The police package and special service Tahoe come with heavy duty radiators and oil coolers in addition to stiffer suspension, power supply wiring to front and rear, and skid plate protection underneath standard. Previous vehicles were Denali's and we have had problems with wear and tear on the suspensions. This vehicle replaces a 2003.

The Patterson Fire Department, in Putnam County New York, has taken delivery of their new Chiefs vehicle following conversion by Specialty Warning Systems in Danbury, CT. Designated 22-1-2, the 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe (Police Package) functions as the department chief’s response vehicle and on scene command post.
Similar to many of the vehicles we fit out today, the lighting package is 100% Whelen LED based incorporating a Freedom lightbar with dual LED alleys & takedowns, four LINZ6s behind the front grille, Mirror Beams on each side view mirror and 4 “ round fog light LEDs that contain both red warning and white driving light modules. Red / white M4s were installed on each outer corner, LAW Hideaways in the taillights and an Outer Edge Pillar on each rear side of the cargo door. A solid state headlight flasher and Powercall siren with two 100m watt speakers behind the front grille, complete the warning system. Two additional split color LINZ6s were installed in the upper cargo door to provide supplemental lighting to the rear when the cargo door is in the raised position. Four Strip Lite compartment lights provide work area lighting within the cargo compartment while the two perimeter lights installed on the rear bumper operate with the OEM reverse lights and in conjunction with the cargo lighting to supply on scene ground safety.
The Extendo Bed sliding carrier provides storage for turnout gear, SCBA, handlight, Knox Box, scene command supplies, hand tools, portable extinguishers and T.I. camera. Two of the three department radios and a full complement of portable radio chargers were also installed on the carrier so as to be available when the unit is collapsed into the vehicle or fully extended.
The 24 inch Havis console contains all three department radios, the Powercall siren, Whelen lighting controller, storage box, dual cup holders, armrests and an additional portable radio charger.
Exterior graphics include gold leaf striping and lettering, white reflective side striping and a red & yellow safety chevron on the rear bumper. A Weather Tech hood deflector, side window rain guards and mud flaps were also added to the outside of the vehicle.
In the coming weeks, look for the video on this vehicle on our YouTube channel
Specialty Warning Systems extends it’s thanks to the Patterson FD for their confidence in us to provide their Chief’s new response vehicle, and we look forward to working with them on additional projects in the years to come.

The oldest and most established team in the state is the NYS DEC Forest Rangers team. They were operating a Type 2 team but with recent retirements I'm not sure they're still organized that way. Though primarily wildfire oriented, they do all-hazard responses lately.
NYC has a Type 1 FEMA USAR task force consisting of FDNY and NYPD but they don't have a consolidated IMT. FDNY has a Type 2 All-Hazards IMT that was established about 4-5 years ago. They may be working toward type 1 designation but I'm not sure they've completed that process yet. The NYPD may be in the process of developing something but it is not yet operational.
NYS has a Type 2 IMT that was established in 2004.
Several counties in western NY have established the "Western NY Type 3 IMT" and have met or are meeting all the requirements for FEMA designation as a type 3 AHIMT.
The State OEM is currently developing five regional type 3 all-hazards IMT's following the federal model. These are going to be aligned with the SOEM regions (exclusive of NYC).
Suffolk County, Westchester County, and Orange County are all working on county-level IMT's but they're still developing. Nassau County may too be working on a county level team but they're a bit further behind (started later).
New Jersey has a type 2 team but it is primarily wildfire oriented. I'm not sure of regional or local efforts in the Garden State.

    Nice shots!
That's pretty much the half of it as Ladder44 said.
Waterbury is one of New England's many old factory/mill cities that boomed during WWII and through the 1950's, but slowly declined and went downhill afterwards when the industry moved out. It is currently the 5th largest city in Connecticut and is very similar to the city of Bridgeport, CT if anyone is familiar with it. Waterbury has an immense amount of vacant factories, industries, and many 3-deckers(multi-family houses).
The Waterbury Fire Department is generally a very bust urban FD. They usually run around 18,000 emergency calls annually(with Medical I believe). They currently operate out of 8 Fire Stations, and operate a Fire Apparatus fleet of 8 Engines, 3 Trucks, 1 Rescue, 1 Haz-Mat. Unit, 1 Collapse Unit, 1 Battalion, and 1 Deputy Chief. The Rescue(Rescue 9) is cross-staffed by members of Engine 1, thus, when the Rescue goes on runs, they respond as Rescue Engine 1.
Waterbury doesn't usually get jobs this big, and usually if they do, they handle them on their own. It's rare when M/A is called to the scene.

Waterbury is big mix of ghetto, sub-urban and rural area, they have a busy FD with 8-9 eng co's (driver/officer and 2) and 3 truck co's 2 rear mount straight sticks and a mid mount tower (again driver/officer and 2) and they have a heavy rescue (driver/officer/3?) they cover 28sq miles with population of 110,000ish, this is a great busy dept, its roughly the size of yonkers but half the population, when they call mutal aid you know its a big incident, i live 20 miles north and can see the header.

First off - these pics pretty much suck as they were taken with my cell phone that I hate more than anything on earth, plus I was pretty busy.
JHK (Dover FD) was dispatched for a house fire yesterday around 1700ish. Additional calls reported a subject with injuries, poss burns. First due crews stretched to the finished section of a raised ranch basement and quickly knocked down the fire, containing it to a very packed room. The resident was removed via ambulance to a landing zone and flown out with severe 3rd degree burns from the waist down.
Mutual Aid was provided at the scene by Pawling, Wassaic, and Union Vale. Amenia stood by in Dover 1.
Standby Companies also responded to and handled an active chimney fire with Dover's ladder.
Later in the evening, while we were still at the house fire, we were dispatched for a rollover accident on Rt 343 (basically 100 yards from my house...of course). Mutual aid stand by companies responded along with our rescue engine to find a nice Mustang upside down in the roadway with one male with severe head injuries. A medevac was requested as well, and the patient also flown out. Dover and Millbrook remained on scene for traffic control for some time after.
It was no doubt, a very hectic night in the Harlem Valley, with serious incidents handled well by all responding companies. Good work Gentlemen.

At approx 2220hrs on 5/14/12, NYSP and DCSO responded to a reported Burglary In Progress/Home Invasion. One of the initial arriving NYSP entered the residence, encountered one suspect with a sawed off rifle who assaulted the Trooper WITH the rifle.
Suspect became human Swiss Cheese and pronounced dead on the scene. Four other suspects caught after a manhunt, arrested, and arraigned.
Good riddance, God bless the responding officers, glad they are all ok. I am proud to work and know many of the members of those agencies that responded.

Your average brick in a brick house will expose you to more radiation a year than several chest x-rays. Each brick is roughly 7mrem/yr while a chest x-ray is roughly 1mrem/scan.
Had a load of bricks gone past the sensor, im sure that too would have set off the detector.
Im sure the reason why they cant bring them into underground places or places with high stone/brick/masonry is all of the radioactive elements naturally in the ground or included in the stone building material.
I dare anyone to take a scintillation detector and hold it up to any random brick, I am sure the radiation levels would be much higher than you expected.
I work with a form of radiation in one way or another almost every day, I am not afraid if it, what does amaze me however is how misinformed we as first responders are.

Not if his child was born here.
People do dumb stuff. He didn't go out to the bar. He ran an errand. Not excusable but the details matter here. Was it 5 minutes or 30? Was he remorseful or blaming the child?
When I was 6 or 7 my parents tasked me with watching my brother while ducked into a store. 2 minutes later they came out to see a by stander catching by brother in his stroller that I'd let roll down the hill towards a busy NYC intersection.
In all of my injured child calls it was one of the least significant scald burns that was most disturbing. The most serious were precipitated by the actions of dumb adults but never with malice. Usually I spend more time reassuring the parent. Some people just really don't know any better.

Maybe the fire service can honor the memory of Captain Sullivan and his family and use this horrific tragedy as an example of why residential sprinklers are needed. Politicians would be hard pressed to ignore all of the coverage of this fire, as well as the fire in Stamford over Christmas that killed 5. The Sullivan Family residential sprinkler bill.
  25. fireboyny liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Carmel Fatal Fire-How To Prevent Another Tragedy?
New 12 was just reporting that the son woke up to his father yelling the the house was on fire. The son crawled down the stairs, made it into the garage where he pulled a string to open the garage door. Then the father was trying to get everyone else out, they were trapped when the house collapsed. It was previously reported that the collapse occured within 10 minutes of the FD's arrival.
The timeline does not quite make sense...but the investigation may determine that.
My big question is, did the detectors work and why did the family have so little time?
The bigest concern, you can clearly see on news 12 footage the damaged lightweight truss floors. These assemblies fall apart in minutes, everyone in the fire service knows this, but we did not fight hard to stop them and the developpers fought to get them. In codes class we were taught that 90% of them are not installled to code (making it even worst). But the fire service has only pushed to get so signs.
This was a relativly new home (built since the state code was passed in 1984) And the code still does not require home sprinklers. This house would still be standing with them and when they built it, the added cost would have only been a few thousand dollars.
The fire service needs to put its money where its mouth is and fight for sprinklers and against light weight construction.
