For Christ's sake - from what I read on here - beggars can't be choosers! It may be old(ish)...it may be dirty...it may be from MT Vernon...but if it helps out the guys in Hartsdale, so be it...Good for them...and good on MV for loaning it...and of course - excellent for the residents of the township that may need it for rescue!
Borrowed needs, while not unique needs, are better than no needs....aren't they?
How did it work at last night J O B? I imagine well as we have not read anything here about it...

Many of you might be wondering what the Outreach Program is for. Please allow me to elaborate on what the purpose of the program is for. A committee meets up and decides on what places need AED's. Currently AED's have been donated to Charles Cook Pool for the Town of Cortlandt summer camp, to the new Sensory Gym at FGL elementry school. If you know of a place that needs an AED please PM me and I will greatfully pass it on to the committee.

  8. BigBuff liked a post in a topic in ACLU publishes guide to photographers' (and videographers') rights
Firstly, let me say that I'm not a big fan of the ACLU...... However, occasionally, they do serve a useful purpose for the average law abiding US citizen. And this IMO, this is one of those times..... I can tell you from first-hand experience that some Law Enforcement Officers get a little carried away when enforcing the laws, one being the ability to photograph in public. I had just been laid off from my hi-tech job after 30 yrs and needed to clear my head and decided to do something to make me relax which to me, is taking scenic photos.... I was going to try to take a unique photo of the Mid-Hudson Bridge from a park in Highland. It was going to be a full moon and I had intended to get a shot of the bridge with the moon rising over it. In case you don't know, the moon rises rapidly as it breaks the horizon so I had my camera on my tripod with my remote shutter release in my hand, waiting for the moon to appear. At the instant the moon started to crest, I was illuminated from behind. I then heard a muffled "Excuse me" from a PA speaker..... Without looking around, I knew exactly what the lights were and what was next. I was asked to step to the car which I did, and then was told by a NYS Trooper " You should know better" To which I replied "Excuse me? He then went on to tell me it's illegal to photograph bridges and that I of all people (I had a FD shirt on) should know better. He then went on to tell me that there were signs on the bridge all-over forbidding photography and that I needed permission to do what I was doing....... At this point I said that I'm not doing anything wrong and I'm NOT going to argue with him. I told him that the only signs on the bridge were the signs that asked if you were going to jump, call this number first. That really pissed me off because now, he is making things up and lost all his credibility. I was never ID'd but just told that I had to break down my equipment and leave the park I was in (legally I might add). So, what did I do? What were my choices? I knew that I was DOING NOTHING WRONG, and had every right to do what I was doing where I was doing it. BUT, I also knew that he could arrest me for no valid reason and that the onus would be on me later to prove my innocence. I think you call that "intimidation"..... Should I push it and end up spending the night with the Bro's and Ho's in the Ulster County Jail? And then have my wife pissed off at me because she has to defend me in court. Or do I walk away? At the time, I was so pissed I just packed up my equipment and left which IMO, was the WRONG thing to do. Later that night while I was still fuming, I ran into a friend who is a Trooper, I explained to him what happened and his response was " So, go back tomorrow night..... It's a different tour and he won't be working" So, I did, and took the photo below.......

Crime Cop and HFD219 - I did not post this to create a conflict. I have to say that If you were a photographer like me who photographs a lot, and kept up on what other photographers do and are going through, and didn't have a tin to flash, you would have a different view...... There are numerous cases like what happened to me where individuals are harassed for no legitimate reason. If the person is truly suspicious, presenting a hazard, or breaking the law, then fine ......If not, leave them be and move on to finding someone who is....... If this keeps going on, you might as well poke my F#$%*& eyes out because there will be nothing legal for me to photograph and I as well of the rest of the world might as well be blind.... The terrorists are still winning.....
and BTW, I'm in favor of drug testing welfare recipients....... Why should I pay for their drug habit?

100% agree-This thread is only bringing up the fatal remarks- lets bring up the "real hero" remarks now. Where the person's actions were successful- or helped out the people in escaping, I know there ARE some out there.
Texas Dad Saves Family In a Fire
Yes, he may have gotten severe burns, but he was successful on his goal, at that very moment.
I know there was another one a few weeks ago in Port Chester (?) where a mailman rushed in to save 2 elderly in a burning house, which I thought was amazing due to the fact he barely spoke english, and knew exactly what to do in the limited time he had.

    Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone can help me out. I'm looking for some good high quality pump panel pictures of newer apparatus that has the up and down levers to control the valves, as opposed to the kind where you pull the valve straight out, or the electric valves with the button or the wheel. Ideally I would like full res images, (with no shadows or glare). I know a lot of you take great pictures and if someone would let me use their picture of that kind of pump panel that would be great.
(feel free to PM me if you want more info before you give me your picture)
    Thanks!

Who's fault is that? We continue to place people on pedestals in the media for doing what they did. Off duty firefighters, cops, anyone willing to charge into a burning structure gets the hero treatment.

That certainly may be the case. But I personally won't vilify these bystanders for doing what they thought was right. They followed their instincts and a certain degree of human nature and attempted to help those in need, when no others could. I'm willing to bet that good Samaritans, over time, have done far, far more good than harm.

    SteveOFD, thanks from the insight.
wrx9514, thanks for posting from your perspective and giving us the insight as well.Sounds like it was a tough job. With all that was going on, it's hard hear all the radio traffic. But listening to the incident from dispstch until under control, it wasn't so smooth logistically. But that's just my opinion. Some of the resources requested should have been foreseen and dispatched immediately. Also, great photo.
Also, is there a cascade unit that was on scene? I forget if Briarcliff's rescue has one.
Thanks again guys for keeping this positive and constructive.

Yes, there was definitely a supply line running across Route 9.
This is what it looked like from our perspective. The smoke was visible from the County Airport too. Air traffic control noted the smoke from the tower.

Sorry we didn't get there sooner to catch the real action.

There's another good place called Calumet. They have several locations throughout the country, including NYC. Otherwise there's always ebay/amazon too. Don't sleep on SONY either, they're up and coming and bought out Minolta. For those of you who used Minolta 35 mm, your lenses actually work on the SONY DSLR's. If you're looking to spend that much, definitely encourage you to look into the 5D MK II. It's going to take a long time to outgrow that and the video quality is nothing short of superb. There's several tv shows (I.e. 24) and commercials that are shot on a 5D Mark II. As stated previously, I have the 7D and you can see samples of the quality. I constantly shoot at iso's from 100-3200 being that I'm primarily a sports photographer and shoot in low light and harsh conditions. I love my camera, it's a newer image sensor and has a better autofocus system than any other Canon camera (minus the forthcoming 1DX which will blow everything out of the water.)

The camera that I use is a Nikon coolpix p90. Personally I love the camera. I think it takes some good photos. I'm sure you have prob seen the photos I took with it under peekskill fire june 2011. The camera was about $500.00 2 years ago and I got it from bestbuy. So I would assume by now they prob have a newer version out.

like peterose said it depends on your budget, you can buy a top dollar body but if you dont match the glass to it you just pissed away money, your lenses are just as important as the body, i shoot w all nikon equipment so i cannot comment on canon personally but they as well make excellant equipment. for fire scenes i usually use my 70/200 2.8 on my d700, as well as my 50mm 1.8 on my d2xs, i have a few other lenses commonly used as well. feel free to check out my site to see some of my shots cdcphoto.com. as far as where to buy? Adorama is my first choice, ive used B&H as well both fine stores however i'd stay away from best buy circuit city and the likes they tend to be more expensive and dont offer the variety of kits and options. good luck with whatever you choose hope this helps

I have the Canon 7D as well as a Canon Power Shot SX130 IS. I use the Canon power shot in my turnout gear pocket and I break the Canon 7D out when we are standing around or there is no risk of damage. The 7D was definitely worth the investment. As for a flash mentioned above if you get a decent camera like the 7D and learn how to use it properly you do not need a flash 99% of the time. If you take a look at this gallery I took, I did not use a flash. It is all about finding the light you need and adjusting your camera settings. (It takes practice and patients).
