Just wanted to extend a thank you to JBE... I had the pleasure by his invitation to see the main FDNY communications office at Metrotech in Brooklyn the other day while on a visit to FDNY HDQTRS. It was a very impressive sight and nice to meet and greet all the guys and gals who work where all the magic begins... Everyone was very professional and a great work atmosphere. Most people don't get to see what a difficult and stressful job it is to be a fire alarm dispatcher and these guys made it look like the rest of the world is moving in slow motion. These people are just not credited enough for the work they do behind the scenes; its truely incredible Just wish they'd give you guys a kitchen!!!
Thanks again Jimmy and enjoy vacation

this accident was nothing like the bus accident in the bx a few years ago....that extrication was far more involved than this one the roof of the bus was basically can opened...with countless traumas...and that was a very technical extrication....this was your simple stablilize and remove the passengers like bull said. So i agree with him extrication 101. just because its a bus it doesnt mean it has to be a technical operation. With your size up you can determine the extent of the operation. you can have passenger car accidents that can be way more involved than this one, would you call that one extrication 101 because its a passenger car rather than a bus? Every run is different and nothing is the same

I agree also. I also think that if your parent was kill in the line duty you should be able to have the job if you want, once you complete the background and physical bunch of my friends are getting screwed by the city and the judge

So about $3.25 a square foot. I thought I read this house was about 7660 square feet (round up to say 7700x $3.25= $25,025. With a 30 year mortgage that turns out to just $69.51 before interest. Figure about $75 to 80 dollars a month to provide sprinklers in the house. Maybe they should have put them inside instead of watering the grass

Let me clear this up for you being an FDNY dispatcher.. When you called 911, you were connected with a civilian call taker working for nypd unified call taking system.. This person takes all the information, important and not, and is SUPPOSED to connect the caller to the appropriate agency for the type of emergency... Unfortunately the system is extremely flawed as you have seen first hand.. The person that called you back was probably from FDNY EMS. trying to get the correct information..
This is what we have been fighting Bloomburg and his administration over for years... Millions of dollars pumped into a system that is dangerous to the public.....

In my opinion fire parades should not be about the trophy I mean who really cares about it. It should be for the enjoyment of the public especialy the kids. I think there should be a requirement that you must have your lights on. The trophy is nice for about a day then it does onto a shelf and is just another thing to dust. Put the lights on, give the siren an occasional yelp and a tug on the air horn. Seeing the wonderment and excitment on a kids face is enough trophy for me!

I hear you loud and clear! This is the trouble that we face. While the Bush Justice Dept. initially filed this suit at the behest of the Vulcan Society, it is the Obama Justice Dept. that is pushing this agenda considerably further.
You're absolutely right about republican's assaulting our rights and pensions. It's a pretty serious double edged sword.
This is going to sound like a bold statement, but it might just be a reality for me. I'd rather spend time fighting to keep my benefits than watch the job I love turn to sh!t because we're bringing people through the door who don't deserve to be here because they couldn't put in a lick of effort.
I'm not doing this to get rich, not to say I don't need to earn a decent living. I do this because I love it and I don't want it to turn into a place I just go to every day to work. I did that once and while it paid a lot better, I'm never going back!

These are Palm Beach Fire-Rescue trucks, staffed by Firefighter-Paramedics, not ambulances. Not all of them are being reduced to a 2 man crew, but many are. The Firefighters union has publicly stated that service will suffer, which of course it will, so your statement about "everyone involved" is also incorrect.
How is it that you can be down there in Florida and get this so wrong, and I can be up here in New York, and learn all of this in a 3 minute Google search? Why did I strongly suspect after reading your post that it was factually incorrect and that if I did a Google search my suspicion would be verified? Why do you think the situation in Palm Beach is at all relevant to what is now happening in Yonkers?

Why would someone who lists themselves as a photo enthusiast even come with the statement that says PD FD or EMS should not ride for free. Ask your dad what he thinks. Since you possess zero tools to help in a situation perhaps you should learn some first then see what you have when the stuff really starts to roll down hill, actually you should hope you have one of us on YOUR train to bail you out.
  16. BBBMF liked a post in a topic by M' Ave in NYC hiding report on 911 system failures?
This isn't news to anyone who works in one of the three (FD, PD, EMS) response agencies in NYC. Ever since the UCT program began, the quality of the information we receive has declined. This coupled with the Bloomberg administration's push to lower response times has negatively impacted our operations. Companies are turned out with little more than an address and then we are, hopefully, given additional information over the air while responding. The idea here is, get them on the road, then fill in the missing info. Stupid...we need all the time we can to get ready, begin size-up and prepare for what might greet us at the box location.
Initially, the UCT program really cut the legs off of the dispatchers. That has since improved with the program of the UCT call taker conferencing in a FD dispatcher, but it's not as good as it used to be. We have some really good dispatchers on this job, real old school guys who know the job and the boro they work in. To hear a guy give turn by turn (Beef of Redlight and others, some of you'll know who they are) directions into a box for a re-locator from out of boro is pretty impressive. Some people in the Bronx CO know the boro like the back of their hand without a map insight. I'm sure this is true for the other boro's as well.
For the Mayor and his cronies, this is all a numbers game with the hopes of reducing companies or staff or ambulance tours. They've done nothing to improve operations. All they've accomplished is hollow, meaningless numbers that don't tell the real story.

When (not if) the rig is involved in a crash, I want a solid bumper infront. Their is no way that this bumper is atttached to the frame structure so that its crash worthy.
Also willing to bet, that a very minor tap or even a minor contact with the ground (as when pulling into a steep driveway) will fold this bumper right up into the front of the rig.
And if you need to tow it or pull it out you better not secure to it.

Besides the silly commentary from the hoohoo's taking the video; granted the PD kept the situation in check, nobody, should be getting anywhere near a burning car. The gases being given off by a vehicle and dumpster fires are worse to breathe than some residential house fires. There's also too many components ready to let go in cars, too many things that will blow up in your face to get even remotely close without full bunker gear! If it takes out another car, oh well, it is just a car! and will be replaced. eyes aren't replaced when something blows up in your face!
I may have swept the car from the other side as well just to push anything burning on the ground away from the other cars. Not a major problem but obviously if the car was fully engulfed, pushing at it from the other side may be a good idea.

From my visits to the Fire training center, it seems to work for the time being. WCFTC has many great fire instructors who are able to use what they have, in addition to their own personal experience and knowledge to train new and old firefighters how to get the job done. All the vehicles are housed inside the buildings and granted it may be a little tight, that really does not matter. 60 control does an excellent job receiving and dispatching runs and the instructors are producing.
We're in a tight economy and we don't need to start planning projects which there is no money to allocate towards. You left, why do you care so much...Come back and help fix it if it's really bothering you.

Please don't ever say it's ok to stick the nozzle of a dry chem extinguisher or anyone extinguisher near a car fire without the proper gear. Most times it can be held in check with a dry chem. But whats the point..ITS A CAR...and the one time you think it's ok is going to be the time you get hurt because something unforseen happens! There are many components which pop and blow in a car and sometimes, small fires escalates quickly, and thats when guys get hurt. What happens when you're up on the car trying to knock it with a dry chem and you don't notice the gas line is burning and now your shoes are on fire?

    YAWN!!!!
I believe you meant to say "you're flip flopping"... I digress...
I'm not sure where I flip flopped. Was it when I indicated that the current apparatus has somewhere in the area of one mile of supply line and then drew in the fact that another station that is 1.7 miles away (google maps) probably has a similar amount of supply line. Between KFD and BHFD less than two miles apart, AND the fact that I'm unaware of any driveways that are two miles long in the area, if you can name a logical reason for making a two mile lay in the Town of Bedford I'd love to hear it.
Or is the "flop" coming when you don't know that a modern quint carries a similar amount of supply line as an engine and it would be logical, even fair to the tax payers who are footing the bill, to eliminate an engine when acquiring a quint? It would appear that KFD is looking at a Smeal quint. Coincidental to this conversation, I'd offer that I worked off a Smeal quint for several years and can comfortably say that it will carry 1000-1250 feet of supply line without a problem.
The way that fire districts in the NY metro area choose to equip their fleet's has little to do with necessity and plenty to do with irrational school play amongst individuals who are more interested in saying they were on the apparatus committee than they are with providing the taxpayer with great fire protection. KFD is merely collateral damage in what has been a years long mission for me to point this out to those who continue to believe that a problem doesn't exist. This conversation will pop up again when someone in Mount Pleasant decides to replace their tower with yet another over redundant tower... OR better yet finds a way to add a quint to sit next to their tower like Hawthorn and Somers did not long ago.

Facts in this case are very subjective... It would be tough to objectively argue that KFD needs an aerial device.
600ft vs 1000 ft we're splitting hairs... E116 carries 4000+ feet of 3in and E115 and E117 each carry 1800+ feet of LDH. With a split lay of E116's 3in and the 3600+ feet on the other pumpers AND the 600 feet on the tanker we're talking over a mile of hose. Assuming they could get all the rigs out the door in time to establish contineous water supply and mount an attack, there is enough hose to stretch 85 percent of the way from Katonah FD to Bedford Hills FD where 3 more class A apparatus, a mini pumper, a tower ladder and another heavy rescue are sitting with another mile or so of supply line. I think they're covered.
KFD is another department in Westchester that is adding more resources than it's members can staff. It's never going to end... A decade from now everyone will have their own aerial device and the vast majority of them won't have a clue how to perform truck company operations because each department will only catch one or two jobs a year where the rig is used properly and the crew actually performs truck work. For the number of fires in Northern Westchester, the region could use to eliminate 10 or more of the 30+ aerial devices in the area. The county certainly doesn't need more.
On the other hand, I'm glad that KFD is getting the needed renovations to their station as well as an opportunity to build a training facility near home. Anything that adds to the skill and training of fire crews will most certainly increase the chances of a positive outcome at the fire scene. Training puts out fires and sends everyone home safely. Apparatus is just a tool they use along the way.

I've been in the game long enough to look at a duck and know that it'll quack. Tanker 6 has a 2000gpm pump and I'd put money on it that it's got 1000+ feet of supply line. They've got 3 other class A pumpers as well. Add a quint to the mix and you're talking about 5 class A apparatus along with a heavy squad and a mini pumper....
THIS IS NOT A KFD rant, it just happens to be where I hopped on my soap box today... Look at the incident alerts on this website for northern Westchester... You see departments sending 1 and 1 mutual aid to another department and then requesting standby coverage in their own quarters while 4 or more front line apparatus sit idle... You can insert any number of northern Westchester departments into my rant including my own former department, Millwood. Chappaqua, Briarcliff, Armonk, Pleasantville, the Tri-Village gang, the list goes on and on where departments have 6 or more pieces of apparatus, often times redundant in their own department or certainly with their neighbors and they can never get more than a handful of it out the door at any given time. This is a waste of taxpayer money.
