD Fire Rescue Rigs are safer than a marginal or max'd out single axle rear end. They (Tandem Axel) provides the added benefit of double the braking and greatly improved stability. Wheels can be adjusted for your configuration to accomodate turning radius's that are equal to that of a single axle, but again, the configuration of the vehicle needs to be narrowed down. Once that is done, any apparatus manufacturer can do a detailed weight analysis of whatever particular design any Fire Department requires, once they know what that department is looking for.
As a side note, all of the FDNY Rescue apparatus are all Tandem-Axel rigs (albeit 'Walk Thru's), thus maybe another reason why YFD, in 2007, went with the Tandem Axel rig (PS - YFD's 1961 Mack B Rescue Rig was a Single Axel/Walk Thru Rescue Truck)
Just my two cents

As our cities spill out into the suburbs, the suburbs to the countryside, coupled with the increase demand for emergency services and the declining number of volunteers, this IMO is going to be a growing trend among many communities over the next few decades. Going from an all volunteer department to a combination department has a lot of benefits, such as decreased response times and increased manpower. And, as communities grow, along with the need for more services, I wouldn't doubt that you'll see more career staff being added to fill out an engine or add staff to a second.
But, one thing that must be remembered as you add career personnel to the ranks is that the chief and the town have to remember that there are volunteers, and they need to have integrated training with the career staff so both parties will work cohesively on the fire ground. With that, an atmosphere needs to be created where everyone will get along, train together, play together, and go home together.

When it is out of town, it's almost as available the rest of the week when sadly in many departments, their are no members available to respond or as is the policy in many depts, the engine goes first, so by the time the ladder arrives, it is blocked out by hose.

This is not a new topic...but it hits close to home. I live in a 6 story, fire-proof multiple dwelling. This means...there are no fire escapes. If a fire were to occur on the 4th, 5th or 6th floors, a resident could potentially be blocked from their front door....the only means of egress. Whats the other way out? An aerial ladder. What good is that aerial ladder when its 20 minutes away at a parade? Maybe farther! My local FD has several engines and one, single ladder. Why does that ladder, the only means of high-rise rescue, EVER leave town? To win a trophy? To show off? To look cool?
If there were ever a tragedy, I'd expect those responsible to see criminal charges.
Im all for parades. Im all for tradition. Our volunteers give time and these kind of events are joyful and proper compensation for dedication. We should have fun and maintain freindly relationships with neighboring dept's through social activities.
However, our first mission is life-safety. If a town has 3 or 4 engines and 1 ladder....um....the ladder doesnt go to parades. Smarten up, send an engine.
There wasnt a need to include a dept. name, because this dept. is not unique. The list of offenders is long, sadly.

Those "support" soldiers still have to qualify on the range, get thru chemical training and then while driving supply trucks they have had to fight, some being killed, other injured and some captured. They are placed in support rolls because that's where they are needed and that's where they will perform best, not because they are unwilling or unable to do it!
