Velcro, as I've already stated I'm no longer with Arlington. I left going on three years now. But no never did air my concerns with the commissioners. As it is I felt it would only make matters far worse than they already were. I did however voice my concerns a good number of times to the officer's. And hate to put and say it this way, fell on deaf ears. Almost every volunteer fire organization is either in whole or in part very political, as well as have their cliques and have and play with their favorites. Which this point alone in my honest opinion is why volunteer enrollment and retention efforts have been such a difficult task. It's already been stated by the Chief noted in the BOFC meeting minutes the disappointment in the efforts of Recruitment and Retention personnel that were hired several months prior. Unless and until they make the necessary changes internally from company politics, favoritism and so on, then why bother hire and pay people to do something the officers really need and should take ownership of? This is why I truly feel this grant money is being abused by this district.

The only way to determine if the grantee is following the grant award is to review the approved grant application for that agency and compare it to their actual performance. So you have to find a copy of the final grant award for that agency that includes the final and approved application.
It does seem odd that they'd use the grant money for firefighter training but not EMT. But you'd have to look at the application to know if it is OK or not.
Same for your other issues. If the application included hiring a retention specialist and an advertising program, then it's OK as well.

    "Free"....Maybe.
The DOH has a specific maximum amount that it will reimburse the training facility with, on a per student bases, if the student passes and their agency has a #.
The training facility is allowed to charge up front & reimburse you if you pass. The training facility may also charge more than the reimbursable rate.
So it might be free and it might not be.

This seems more like an issue of priorities. I have seen fire departments that have EMS duties favor Firefighter training and even responses. I was once told by a senior member that I despite my being an EMT, and despite the department paying for my refreshers, that I was not bound to respond on EMS calls, even if I was in the building. I only HAD to go on fire calls. Why anyone would take this attitude is beyond me.

In terms of the EMT payments, you are correct. As long as you are a member of an agency with a DOH number, and you pass the class, the class is "free", at least to you and your agency.

Hey everyone! Just thought I would start a list of EMT-B here and around the Hudson Vally for anyone who is looking to refresh or looking for an EMT-B class.

I think you misunderstood this. Two discussion points: CPR as a requirement for a drivers license **OR** CPR as a requirement for graduation.
No one mentioned a drivers license requirement for graduation, and that's not what this topic is even about..
  10. EMTBrian liked a post in a topic by x635 in What Does "Expedite The Medic" Mean?
Occasionally, I'll hear the term "Expedite the medic".
What does that mean? Does the medic put the truck into jet powered mode? Drive even faster and less cautiously?
Wouldn't it be more prudent to say "Advise the medic that the patient is complaining of chest pain, and is pale, cool, and diaphoretic with a pulse of 50". (Not every first responder is equipped at first with a BP cuff). At least the medic will have an idea what they are going to.
When that term is used by a unit on scene, the dispatcher or field unit should be asked why.
Should the term "Expedite" be thrown out of our vocabulary?

When I was in high school my freshman year we learned CPR in gym class

EXDC, I don't think there is any problem with EmStar. I checked out their website, researched the company some. By the looks of it seems this company may soon become a larger
Commercial Ambulance Company than that of Transcare. Advantages of EmStar, obviously newer buses, while Transcare desperately needs to upgrade their clunkers.

I agree with wiscems, have some follow up questions. Definitly shows interest. The question I always ask is what is something to the extent of what are the next steps from here. This hopefully will get you a time table of when they are planning on conducting more interviews, appointing someone, or getting back in contact with you. This way you know if they will be calling you when you get back home or two weeks later.
I also set up an email address that I use primarily for job interviews. It is professional (first name last name) instead of your common email that may be a little less formal or professional.
I also was told that when they (interviewers/employer/supervisors) call you not to answer the phone. Let it go to voicemail. Listen to the voicemail. This may give you some clues as to why they are calling so you can prepare yourself. And call them back when you are in a quiet place, with a pen and paper, and ready to answer questions. This way when they want you to write something down you don't have to fumble around or your not in a place that sounds like you have a rock concert in the back ground. Also, with this, make sure that your voice mail is professional for when it rings through.
If possible, before the interview, try and find out how many people will be interviewing you. Make a packet for each of these interviewers with a copy of your application, your resume, cover letter, and any other items you may need (copy of your EMT car) and put it in a nice folder or envelope. This way you can give them a copy when you start your interview, even though they may have a copy. And always have an extra copy in case there is more than the anticipated interviewers there and if not you can always use that copy for yourself as if you planned it that way.
And finally, try and be as relaxed as possible, while still staying professional. Going to an interview is stressful anyway you look at it. But, if you are well prepared, well dress, and confident in yourself it will be a much better experience for you and it will be noticed in a positive way by your interviewers. This is not to be interpreted, though, to be overconfident and cocky.

Good advice above. Would also add not to be shy about previous experience. Even if you only did a ride along somewhere include that. Something you may think is not worth mentioning sometimes clues the interviewer to the fact that you are genuinely interested in the field and that it is not just a "job" to you. Would also add prepare some follow up questions. It is very awkward at the end if they ask if you have any questions and you say no. Some good ones I have used are "What are your favorite parts about working here?" or "What is the next step in the process?". It shows you are interested in them (who doesn't like talking about themselves?), that you are prepared and as a bonus you may get some extra info about the job. Good luck!

I think you'll find that almost every EMT instructor agrees with you. They will also agree there are probably 30-40 other topics worthy of additional instruction. So the question is are you willing to take an EMT course that is 600 hours long instead of 200?
No? You're not? That's too long for an EMT course? Well then, I guess we better cut back to the bare minimums so we appease everyone.
EMT Instructors don't have a lot of flexibility. It's not like college professors who can tailor the course to suit their interests or their audience. It's a national curriculum, administered by the state, and course sponsors can't afford to add much to it without incurring additional expenses and pissing off the students.

Huh? So you are basically saying that Zimmerman is guilty of something, anything? SYG and profiling have next to nothing to do with one another, so trying to say if it's not one it's the other, shows that you're trying to find some reason, any reason that Zimmerman is guilty. To continue to fight this verdict is to take exception to our system of justice. At it's most basic core, the prosecution could not prove that George Zimmerman killed Martin in a manner other than self-defense, beyond a reasonable doubt. The "beyond a reasonable doubt", is the only place this case has wiggle room, and I doubt in the long run that most Americans would think changing that clause would be in our best interests?
  17. EMTBrian liked a post in a topic by JM15 in Zimmerman-Dispatcher
Not to get even further off topic but George Zimmerman even after all of this went out of his way to aid a family of four in an MVA last week... Not saying he is a hero but he sure seems like a stand-up guy. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/07/22/george-zimmerman-rescued-man-from-truck-crash-last-week-police-say/
I have heard of police dispatchers having motorists following drunk drivers etc before so its not a rare occurence. I don't think a dispatcher has the legal authority to direct you to do something. The dispatcher even said "Sir you don't have to do that" not Sir Don't do that, yes legally there is a difference in the wording. Kind of like may and shall.
  18. EMTBrian liked a post in a topic by antiquefirelt in Zimmerman-Dispatcher
Maybe it's less clear to some that the way the dispatcher worded it, was in no way instruction. The phrase was "you don't need to do that", basically an acknowledgement that he was following and that it may increase the level of danger. While the difference may seem trivial I submit that it is in fact very distinct and is why there is little to no scrutiny of the dispatchers' role.

Best way to go about answering this question with reasonable intelligence would be to establish what power if any a 911 Dispatcher has, from a "police" stand-point. Obviously the dispatcher doesn't want to be held liable or responsible for putting the caller in danger, and certainly wouldn't be encouraging or expecting the caller to follow Martin soley for that reason of possibly putting himself
in harms way. What the caller can see visually is all the dispatcher can go off of and document the information caller is conveying to the dispatcher. That would be my guess. The dispatcher instructed Zimmerman not to follow probably for this very reason.
