One must wonder if the Union was for or against consolidation in these cases? Hard to imagine taxpayers supporting their own FD if the FD thinks the new one would be better. Seems more likely the Union was key in retaining their own FD. Hermosa may be a true "win-win"?

Nope. In both El Segundo and Monterey Park the local and the Chief supported consolidation. In El Segundo anti-consolidation groups cited minimal savings and loss of local control. In Monterey Park, anti-consolidation people accused the union of supporting the measure so they could "have upward mobility in a larger department" despite $2m in savings.

Sounds like it benefits the firefighters more then the public.

Hermosa Beach is a seaside town of 19,000 with a fire department that consists of one fire engine and an ambulance. If you can't see how regional services delivery could help a community like that I don't know who could. The whole south bay consists of two engine and one truck departments like Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo, and El Segundo which could regionalize like say, North Hudson NJ or the Verdugo cities in the LA basin. Besides those, there's Torrance, a mid size department and then the inland cities like Inglewood, Hawthorne and Carson as well as the Palos Verde area which are all LACoFD.

  3. Ah yes the Kentland 33 yahoo's. Not surprised this happened to them. Only a matter of time. They are a bit too unprofessional for anyone's tastes. I have met firemen from around the country and world, both career and volunteer, and no one can hold a candle to how these guys run. We are all Type A personalities and cocky but look at how these guys present themselves. "We are better then you" "Busiest company in the country" That's all nice and cute but every time the run totals come out they seem to not be the top guys. hmmm.

    There is this story

Yeah, "BMA", I agree, keyboard commando.

  4. You are really good at using Google images, I will give you that. I'm aware that fire department buses and transport trucks exist. I am also acutely aware that space ships exist. Yes, it is still dumb. We're not talking USAR or wildland. It's not a crew of part time college kids with backpacks and rakes. You have a fire station with firemen and fire trucks and now you want everyone to buy a bus to take instead of the fire truck. You are advocating buying 8-24 duplicate SCBAs, hand tools, saws, flashlights etc. To put on a transport bus. To take to a routine fire. Yes. This is still very dumb. Also if all the firemen take the bus, who is going to be there for the fire engine anyway? I'm starting to see the writing on the wall of why to stop reading this site. I'm arguing with someone on the internet if firemen should take a bus or a fire engine. Time to find a new hobby.

  5. And that elbow on the front bumper is a giant waste. Adds $40,000 - &60,000 to the cost (plus additional maintenance costs), the friction loss to get from the front bumper to the pump is equal to 112+ feet of hose (to travel 15 feet) and it reduces the flow by up to 30%. In other words why buy a 1,500gpm pump when you plan to cap its supply at 1,000gpm?

This is a misleading statement that really annoys me because people who don't understand it ( i know you do) regurgitate it. No, if you are supplying your 3000gpm rearmount aerial with two monitors, you should not use the front intake. But at many of our bread and butter fires we're flowing one or two 1.75"s at 185 each and maybe a 2.5" at 325gpm. In other words, that 1000gpm cap will be fine. The front intake has a soft suction preconnected, it's fast and good for tight streets.

  6. Nope, just a tool. That's what it is. We clean our rig the same way we clean a haligan.....because they're both tools. The can man has his can, the OV has his haligan and hook and a chauffeur has his apparatus.

I call myself a fireman, because that's what I am. Firemen are what they are because of the job they do.....not the vehicle they ride in, that's just silly.

It's not a symbol of anything bigger......the members inside, they matter. A truck is a truck.

The rig isn't symbolic of anything bigger than just a machine. No pride in the machines. Got it.
