Nice that they were able to respond. What is the response time like?

Also this brings up an issue I often wonder about in Dispatch, which is interstate M/A. Despite being so close to each other we do very little responses across the line. We just redid our list for Tankers into Stamford that includes many CT & NY departments. I know there are fire boats in Stamford, Darien, Norwalk & I believe Greenwich. Which might have been close enough to respond, although that area might have required a small boat. I know that we don't have any kind of official list on our end, so it may be the same with NY just not being aware of what is available here.

Do they do this because they feel salty saying they, "beached their rig"?

You could pretty much replace "Westchester County" in the title of this thread with any other jurisdiction in the US and this would still be accurate.

It is with great sadness that I announce that a good friend, Rob Arons passed away today (Sunday, 4/21).
Rob was a volunteer Ex-Chief with Fairview FD and he previously worked at 60 Control as Operator 611.
Rob "retired" from 60 so he could move to Florida, where he then worked as a dispatcher for Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue.
One of Rob's friends said it all when he wrote:
    R.I.P. "Bubby"

I was under the impression that volunteer firefighters already could attend SUNY schools at little to no cost under a state program (with some restrictions).  Regardless, this, coupled with the fire service program and a state of the art training facility, is a huge boost for Ulster County and its citizens.

I think Mr. Suarino's letter is excellent, and sheds light on the types of crap that has been going on for years in volunteer departments. Every department I've ever been a part of has had a select group of obstructionist old guys who haven't rode the rigs in 15 years that just love to make life difficult for officers and firefighters that are trying to get things done and move the agency forward.

From being an outsider", I have observed over 15 years now how they are very meticulous and take great pride in keeping the apparatus in the best shape. It's part of the culture. Even Engine 9, one of the busiest engine companies in the nation, spotlessly shines. Another truck I photographed almost 10 year ago and then again last month and I couldn't tell the difference of wear.  It's true, they don't have to deal with the corrosive salt, deteriorated roadways, and rust, but I rarely see career departments (and some volunteer) in this area washing the motor, hand cleaning an aerial, waxing a truck, or even rinsing down apparatus when they are caked in salt in times other then with an annual inspection dinner coming up. Not only a pride thing, but also an important part of the maintenance of the truck.

Additionally, the Engineer for the pumpers, and Apparatus Operator for the ladders, USAR's, and other specialty vehicles, is a promotional rank. So there is  a person specifically charged with taking care of the rig on each shift, as opposed to it being an assignment for the day.

Recently losing 110 lbs and developing healthy habits, I have become passionate for health and fitness as well as an advocate for firefighter, ems, and law enforcement health and wellness. As a health coach and in the process of obtaining my  personal trainer certificate, I would like to share fitness ideas with others. What are members doing to obtain optimal health? Cardio? Weight training? Both? How much time do you dedicate to working out? What about diet? What are you eating? Do your departments have exercise facilities or gym memberships? Do we overlook our own health and wellbeing as we care for others?

Saw this at a firehouse.  A few pieces of pipe. One end capped, one end with a garden hose quick disconnect and a bunch of holes drilled in it.

This is a great idea. It would be great for fire and other emergency vehicles.
